Just alt tabbed out of a patrol. Had to post this!

GWX 1.03. Date,10th December 1939. Time, dusk about 17:00

Convoy of 4, Yes 4! passenger liners. 3 normal and 1 Cunard monster.

Where?

In the narrow passage between the North of Ireland and Scotland.
Just West of the Island of Islay.

Heading SE probably to Liverpool.

The bad news at least 6 escorts I've seen so far and less than 80meters under the keel.

Sorry no screenies but I have the external camera disabled.

Yes this is patrol 7 of Kaleun Kurt Linke who's last patrol you can read here.

U64 must be the luckiest boat in the Flottilla.

Must go... "things to do, people to drown, ships to sink!"

Well Kaleun Kurt Linke ********d that up good and proper.
The U64 resides at the bottom of the Irish Sea.

Before he died he took these pictures if anyone else wants to find and try and take on these 4 Liners. I'm guessing they're scripted.

Use the protractor tool to draw two lines from the corners of grid AM61 as shown. Where they cross is the location of the 4 Liner Convoy at 17:14hrs.

Thankfully we live in an infinite universe with infinite realities.
Somewhere out there Kurt Linke is having another go.
Maybe this time he will pull it off.

I know it doesn't seem like enough time does it?
I have never racked up so many patrols in other careers so quickly.

Bdu keep assigning U64 grids close to home, so who am I to argue?
And I have my SH3 Commander time in port set to realistic.

Saying that I hadn't scratched the boat until this patrol.
Maybe thats helped.

That was my initial thinking as well http://imgcash1.imageshack.us/img265/4009/shockedyi3.gif

i have found some liners in the med with my IX-b boat in my last patrol.the last encounter was a black swan scorting two liners, so i fired a electric fish against the corvette and then sunk the two liners with torpedoes and deck gun fire.

Most annoying moment for me...three BB's with a perfect position ahead of them...no fish in the tubes! I had just finished hitting a illustrious carrier which sunk...but spent the next few hours dodging DC's! ARRGH

2 alternate realities later Kurt Linke and the crew of U64 pulled it off.

4 Passenger Liners and some of their would be escorts are now rusting on the seabed.

U64 returned to port battered and beaten.
Tea & medals all round!

Bdu have ordered U64 back to Grid AM52 for her next patrol.
Are they never satisfied?

So you have special tactics? Normally i withstand to attack destroyers, cause i concentrate on the convoy itself...

The special tactic I always try to employ is...............SURVIVAL!! http://imgcash1.imageshack.us/img265/4009/shockedyi3.gif

Yes usually I would concerntrate on the convoy and just evade the DD's. However this time things were a bit different. First far shallower water than I prefer to attack in, making evasion very difficult. Secondly the convoy of Liners was constantly getting closer to the UK mainland. I was very worried about aircraft and other re-enforcements. Also they were ploughing along at 15 to 16knts so re-establishing contact was going to be next to impossible.

I managed to position my boat right infront of the convoy and let the first DD pass. Then fired 1 fwd tube at the DD and the 2 stern ones at the first Liner. The DD went down instantly and the Liner was badly crippled. As it slowed it caused the other 3 Liners to concertina together almost like a traffic jam. Then when the other DD's rushed in I used the "Jam" as cover and stayed at periscope depth. By dodging around (and one time under) the Liners I managed to take point blank (under 400 meter) shots at the other 3 DD's with my remaining fwd tubes. I originally thought there were 6 DD's but in the end I only saw 4. Though the game only credited me with 3 of their sinkings.

Once the escorts were out of the picture I surfaced and finished the job on the surface. Surface attack was the only way I could keep up once the "Jam" sorted itself out. Thankfully to large Cunnard Liner only took 1 torp to sink. The standard ones needed 2 each.

I was right to worry about re-enforcements as well. Just after I had fired my final torp another DD appeared from the SE and started firing from long range. I Think he help my cause with the last Liner, as most of his inital barrage hit it instead of U64.
Then I ran away on the surface at first, NE using the Liner as a shield and then dived. Only to 60 meters though as the battle had taken the boat to even shallower waters. Once under crept away in silent running. Kept wiggling as I went, for 2 reasons. 1 to make contact for the DD more difficult and 2 to ensure my hydro guy could hear the Liner when it eventually sank. Wouldn't have wanted to have not got the credit for it.

I would like to say I did this first time, but I died twice before I got it right.

Remember, I also found this convoy in 1939.
The escorts really are no-where near as good as later in the war.

Did you sink the first destroyer with a magnetic piston or simply impact after he passed you? You were probably not able to hit his broadside but only his stern, right?

The 1st and all subsequent Destroyers (CD Class) were sunk with T1 torpedos set to 4 meter depths. Pistol was set to the combination of impact and magnetic. The shot at the 1st Destroyer was taken from his starboard rear quarter. I think the torpedo hit right under his depthchrge racks.
