After completing his career with the Kriegsmarine during WW2... Bernard aparantly began a career with an oil shipping company, as an officer on the very tankers he once stalked in the atlantic.

Bernard's cousin Bruno got Bernard the job... but after one of bernard's embarrasing accidents... Bruno attempts to explain to the press what happened upon Bernards ship

Hmm. That's odd. I could swear reading somewhere that he immigrated to America and got a job as First Watch Officer on some small Hawaiian tourist vessel called the Minnow. :hmm:

I can assure you that after the war, Bernard changed his name to Bernardski, and then became the chief of the boat on my Akula in Dangerous Waters. I know this because whenever I order us up to 22 metres, he never fails to broach the surface and poke the sail out of the water up to about 12 metres, giving our position away. He's also perfected the art of ramming me into the bottom even when I order us 10 metres clear of the ocean floor.

Bernard gingerly takes us up to periscope depth:

Other specialities include reversing us and severing the trailing floating antenna, reversing us and severing the towed array, and firing countermeasures into the sky when we are running shallow.

As an encore he can fail to lower the scope and flood it when we dive, and shut down torpedoes when you ask him to pre-enable them.

Don't believe me? You can see him in his Russian guise in this movie:
