The Slurpee Edition:

I haven't tried them yet . . . I'll wait and read the DriverHeaven forums for a while before I try them.

I did notice that the Release notes didn't mention anything about the problems that we AGP card owners were having with Crysis (especially the Radeon X1950 series). There was nothing in the fixes nor in the known issues section . . . yet they released a hotfix specifically for that problem one or two weeks ago (not that it would install for me). Oh well, some rain, some shine. Luckily my PC at work runs Crysis just fine.:yep:

I am still running 7.6 - for one reason - anything later makes my X1650 die after about 10 minutes of Company of Heroes. May try it - but will likely have to roll back.

From neowin
"Note that ATi (http://www.neowin.net/news/software/07/11/21/ati-catalyst-711#) recommends Crysis players to continue using the 7.10 Hotfix drivers (http://www.neowin.net/news/software/07/11/21/ati-catalyst-711#)."

Also a user there reported the same problems Captain Haplo mentioned with the 7.7 thru 7.10 drivers (he hadn't tried the 7.11 yet)

I have not had any issues with the 07.7(file 7-7) catalyst and X1950. Haven't tried 7.11 yet.

I'm still running 7.6. The 7.10 driver installed would not start the 3D engine. I spent a good hour dumping and rolling back the driver.

Glad to see I am not the only one that has had some problems beyond 7.6 - one would think ATI would be a bit more careful in their driver releases. Ah well - at least the bugger is stable and more than fast enough for me.

I forgot to mentione, the person reporting the problems with the newer drivers was running an x1600.

Doesn't seem to be an issue with the x1950 though.

Running 7.11 with PCI-E X1950 Pro's in crossfire, and no problems. Crossfire even seems to work a bit better than before(anti-aliasing used to switch off after 1 min of SH4), although it gives you very little if any performance gains with SH4. Even renaming the game executable to for example fear.exe, which works in ArmA, does almost nothing in SH4.

I've got an X1600 AGP and am still using 7.7 drivers. All the newer versions have introduced one problem or another :damn: and resulted in a return to good ol' 7.7. What's going on, ATI? :hmm:

As for 7.11, I may have to give 'em a try just too see what else they break.

Update: Well, I gave them a go and it's back to 7.7! I got the infamous "Unable to start 3D engine" after installing and trying to run SHIV.

Kriller, I tried Omega's driver, too. No luck there. But I'm glad it resolves the problem for some people. For now I'm happy to have SH4 running smooth on my home PC and Crysis on my work PC.

Put in 7.11 with no trouble on my X1950. I have not had trouble installing and running games on any catalyst I've used on any Radeon card (I've had several.) I'm one of those rare peeps who uses the Catalyst software remover from the add-remove programs before installing a new driver. It's important to click cancel when rebooting and the detect new hardware dialog appears.

-Pv-Not so rare...

I learned years ago that with an ATI card you've got to clean out all the old ATI stuff before installing newer drivers.

There was a time when you even had to manually go in and delete all references to ATI from the registry.

Luckily since then ATI has made all of that easier. Just follow the directions for installing new drivers exactly as ATI states. I've never had any problems when doing that.

I've used DriverCleaner for near forever. My current XP install is going on 3 years without a reinstall (I know, I know), and I've been through 3 graphics cards (both ATI and Nvidia), and countless drivers. You use it in safe mode, it completely wipes all old drivers from the system so a new driver gets a fresh install.

Try the new Driver Sweeper download at guru3d. It'll clean ATi, Nvidia, Realtek and other drivers- and it's free.

Hmmm, I wonder if its the same program (just new name) of the DriverCleaner utility I've used for years. When I originally got the program it was freeware, but when I looked for an updated version of it last year or so it was $$$. I'll have to take a look at this Driver Sweeper.

Well I cleaned everything out and went 7.11 - we will see if I see the same problems.

I've installed the Omega drivers, and the seem to work great, but I get a little number in the upper right hand corner of SHIV that stays in the high 20's and changes from red to yellow and back. What does it mean? I tried looking on the Omega website and either there isn't any info on it, or I just couldn't find it (which is possible).

 That is your FPS count. It's the result of Ati Tray Tools having been installed with the Omega drivers, and can be turned on or off from the ATT settings.

msi 1950pro pcie, no problems, even the lovely green line round the edge of the screen has gone. though i did uninstall everything with ati uninstaller 1st, then ran driver cleaner.net before rebooting, learnt from bitter experience that anything left behind on a radeon tends to annoy the thing, as for the omegas, ive used them right upto the 7.10 cats, and i highly recommend them, just make sure youve removed all the old drivers before installing them, anyway, cat 7.11 are all okay here.

Well, to my pleasant suprise - a clean install of 7.11 and things are stable. Thanks for the heads up on the cleaning - even us old techies get slack and forget the basics sometimes. Sure does work now though - not only in SH4 but COH ran for 3 hours last night with no issues. Sweet.

Did you do "clear" installation?
Before installation deleted ALL previous ATI driver files and ATI register entries ...

I'll wait till next monday, and try for myself.

Then I'll write an user feedback to ATI.

Any reply to ATI users who sent feedback about this?

Yeah, I used Driver Cleaner in ssafe mode to clear out all the previous ATI drivers, but I may have missed something. I've tried it twice so far with the same results though. ATI has either made a driver set that is incompatible with our AGP cards or their driver is so finicky that it is almost impossible to install correctly.
I've been an Nvidia user up until this point, and I thought I would give ATI a try. I will definitely not buy any more ATI products now though.
