Folks,

Just installed TM-1.6.5 along with the recommended ROW mods. Looks gorgeous, but, my frame rates really took a hit and the game is now choppy. I run at 1024x768 100hz refresh, high quality, with 4x AA and 4x AF. The pc is an Athlon XP-M 2400+ running at 200mHz x 12 overclocked (which works out to around a 3200 perf rating). Video card is a GeForce 7600GS AGP with 256 meg of ddr2. System memory is 1 GB of Corsair XMS. Turning AF off didn't help much. I suspect its ROW which is causing the hit, but, is there anything I can do other than uninstalling the mod to bump my frame rates ?

Thanks

I'm surprised you didn't have framerate problems with the base game with that hardware and those settings.

I doubt you'll be able to do anything software-wise that'll make much difference. Besides an older video card, only 1gig of memory will start to be an issue with those mods.

Card should be fine as long as you avoid the hi-res sea foam. You might upgrade the CPU a bit. I suspect my Athlon 64 3700+ is a bit slow. But your main problem is 1 gb of memory. Double that and you'll see vast improvement. And get rid of hi-res sea foam if you're using it. You can back off the refresh rate on the card to 70hz and never see the difference too.

I'm using the "classic" sea foam.
Will TM-1.6.5 work without any or all of the ROW mods ?

As for upgrading - I have 2 PC's. The one I mentioned is my older machine. I play the game on both PC's. I simply don't have the riches many do to keep both PC's upgraded. In fact, the 7600GS is a new upgrade (2 weeks ago) from my FX5500 EQ !

Yes, all the ROW stuff is optional.

4 x AA will cripple your frame rate. Try going slightly higher resolution with 2 x AA.

I've got a 512MB nvidia card and 2GB Ram and 4 x AA is too big a hit for my system. So I run 1600x1000 with 2 x AA and it looks sharp enough.

Just in case you haven't already done this...

Load Notepad
Open the file C:\program Files\ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\data\cfg\Main.cfg

Go right to the bottom of this file

You'll see:

[DEVELOPING]
DevDebugEnable=Yes
DevEditEnable=Yes
MiniDump=Yes

Change Yes to No and save your changes. It will help a little, but you still have hardware challenges.

First, thanks for all the replies.

After installing ROW and TM-1.6.5, my frame rates were 8 fps - on the bridge, leaving port.

After checking V-Sync and setting AA to 2x, it jumped to 16 fps.

Then made the "No" settings in the [Developing] Section of Main.cfg - also enabled Dynamic Shadows. Running 16-17 fps - on the bridge, leaving port.

I'm satisfied with that. We'll see what happens in combat.

The v-sync was interesting as disabling it in IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 jumped my frame rates to 43 fps with AA 4x and AF 4x.
