Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what effect this patch will have on mod's like Trigger_Maru and ROW?
In other words, how compatible is this?

Thanks and regards,

Like 1.3, we will find out once the modders have a chance to look at the changes, etc.

Yay! It's here:up:

Now we find out how many mods it breaks :-?

Boo! I don't wanna think about it:o . Seriously, I guess it's time to unload all the mods, make a copy of the game folder, install the patch and compare every file from the patched game to every file of the 1.3 vanilla game. Shouldn't take more than 15 minutes or so:arrgh!: Or, if we're really lucky, there might be a list of changed files that we could get our hands on?

1. Radio messages still DO NOT work :damn:
2. No Ship names and individual Tonnage shown for sinkings :damn:
3. Still showed as KILLED when you leave game and your sub as no damage.:damn:

One plus side....Load time is a lot quicker !

Thanks for nothing regarding multi fixes.:damn:

Minoos:I would think patch v1.4 to be cumulative just as the previous ones. Mo need to apply earlier versions after a clean install...

The Readme file confirms it:
quote:
Please make sure that you are installing the right patch for your game version (US, EMEA, etc).
This patch can be applied on any Silent Hunter 4 version (1.0 to 1.3).
This patch will upgrade your version of Silent Hunter 4 to Silent Hunter 4 patch 1.3.

The last sentence should be read as "This patch will upgrade your version of Silent Hunter 4 to Silent Hunter 4 patch 1.4. "

It seems to be the same as before.

Such awful timing for this. So many good new games out. Crysis, Rock Band, Guitar Hero III, Call of Duty 4... poor SH4 is kinda low on my priorities list, but unlike all the others, it does not have a temporary attraction, it's the bedrock of my games list that I can always count on for some leisure time, minimum of hassle. So I know I'll get back to it eventually.

Be aware of the following:
The save games and replays that were made with the original version of Silent Hunter 4 or with Silent Hunter 4 patch 1.1 to 1.3 will be incompatible with the new patch version.
In Base auto-saving are compatible with original version, Patch 1.1, Patch 1.2 and Patch 1.3.
Multiplayer (LAN or Online) connection between the original version of Silent Hunter 4, any of the previous patches and the new patch version is not possible. :arrgh!:

The patch does not work for me. The first time I forgot to unload mods.:damn: Game didn't work. Reinstalled twice, the second time I reinstalled codecs to make sure that is not the problem and it still does not work. No mods enabled, I havn't even installed JSGME. I can get to the game menu, but it's constantly freezing, and there are also graphical anomalies in the back ground such as flashing black lines.

Help would be very much Apprieciated.

Yeah, I will. Nothing there to look at yet though & I'm impatient (lol) I was looking at both 1.4 mod compatibility threads earlier in the day, that one & the one that got locked here. I decided to go fresh all the way so I just completely wiped everything SH4 related & started from scratch, I just hate to be disappointed if the OakGroove gauges won't work, that's my favorite mod but this go around I'm going in deep & putting in NSM & ROW mods too. Still a little left to D/L (at 97% of ROW sound effects) & I'm off to install all I can before it gets too late & test function tomorrow.

When you uninstalled SHIV, did you also remove the "SH4" directory the game places in the My Documents folder? There are config files there too that might be messing with your re-install. Try wiping it all out, reloading and patching to 1.3. If that runs, then apply 1.4 and give it a go. If it still doesn't work, maybe your download of 1.4 is corrupt-try another download.

Good luck!

Also you ( and others ) may just want to "defrag" your Hard Drive before starting a new SH4, 1.4 and then all those mods. Defrag is a good insurance. :yep:

If you're using XP,

My Computer --> Right-click any drive --> Properties --> Tools --> Defragment Now... --> Select drive you want to defrag (in this case the drive where SH4 is installed, most probably C) --> Defragment --> Wait (may take between 10 minutes to beyond, depending on how good your processor is, how fragmented the drive is, how big it is, etc. etc.)

I haven't downloaded the patch yet, just found out about it. But hats of to the developer AND publisher for sticking with this and resolving many of the key issues that were holding this game back from reaching its true (awesome) potential. 1.4 plus mods will be spectacular.

Now I have to change my "Viva 1.3" tagline.

Hmm, my first install of SH4, I'm a little nervous, this is a whole new thing for me, I guess I will have to start at the accademy, wonder if if it's anything like SH3?
Sure hope this patch is good, rant, rave, etc.:yep:

I haven't had time to play with SH4 for several months as I have been out at sea in real life, working on my USCG Masters License and my sailing instructor's credentials, successfully, I might add.

It has been rather fun playing with all of my real world chart tools and plotting DR, running fixes, set and drift, etc. All of that practice can only help my torpedo targeting in the SH4 world.

Note to the DEV Team....add tides and tidal currents and ocean currents in patch 1.5 as a difficulty level setting in order to affect torpedo tracks in and around straits and harbors....

Now that 1.4 is released, I am looking forward to some stormy weather so I can spend some time on the computer. The WX here in Florida has been really excellent with very few days on which I have been unable to get out on the water.

Even the cold fronts that have moved through have been rather mild and not too breezy to sail. That usually changes in December when we actually get some cold weather and I will have to put on a sweater ;)

Oh, and I have found an excellent way to simulate life aboard a diesel boat! It requires one to have their own boat with a diesel engine. I set up my laptop at the nav station, which is right over the diesel fuel tank, great for residual diesel odor.
Then I start SH4 and when I am on the surface in the game, I run the diesel engine on board my boat and do a battery charge. Clonking my head on the overhead while going through passageways on the boat also adds to the effect. Maybe I should install a periscope on the sailboat, what do you think? I could use it to get relative bearings and plot attack profiles on my manuevering board.

Oh great, now I've got another project for the boat, Add Periscope and Radar....

Downloading now.......

I can still find plenty copys at my local stores - their boxes are dust covered. When this train wreck first appeared I visited all the sites about SH4 and quit counting the gripes about it when the count got over 50. So I figured I'd wait until modders had a chance to do something with it and until SH4 1.4 came out - which I must admit I thought WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. But it has!

I would suggest that you turn off any and all sypware and antivirus and firewalls and then REDOWNLOAD the game again. You probably got a bad copy of the patch.

Then completley delete the old game and check the registry for copies of the files too. Sometimes programmers don't make the auto game delete program remove all the files they put on your computer. So it doesn't hurt to check the registery.

Now reinstall the game from the original CD and then install the newly downloaded 1.4 patch.

If that doesn't work or help then I don't know what else to tell you.

Might make a back up copy of the mods before you do all the above.

It's a good idea to reboot your computer after unintalling a program and before installing something new. Rebooting is good insurance that the temp files are removed. If not you may have to go into the hard drive and find all the *.tmp files and remove them manually.

Defrag is a windows XP feature. It's in the start /all programs/ accessories/system tools/ system defragmenter .

Download just finished. And it turns out. the one I had wasn't corrupted :damn:
I just uninstalled SH4, but I'm going to hold off reinstalling and patching until tomorrow. Hopefully it works or I'll have to revert back to 1.3.

But 1.3 is better than nothing...

I'm also planning to get SH3. I was actaully getting it a couple weeks aga, I went to future shop, they said they had 2 left. Searched the shelves and couldn't find it

Thats the convetional wisdom and a good way of trouble shooting. If the game suddenly starts crashing you wont know if the mods or the patch is causing it.

Personally I installed over only the green button mod and had no problems. Ill start adding more after a few days as I wait for horror storys to pour in.

This patch is pretty cool really. I know it has its short comings in some areas, but then again who seriously was expecting it to be perfect? Nothing in life is perfect so why would SH4 be any different?

Although I'm not a fan of things like strategic options, I'm looking forward to the expansion, if not just to see what further enhancements it will make.

I just hope it doesn't alter too much, so after we've got everything sorted for 1.4 compatible mods we have to start all over again a couple of months down the line :damn:

Well, I screwed the pooch for sure. I tried to do what everyone recommended. I Uninstalled SH4, then re-installed (from DVD), installed the patch, copied over the MOD folder(s). Somehow it got all messed up. Now I seem to have a halfway installed SH4. It doesn't work. Locks up to a black screen immediately after the intro movie plays. I tried to use Control Panel to Uninstall SH4 again, but it tells me I have to uninstall the 1.4 version first....which I can't do. I then try to re-install from the orig DVD again, the DVD opens up with the "Install" option greyed out and if I select "Uninstall" I get the same message about 1.4 version being in place and having to be removed before SH4 can be installed.

I've got nothing now, as far as SH4 goes. It's Prob a weird Registry problem but I am no way capable of going in and messing with the registry. Any ideas?

If that's the case, the item with the 0x31020001 ID is missing (which is for the new icons displayed in navigation map for ports (and as part of the "strategic game" in the add-on)).

So you need to get your hands on the clean version from 1.4 patch.

:ping: The conclusion is that all 1.3 interface mods that change the menu_1024_768.ini are NOT compliant with the 1.4 patch and will cause the navigation map to crash.

Hey guys, new member, big history buff but not very computer oriented. I uninstalled all patches and SH4. Reinstalled SH4 from the cd and went to ubisoft to download the patch. Last night I was stalking a Kongo class BB and had a DD brush the conning tower(need to pay more attention to sonar). The DD put out lifeboats and I incurred no damage.
My Questions to the informed masses.
1. Wasn't the patch supposed to fix this.
2. Did I get a bad patch from Ubisoft?
3. How do I get rid of tunnel vision when going after a fleet unit????

Anyway any help would be appreciated. I have been following the site and threads for awhile and you guys are a hoot. Good hunting.

First off, welcome aboard! And on to business:

1. The patch was supposed to address this, but I have not yet been run over in 1.4, so I cannot speak to this. I'll have to test tonight. Is it possible the DD blew himself up with DCs?
2. I doubt it. If the game is running fine the patch file was probably good.
3. You have to make periodic periscope sweeps and check the map for contact lines to help keep track of the escorts.

Good luck and good hunting!

Very happy to read this post. It makes me think I am finally heading in the right direction. I am willing to try your approach... and gald to see also that you have Vista32, as do I. Am I correct in assuming the free registry cleaner is risk-free, so to speak? I get sweaty palms and nervous twitches at even the though of personally/manually screwing around with the registry.

Also, when you say manually delete SH4 files, you mean just delete them, send them to the recycle bin and then away permanently, right? It's been my understanding never to do that to remove a program/application because you can leave troublesome remnants of stuff on the PC, specifically in the registry I suppose.

I guess I am looking for a reassuring, "Go Ahead, son...not to worry" encouragement.

For what it is worth, here's my story that I was about to post in one or more threads on the Forums, looking for help. Does it seem to describe your situation/experience as well...especially regarding the installation/uninstall/reinstallation problem?:

"I have a long excruciatingly detailed explanation of the mistakes I made, and involving several install/reinstall/patching cycles, but at this point maybe just the short version and the current situation will suffice:
Somehow, my SH4 and 'SH4 patched to 1.4' got all messed up. Initially I installed 1.4 without first disenabling the Mods. I learned from the forums that was wrong, so I started trying to do it right..without ever checking to see if 1.4 was actually working. I also simultaneously tried to change the install from C drive to D drive, then back to C drive where it is now. Two days later, the symptoms now are that when I start SH4 it does say it is v1.4 on the screen, it shows the intro logo and movie...it also gives me the main menu. I can set Options...and they do appear in the cfg files in the "Documents/SH4" folder. But, when I select a mission (a training one for simplicity)I see the loading screen working, but it then immediately locks up and goes black and I get a "SH4 has stopped" notice.

In a nutshell, it is a total mess...but it's gotten worse: When I now try to Uninstall SH4 thru Windows Control Panel, I get a screen which says "...cannot run setup.exe"
When I try to Uninstall or Re-install SH4 using the original DVD, I get a message saying that I need to Uninstall version 1.4 first before the DVD will install SH4 version 1.0. The DVD doesn't even offer me an option to "Uninstall" SH4 (whatever the version) It's a Catch22, to say the least.
Along the way I did a System Restore, but that didn't help.

I'm pretty sure that I may now have a badly corrupted Registry for Silent Hunter, which might explain the problem with Control Panel and Orig DVD failing to Uninstall SH4. I don't really want to go into the registry because it is so dangerous, but would do it if I only have to delete certain specifically identified silent hunter entries. In layman's terms, I basically think I need to somehow erase all evidence of SH4 on my PC, however that can be done, then start from scratch with the original DVD.

Any expert ideas/help will be greatly appreciated....

Thanks to the Devs for the 1.4 patch. Its been a long time comming, and from what I've heard here, worth the wait.

I've downloaded the patch, but I'm going to wait for awhile before I patch the sim, though, for two reasons:

1. I'm going to finish out the war for once. Its Oct. '44, so I will only do two or three more patrols to really sail through the war.

2. Two or three weeks to finish out the war will give the modders a chance to adjust their mods for compatability. I'm sure I'll miss Trigger Maru if I have to do without it. Thanx Ducimus. I also want to be sure that Tater's Campaign Layers will still work. Kudos for you, too. And to all the others that have done such wonderful work on this sim, Thanx!

Now, if only someone would get the spelling of Bourganville right, I'll be just happy, happy, joy, joy!

I"ll keep a weather eye on these forums for any helpful hints.

about the ramming DD,s i run the convoy mission in the sub school
and let the dds ram me
it damaged all my sistems
and the dd took no damage atleast gave no indications of taking damage
they usually used to damage themselves when they did that in 1.3
so something out there has been fixed

be sure you removed all files
sometimes when you uninstall you still have some left over files from addons
(atleast ive noticed that)
maybe making sure you delete those will give you a real clean install

Damage taken by hulls submarine is shown in the damage interface?
what is that supposed to do i havent noticed anything different
can somone point me to it

Well it's nice to see that fairing gone from the Gato class subs, now I can see to defend myself finally without the walls blocking my sight.

I've got a saved game and have 8 torpedo's left and the Yamato in my sights very close .. seven times I've hit it with 8 torpedo's and nothing happens, not even one propeller stops turning nor does it even begin to get lower in the water. Did they break something here, I mean 8 torpedo's should do more than this? I've sank the thing several times with 7, even one time with 6 .. I've tried every depth setting between 12 feet to 19 feet deep .. any clues?

I also notice that no matter what I do if I aim just in front of the Yamato my torpedo's hit from the center to the stern .. I've set them on slow speed, high speed .. still when I aim for the bow they hit way back ... I've noticed this running into the passenger liners as well .. anyone else???

The torpedo's trajectory can differ with a few meters from the trajectory computed by the TDC if the range is short and the bearing is a big number (>45). So, if you want a very accurate hit, position your self in such a way that the bearing is less than 20 degrees.

This couldn't come at a better time for me. I've hit a bug in the campaign where the game pulls a CTD right at the same moment in time. No way around it.

I need to ask if we have to do a complete reinstall of the game and then patch it or can simple disengage all my mods with the mod-enabler, patch the game, and then start testing the mods one by one again?

Fincuan

Disable all mods and run the "Compare game files to snapshot" in JSGME(you of course generated the snapshot after installing JSGME, right?). If it lists nothing but screenshots you're free to patch to 1.4. If any actual game files are listed, then I'm afraid reinstalling is the only secure option.

From official notes on the 1.4 patch:

Note 1: The save games and replays that were made with older versions of Silent Hunter 4 will be incompatible with the new patch version.

Note 2: In Base autosaving are compatible between original version and Patch

Start the game from your last Base autosave. Hopefully, you won't have already borked the patch by starting from a different saved game.

Actually this is in a fresh new campaign with ver 1.4 .. I just saved before shooting and man I can't sink that thing no matter what I do .. I only had the 8 torpedo's left .. I got 6 good bow shots and hits on her, and 2 aft shots off and hits, and the Yamato never even slowed down a bit .. This has become a challenge.. I keep playing that save over and over, but nothing I do can stop her. I've since continued on with the original campaign, I've already completed that patrol even, but I still replay that save now trying to figure out how to sink her.

I find it odd that people say they've never run into the Yamato, I see her fairly often I feel .. not every patrol but it's not as uncommon as some make it out to be, actually I ran into another task force with 2 Yamato's and 2 carriers on the way home from that one patrol above I was talking about where I couldn't sink her, but was I out of torpedos .. my bad luck!

Hello please advise me here
I used to run SH4 v1.3 without any problems. A couple of weeks ago I suffered a catastrophic crash unrelated to the game and had to carry out a factory reinstall on my 3 year old HP Pavilion 1723. Since then I have been reinstalling everything, incuding up to date drivers as you would expect.

I reinstalled SH4 followed by the latest patch 1.4. I first scented trouble when the intro appeared in psychodelic colours very different from the way it used to appear. Apart from this, the little potted history of the campaign to date - you know the one with the voice over and the charts, shuddered horribly.
The game otherwise loaded easily. However as soon as I approached action (ie one of my expertly aimed torpedoes about to blow the stern off a jap destroyer. Or an imminent bombing attack by a zero) the game crashed. Not an ordinary ctd but the 'blue screen of death' - a system memory dump.

I removed everything and reinstalled the game without patches - same result. The problem seems to be with my computer but can anyone tell me what is wrong...
I was always happy playing this game and I feel bereft...

Please experts, give me the benefit of your advice

When you uninstall SH4 via Add/Remove Programs it is actually running this command:

C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628}\setup.exe -runfromtemp -l0x0009 -removeonly

On my machine the directory C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628} has setup.exe, a setup.ini file that has the string "Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific" in it, and several other files. It also has a 1.04.000 subdirectory that has many of the same files.

The Uninstall option from the control panel may no longer point to where these files are on your machine. See if you can find them, then run setup.exe -runfromtemp -l0x00009 -removeonly from that directory.

Might be a good idea to hang fire on some of the mods. They might be working ok in the sense that the game runs and doesn't CTD or freeze or do anything unusual, but they may be cancelling out things like the extended horizon in 1.4 etc. Plus using mods not catered for 1.4 might have unforeseen side effects that you could run into later on and may be a royal pain in the backside.

I'll second that one :up::up:

@Doolittle81

When you uninstall SH4 via Add/Remove Programs it is actually running this command:
.....
On my machine the directory C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628} has setup.exe, a setup.ini file
...
The Uninstall option from the control panel may no longer point to where these files are on your machine.

I've found the hidden folder/file "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628}", in which there is a "setup.exe". It does not show the additional " -runfromtemp -l0x0009 -removeonly" extension/comment.

Running that "setup.exe" from this directory gives me the same Windows error message that "Setup.exe has stopped working" which I get when I try to Uninstall thru Control Panel.

Any advice on my next step...anyone?

Additional relevant information:
From other advice I've received over the last two days, I've also previously found the {0D005F9...etc...} folder at two locations in my Registry. One location is in the uninstall folder in the SOFTWARE\Microsoft\...Uninstall folder.

Any advice on registry changing? (Other than to make a backup copy beforehand, of course)

Moderators: I'd like to let this post sit here for a day or so to see if anyone has any additional advice before I take any Registry change action. After that time, I will delete this post so as to unclutter this thread (sorry for somewhat temporarily imposing upon the thread)....

Finally you have upped your post count by one ?

We need a little more than one word to go on here.

From other advice I've received over the last two days, I've also previously found the {0D005F9...etc...} folder at two locations in my Registry. One location is in the uninstall folder in the SOFTWARE\Microsoft\...Uninstall folder.

Two things to try:

1) The -runfromtemp, etc., are not part of the filename but are command line options passed to setup.exe. To run it with these options:
a) Open an elevated command prompt (find cmd.exe in c:\windows\system32, right click it and select "Run as Administrator").
b) type cd "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628}" and hit enter.
c) type setup.exe -runfromtemp -l0x0009 -removeonly and hit enter.

The above probably won't make it work, but its worth a shot first.

2) Use MsiZap.exe to remove the record of this installation in the registry. This doesn't remove the SH4 files on your machine or registry entries used by the game, but it does safely remove the record in the registry that let's Windows Installer itself know that SH4 was installed. I've never used InstallShield, but I'm assuming it uses Windows Installer under the hood.
a) Info on MsiZap.exe is available at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa370523.aspx
b) To get it, download and install the free Windows SDK at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C2B1E300-F358-4523-B479-F53D234CDCCF&displaylang=en
c) To run it, open an elevated command prompt as above, cd to the directory msizap.exe is in, and run msizap.exe T {0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628}.
d) Delete the folder C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{0D005F09-A5F4-473B-A901-5735C6AF5628}

After running MsiZap, the computer won't know you had SH4 installed, even though a bunch of its files will still be around. Go ahead and delete whatever SH4 files are on your machine. I would leave the registry alone at this point since a new installation should write any needed entries. Go ahead and attempt to install SH4 now off the DVD, it should work.

I was referring to how long it takes for them to do anything in relation to this game and as an employee of another gaming company, I find it amazing that for patch 1.3 for instance it took community pressure to even bring that about.
