View Full Version : Crysis - an assault gone wrong!

Crysis may have some controversy surrounding it, but at its core, it is a great game! Someone let me know how well I coraled the enemy on this one when all hell broke loose! And yes, I didn't expect what happened in the beginning, but at least I controlled what happened in the end!

As I said in my description, the best laid plans fail as soon as the shooting starts!
-S
PS. If anyone is having trouble with this game - the reason is, you are not being aggressive enough. This is played on Delta.
PPS. Maybe someone can count how many times I came close to death! I still mamanged to keep control of the situation though after about the first 2 min.
PPPS. This is mostly Very High settings by the way. The rest are High.
I still think the only thing that is really great about Crysis are the graphics.
Good use of the superman-suit though, SUBMAN1.
Btw: Did you record that with fraps or cam?

Btw: Did you record that with fraps or cam?Try Tivo - a hacked Tivo. I have an ethernet cable plugged into the Main board. The OS on the Tivo is simply Linux. I run a server to pull off the video. I have also hacked for full DVD quality capture, and upped the MBit/sec capture quality from about 5.5 mbps to 8 mbps. It makes for full frame rate capture - FRAPS can't do this.
I have the full 29.97 FPS version if you want it. I think Veoh is only 15 FPS, so it doesn't look great.
-S
PS. I think Crysis is a great game. The AI is superb. The hanging story at the end is not OK though.

If you ever played "Joint Operations", they are both very close in playout.
Of course, the graphics in Crysis are much better as they should be for a
game 3 years newer. BUT JO had some things going for it that I really liked.
Especially the co-op multiplayer which I think Crysis has the Editor to make
it happen. I want to see that very type of play in MP with friends vs. the
AI bots. The MP of the stock game is OK but not up to par. It lags behind
in most everything vs. the singleplayer except for the aliens. They could have
been left out as far as I am concerned. I have fooled with the editor some and
it is awesum. There is nothing it can't do that the devs did, just takes time....

Ahhh...the bit where you have to get into the school and rescue the hostage...I did it without killing anyone...just stealthed in :P. The only shot fired until the tanks arrive was a guy in a MG nest who I darted. Then of course all hell broke loose with the armour incoming. Awesome game, have you completed it yet? I did it on delta too for the challenge...gets pretty hard towards the end.

Can you please provide good pints and bad points including multi player mode. This game is close to $100.00 Australian so I really need to know if it is worth buying.
Are the maps big ?
Are there any restriction in movement (crawl, kneel crouch etc)
If you can slam down as much detail it would be greatly appreciated.

:o Bloody good video, can you make more :hmm:I'm making a series actually, from begining to end. Cherry picking the points of interest.
On movement, you can go where you want in most cases, and for attacking specific points, you can usually hit it from more than one angle.
My only suggestion before you buy - DL the demo - it's large at 1.7 GB, but it will let you know how your rig will handle it. There is no restriction in the demo in what you can do, and the demo world is quite large. Bigger than you expect for a demo. It is a pretty good feel for what comes later, though it is missing aircraft and tanks - but if you look online, you can drive those two in the demo with a simple hack! :D

Actually the demo is the first part of the SP game in its entirety. It is almost
a game all by itself. I have played it many times just to get my skills up before
tackling the full game. I like to practice with the demo cause you don't have to
put the DVD in the drive (stupid anti-cheat) to play. AND the demo is FREE !!!

You seem to take alot more chances than I like to. I play in the stealthy
mode most of the time & hardly use the cloak at all. I just now took out 21
North Koreans in a small outpost on the beach. I hunkered down behind a
vehicle in the garage and killed most as they came to me. I watched their
feet & legs under the truck and knew when they would come into range of
my gun. I can't wait to get some MP going but don't like the stock MP that
came with the game at all. I need to create some co-op missions on BIG maps.

One more note - I tried to corale them. By constantly moving and shooting - shoot and scoot, notice that the NK's have no idea where to look for you, so they tend to congregate in one general area. This allows me to pick them off. Works on real people too in MP if they are acting like a team. If I lay low and hide, then they will spread out all over the place - good way to get killed!

I wonder how Crysis compares to COD4?
I found COD4 SP great it's like the previous cod games - "fast" action extreme, Im yet to play the SP of crysis so can't say which is better. The sniper rifle in COD4 works well theres a sniper mission where you and another sniper have to take out the enemy while waiting for the heli to arrive - when you fire that sniper rifle man i could feel those bullets connecting with their heads  COD4 SP is a bit on the short side though.

Theres a gamers made patch for crysis for old PC's limit AMD 2400, 2gigs ram 6600 or ATI 9600 rigs where this patch will enable the game to run in high to very high on older rigs. Ive haven't tried it as no need to with main PC but might if i ever install the game on the older one.

Have you ever wanted to enjoy every single vista- exclusive directX 10 effect
on your \"oldfashioned\" and \"outdated\" xp systems? Well, here\'s your chance!
Don\'t believe me? Look at the screenshots then - where\'s the difference?
Installation:
Start the .exe file and select \"apply patch\" under main options menu.
In case you don\'t like the patch, just remove it later by selecting
\"remove patch\" from the same menu.
If your game installation path differs from default, simply enter
the correct path into the \"enter directory path\" popup dialog as
soon as it shows up.
Problem i find it is still using Shader Module 3.0, not 4.0. Its impossible to force Dx10 API on a system with Dx9 software, let alone pre-dx10 hardware. It may look pretty, but its not true dx10 shaders.

k - Give me time here. I've finially made stage 6 play nice with my system - I can still use Xvid to do my encodings, and Stage 6 likes them now for some reason - probably because I never used any non Divx compatible Xvid settings for the encodings. You get less quality on the encoding, but the vid still looks good. With Xvid, I have full control over the compression ratio's of the I / P / B frames - something I don't like to give up.
I'll repost that town attack vid in a minute. Still uploading. This time you get full FPS and full detail (barely noticeable compression blocks, but I had to put a cap on the file size so I cut the file size into 1/2 what it originally was).

That is why you will find a CPU test in the bin directory.

I've got a Dual Core E6600 (IIRC) it's 2.4g with 2gb DDR2 and handles Crysis nicely. I did do what many people say is foolish and buy an 8800 Ultra though and that allows me to have all settings on very high. The auto detect settings even choose those settings, i love it!
No need to go overkill on the GFX card like me (i got it because i'm not married with kids and wanted it over a PS3..) but i'd suggest getting at least 2.4 ghz for a processor.

I'll probably end up over cloaking in the future but for now I don't need to plus it voids my warranty. Plus i'd need a much better case, you know how hot 8800s get!

An 8800 GTS should work fine. You will probably be able to play on High detail on that at lower resolutions.
ATI designs their XT and XTX products to overclock - doesn't void the warranty. They have a built in overclocking tool right in the driver control panel. It will automatically overclock your card to a safe setting. Mine seems to have a target GPU temp of about 90 C or slightly above. Max core GPU temp allowed on my board is 120 C so I am outside that by a wide margin at 90 C.

That depends a lot on your GPU , a Geforce 8800 with your specifications can do that quite easily from what I've heard.
So gentlemen, one last word of advice from you. Since AMD appears to have lost the Dual core race , which Intel Dual core processor do you recommend I purchase ? I don't want anything particularly at the top of the line, more of a medium-high range processor.

I don't want anything particularly at the top of the line, more of a medium-high range processor. Its simply a price issue. AMD is working on other things at the moment. Current top tog is Intel and Core 2 Duo. AMD will simply save you money at this point if you go with them, in which case you can buy a better GPU, or maybe 2 GPU's.
AMD has spent more time designing the interface between the CPU's by the way than Intel. They have a superior archetecture in this regard. In the future, expect dual core AMD CPU's coupled to dual core 3870 GPU or better, all on the exact same die. Care to have 2 video cards with that dual core CPU? It will be on it. Intel probably is scrambling to do a better dual / quad technology since they know what is coming down the pike from AMD shortly.
It is fun to sit back and be the consumer at points in time. Right now, this is one of those times!

Here is the latest 3 page review of Crysis from Gamespy:
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/ea-crytek-title-untitled-project/839785p1.html
BTW, a modder over at Crymod.com has made a autoexec file that gives the
game much more graphic ability from an older PC system. I run the game on
about the lowest settings and it did wonders for what I see now. Framerates
were improved too. I really love the SP maps but the MP is way off base for
me. They need to create a co-op mode in MP to take advantage of the
fantastic maps that SP is using and modders are making....

In regards to crysis tweaking, i found this pretty informative post:
http://www.incrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=11614
I tried the above linked autoexec.cfg and i think it acutally made my frame rate worse, so i went about trying to make my own. One thing noticed is that some of the most FPS killing variables are the shaders. In particular the vegetation and landscape shaders. Its looking like an all or nothing deal on some things.
For example if you cull some of the vegetation rendering to save on FPS, the shadows stick out more, and they flicker like a mofo' and its god aweful ugly. So if you turn the shadows off, all the shaders on vegetation and landscape become pointless. If i could stop that shadow flicker, id be in like flynn.

Ill have to experiment more later. I swear i spent all last night, and part of this morning, just playing with the autoexec.cfg.

Figured out how to stop the stuttering shadows.
r_ShadowGen=0 (edit: this doesnt work, because the shadow rendering is limited elsewhere, so no new shadows are drawn, its just the immediate area when you firrst load the game).
Heres the autoexec im experimenting with, seems to work good so far. For ingame options With the exception of textures which i set to low, everything else is at medium. Can play with most of the goodies on, with alot less lag.
(edit: Major fight fights, the terrain and plant shaders are just too much.)

Ive never seen such a fantastic looking game before.
The game has been sitting in my draw for the past couple months and i have only just got round to playing it.
Got to the aircraft carrier part and almost lost my jaw

I am still waiting for Crytek to include the co-op MP feature. This would
make it a perfect game that myself and a few buddies could square off
against the NK bots....
