I will wait some months or a year, for an opportunity to pick it up second hand for low price. seems to be the right stuff for one of the nights when you are already drunk anyway. :)

Every map, every cut scene, every character, every weapon, and every effect looks incredible. I have witnessed no tears or wash outs and a couple of times I’ve seen landscape that looks like a beautiful life-like painting. Even the bomb effects would have to be considered "beautifully" done.
Both the single player, multiplayer missions and the maps are done in incredible detail. Every brink, every serial number on a burning tank make for incredible visuals. This is probably the best looking game I’ve seen.
(...)
The sounds are equally incredible and outstanding. Voice acting is really decent compared to some offerings in computer games. You really do feel like you’re in a movie. Background sounds are pure and clean, explosions and gunfire are always mixed-in well. ...
Both the video and audio are absolutely incredible in this game.
(...)
I usually praise the multiplayer and find fault with the single player in my game reviews, but CoD4 is just the opposite.
The single player campaign grabs you by the balls from the word go and does not let go until after the credits, and I mean really, after the credits.
(...)
it’s not just about running and gunning down the bad guys. I have done more in this game than I could have ever imagined. I stormed a ship, I chased a felon, I sneaked into an enemy compound, I laid in position for over a day to make the "one shot, one kill". I ran for my life… a lot! I repelled down a burning building. I fireman-carried my partner for ten miles. I fired a stinger, a javelin, a mini-gun, and tons of other weapons. I called in air support, choppers and airplanes in this 10 to 12 hour single player game. Other players claim it takes them 6 to 8 hours to complete the campaign.
And then, after all of that I cried. Okay, maybe not cried, but my eyes did get watery. Then I got up from my computer and said “That was one of the most incredible games I’ve played.”
If Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a book, it would be a best seller.
If Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a movie, it would be a blockbuster.
It is my opinion that everyone who calls themselves a computer gamer should make the effort to play this campaign. You'll be a star in this interactive movie. You will not be disappointed.
(...)
The game is on rails, meaning you follow a scripted storyline. Like I said you’re an actor, someone has already written the story and you just follow it. It is an easy game. A little too easy, though I did get stuck a couple of times. Usually when it was me against the hordes. But then if you jack-it-up to a higher level, it is insanely difficult. There is not a middle or normal setting in my opinion.
Then you and only you push the story forward. You can send enough rounds downrange to destroy a village, but until you move up and reach a certain spot the bad guys will keep popping up in the window. So you can’t really tactically engage the enemy or flank them. To end the rush of enemies you have to move up to the frontline, danger close, and kill them at point blank range.
(...)
Well as you can tell if you read my review, this has potential for PC "Game of the Year" written all over it.
Graphics and sounds are incredible. Game play and execution is well done. The single player campaign is a must play. Multiplayer is very well done (if they will just fix the server finding issues...).
Yes, this is a run and gun game. Know what type of game you’re getting. But also open your mind. sure I can take tons of hits, back away and recover, but it’s a movie, an excellent movie that you are the star of.

Spot on with the SP part! It really does grab you by the balls.

The first U-tube spoiler has already got doubts in relation to AI capability & alertness. What I'm relating this to is the following scene;

You and your SF team enter the ship hallway to find a drunk crew member staggering around :()1: You and your team blaze away full auto, expending about five rounds each, he dies just outside a room to which two other crew members are sleeping

They never wake up but instead die in their beds, by you and your SF team room clearance tactics. All they did was sleep

That room must have been the sick bay and those two corpses must have been admitted due to their hearing loss

Have a look and tell me is that the sign of a worthy AI opponent :hmm:

Just asking so don't get angry :hulk: this is just something noticed :hmm:

The weapons are all silenced, if that makes a difference to you.

As a fellow infantry soldier :yep:, I doubt that three weapons firing approx 15 round in total would be enough to hide your presence, and what of the dying drunk man yelling his last blood curdling scream when hit by 15 rounds or so just outside his mates sleeping chamber ;)

AI is crucial in games these days and this one just doesn't look to have the goods....but I haven't played it yet so I could be proven wrong.....I hope so anyway

@ Ven

Admittedly my version of COD4 is for the PS3 but they are the same.

What you are describing is the prologue mission when you first rope down to the ship. What the spoiler doesn't show you is what happens when you get further into the ship.;)

I will not lie to you, the SP is very short (I finished it on a Regular setting) in about 4hrs, in one sitting. However, find this game as cheaply as you can but do get it. The AI is actually very good and you will be swamped by the enemy if you are not agressive enough. As for realism of the kill, usually, I can drop a target with 2-3 body shots. Also, the 'rag doll' animations are very good when the enemy dies or gets hit with a grenade.

In my mind, COD4 will be in contention for game of the year.

The main replayability of COD4 is in MP. That in itself is awesome and unlike many reports, the server issues are not as bad as made out. 'Touch wood', I have never had any connection issues when trying to join an MP match. The only thing that might be improved upon is the 'matchmaking, at the moment, newplayers are being matched with players ranked 50+ or even on prestige mode.

So far, I have logged around 5 days online MP time, not bad for a supposedly buggy game that only released in the UK on the 10th Nov.;)

And this is why I love Subsim, I gobbed off about the AI in this game (without owning a copy) and thanks to Dowly's link and Danlisa's critical eye I feel confident that I would enjoy this game, particularly the MP side of the game. Thanks guys for your feedback.

My favorite style of PC game is "Stealth" (Thief series, Silent Hunter III, Splinter Cell series and soon to own Assassin's Creed).

There's not much stealth on the SP, expect for a one mission where you and your sniper partner are behind enemy lines slowly making your way towards the target area. Pure COD quality that mission too.

The stealth games have dried up lately, I was hoping they would have made a pure sniper stealth game by now, they always seem to tap dance around it ie; Hitman, Ghost Recon, or if they do have sniper scenarios its usually only one mission.

Well COD 4 has plenty of sniping, but most of it is in the midst of battle or from some high position covering the AI attack.

And I agree with you, I hope there's going to be an purely sniper based game soon! I know of Sniper Elite, but the maps in it were too contained to operate like a sniper. I myself love sniping and that's what I always do in MP games if possible, online sniper since the first Delta Force by Novalogic. Now, only Battlefield 2 is on my HD to satisfy my sniper hunger. :yep:

I'll be your number two (spotter) anytime Dowly, imagine a game which had huge maps, total destruction (like Crysis), unlimited movement routes (storm drains, underwater, repel, rooftop, para, picking your yowie suit, weapon load out, have to navigate by day and night through enemy terrain, AI that will react to hunting you down if and when you get your shot off, sniper on sniper, the list could go on and on,

I'm like you if I play MP I find a position on the map that is a good sniping position with exits to withdraw but easy to defend, good fields of fire, but not easy to pick that a sniper would be hidden there.

Speaking of spotters, check this BF2 vid, that's some great sniper-spotter coop going on!

Actually if you watch someone play the SP right through its like watching a modern day war film with your mate the main actor:yep: I would give the game 5 stars as a movie:)
