Hi All ermm i just have a few questions;

1. Is it possible to ring the bell by the conning tower on the porpuise or turn on the
search-light ? The search light would be really cool...

2. I chose the starting ship the porpuise for my first campaign. Im just wondering why there is a choice of ship ? If you choose a different ship to start with does it
also change the timeframe and difficulity ?

3. And what determines when you get a new ship..

thanks much;
Baron..

...no, the bell can't be rung and there's no way to turn the lights on! I absolutely agree with you on the searchlight thing! It would be not only a nice add-on, but useful on those dark, moonless nights!

Having said that, I've been surprised before when someone revealed a capability I wasn't aware existed. For example, I didn't know one could tune the passive sonar head by utilizing the "HOME" and "END" keys! It sure as heck wasn't in the manual! But it WAS here, so, don't be surprised if you get a response along the lines of "of course you can!"

3. And what determines when you get a new ship..

I'll take a stab at this one. Usually for me if I have successful patrols I am usually offered a new boat after about 4-5 patrols.

wow that was fast...
thanks for the info, i did see that post about the sonar but i thought the home and end keys were the radar :hehe:

the radar wasnt working on my first mission i found out when i got back that i had
to buy it (basic model) with my hardearned renoun, no free lunch here :lol:

i had a good patrol so i splurged on the gun upgrades also then realized i could fill more bodies on the boat also, some costing renoun and some freebies... i took mostly all the polywogs as some we not bad at all. i didnt see anything about this
in the book but have learned just about everything here. This site is the best..

- off to post my first piccies in the ROW thread, thanks again im sure i will have many more questions like how to take a week off to do some more missions :arrgh!:

cheers Baron...

I went from the USS Saury (Sargo class) to the USS Drum (Gata class) after 4 patrols. Then from the Drum to the USS Balao after only two patrols (picked up the Balao in California too, so got to sail under the Golden Gate, albeit at 23:00hrs, so dark as pitch).

cool beans; this sim is the best i have ever played...getting ready for mission 2 :)
so they offer it up as a promotion i take it, does your crew come along also or is
it back to training new tadpoles up ?

that is a fine ship your father served on, my grandfather served on a DE in WW2
so now im deffinately going to have to find out all that info and honor and remember his service also, i want to get some pics for my walls now from his ship...
funny how a game can stir up so much emotion.

A base typically was home to several classes, so you get to pick. You don't have to take an S-class in Manila, that's just the first item in the list that is displayed; in fact, there were only six of them there at the start, there were more of other classes. So it's OK to take a Porpoise or some other class there (is it Sargo?), they're all legit.

And yes, it does change the difficulty: if you pick the Asiatic career, and you pick the S-class sub, it's harder. Not because the game AI or timeframe are changed, but because the S-class is a limited old tub. But it has a killer dive time! It goes down like a rock, even on its own.

Man, I haven't heard that one in a while. How 80s! :D

(Oh, and don't forget to pick up the new 1.4 patch!)

Oh, man -- that tidbit alone is great! I had no idea, and using the mouse is a pain in the behind. I never would've discovered that on my own. Thanks! :yep:

ahh this just sank into my brain also, its for tuning the sonar arrrrr like turning the
hydrophones in a 360 hehe will have to keep that in mind, i would hope the sonar officer is doing that manually on his own while he is working the controls, or i should be a kp duty also whilst driving the boat...

Ok one more question, i did buy the AA radar in port but it shows as "unpacking" in the ship management screen ? Who does the unpacking ?? It doesnt seem to be working yet, do i need to leave the damage control team on for a while to get the "unpacking" done ?

ug - i may need to get a wench on me boat fer all this unpacking stuff. Arrrrrr

I found my answer to the radar question here http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=125804
and a good link to radar info in there, apperently both scopes in the sub are for contact radar and not air-radar..

OK, here's a real n00b question for ya: How do you delete saved games? I can't find a "delete" option on the load saved game screen...
Thanks!

It's a design decision. The delete button only shows up in the Save screen, not the Load screen.

The easiest way is to load a savegame in base (where you can access both Save and Load options) and delete those saves.

Baron..

1) The Sonar Officer does indeed do his job while you are off looking after other things.

2) It's not "unpacking" but rather refers to an upgrade pack. It means that your SD radar has been upgraded. You are good to go.

Thanks John Channing;

I figured it out when i learned how the Air Radar works... Cause i couldnt figure out
how to turn it on, but i see it is just active when you surface ermm i think..

I did figure out something that was bothering me in case any new people are following this thread... (like me) lol
Holding down the SHIFT key will greatly speed up your camera view's (this was a real boon from the camera going pixels at a time...)

The Shift (and Control) keys do their job for all 3D cameras (interior, sonar, radar, exterior, deck (gun), aa guns, binocular, periscopes, career base office).

Thank you, kind sir. I tried this last night and it worked a treat.

that is good news...just started the game and am prowling around here for advice before I screw up too many things and have to start another career

I know that is fun, but time is rather a limiting factor for me
