View Full Version : How often did real kaleunt's miss?

After playing SH2 and SH3 for years using automatic targeting, I'm trying to up the realism a bit using OLC GUI and manual targeting. The thing is, sometimes I still miss even after firing a spread. My question is, in real life, how often did firing solutions turn out wrong? I don't know whether I should just reload my savegame or go on assuming sometimes you just miss...

Thats a really good question, i dont think i have ever seen any real hard figures on hit percentages, but i would give them 1 in 3 ?

it would be nice if someone here knows the answer! :hmm:

Remember reading that of the 870 or so U-Boats that sailed on operational patrols something like 550 of them never managed to sink a ship at all. Dont know how many of them just never found targets or how many were just bad shots. Surprised me that so many never sank anything

On average more than 50% of the shots fired missed or malfunctioned. Obviously it is a parameter that is captain-dependant but on average the success rate of torpedo attacks was not too good.

Maybe they were shooting from long range - in SH3 it's hard to miss at close range (like 700m). If you know the speed within two knots, you can hit. As for malfunctions, I almost never get duds in GWX 1.03. Sometimes I get unlucky and a keel-shot bounces off the hull in heavy weather, but if I set for a shallow run (like 3m) at approx 90 AoB, I'd like to think I almost never get a dud. I've had some great luck with pattern-running torps - like - speed estimate off by 3 or 4 kts, and have it catch the guy on the return. If I have to take a shot from say...2 or 3km away, it's rare that I hit the target. At those ranges, pattern running is a must for me, unless my data are perfect (like from a radio report).

just thinking about it - maybe my firing data are unrealistically good because I use stabilize view for the periscope. I bet if I were to uncheck that, I would have some major range variations in anything but calm weather. Maybe then I'd miss more. But in the end, I like hitting as often as I do. I miss with about 1-3 of my shots each patrol. I usually bag about 7-10 ships a patrol. Unrealistic, but damn fun.

I think basically because SH3 is based on a hard mathematical model as long as you make accurate solutions and the target stays on course you will not miss. I guess it's only down to practice and experience, not skewed equipment.

of course there is the equation of randomized duds to figure into the mix.

With Wolfe tweak mod I load out with the TV's (G7es)....I dare em to get close...

I think the hit %age would be around 30-50% depending on malfunctions miscalculations and skill of teh receiving captain and crew.

Don't forget most kaleuns shot several torps at a target

Bear in mind the alarming amount of Uboats that were sunk on their maiden patrol!
