Hi, on one of my missions I ran into a japanese convoy, i'm talking about 7 cargo ships and 3 destroyers, i took out 2 destroyers but the 3th got me by suprise, the depth charges destroyed some equipment (repairable) but also my rudder is gone/destroyed. i fled from the convoy but i can't turn anymore, is there something i can do about this? Or do i have to restart this mission??

Well in real life I think you could turnby running only one of the propellors. On SH4 I don't think theres anything you can do except drown.

I'm afraid there is nothing you can do to rectify the situation. The game doesn't allow you to turn the sub without the rudder, so you will have to abandon the mission or reload a prior save game.

The inability to turn your sub using the screws is sadly an oversight by the game devs.

I just tried a mission for the first time without an external camera on top of manual targeting.

I have got to be the worst capitano in the Pacific, manual targeting is a beast; however, I did sink three ships and two life rafts...and I somehow survived being without the camera.

Only to have my rudder forcefully removed by two ornery DDs.

Now that's a fine how-do-you-do.

Needless to say, I ended my career.

http://neptoon.homestead.com/TOWED.jpgOr maybe Onstar? I locked the keys up in her in port the other day and they saved me a very embarrasing trip to the admirals office.:p

Yeah, same thing happened to me on one of my patrols. I was happily steaming home after a successful mission with a nice number of tonnage in my records. Suddenly I got surprised by a G4M Betty whilst surfaced. Manned the AA- guns and watched my crew turning the attacker into a ball of flames. The poor pilot, now mad, did a nice kamikaze right into to the stern of my sub, taking my rudder with him to the bottom of the ocean.

A good thing is that I was smart enough to save about 20- mins before this little accident.

S is for the many ships I'm siiiinking
C is for my crewman, that I love
R is for my Recon trips a'slinking
E is for the enemy above
W is for the water that will hide me
D is for the DCs that never end

Good one.

You need MacGyver. One piece of aluminum foil and paperclip is all he needs to get you patched up. When done with the rudder he can fashion a nuclear warhead for your torpedoes using the same material. :smug:

Nah he also needs a stick of gum for the nuke.

That's why you should save often.

I always make it a point to save before I engage ships/convoys and after I have sunk some ships.

I also make a different save when engaging armed targets. I once got in a clinch with some Akizukis on my S-44. They DCed me, but I managed to sink two and thought I'm alive. I come back to the base (the sub did sail kinda weird though), and they say me I can't ride this rust bucket full of holes anymore, wondering how did I even make it to the harbour and that they'll give me another ship. Yay! An S-18. :nope:

I hope this soon to be released patch will allow independent engine use so you can turn when your rudder is fubar & the possibility of calling for help at sea. It would add to the immersion factor for me at least.

One would think rudders might have more hit points. We all want eng. control,it's only R/L:yep: :sunny:

If you are counting on rudder functionality change in patch 1.4 you'll be setting yourself up for disspointment. You are discovering why so many sub commanders were accused of being timid. It was very risky to attack an enemy who could fight back and lives were at stake. Among our most aggressive commanders are bones at the bottom. I've sunk more ships than I can count and haven't lost an engine or rudder yet. Also, I don't attack everything I see, and of those I do attack, I do so when conditions are strongly in my favor.

I lost my rudder the other day and was a little upset, afterall I survived the fight but was left stranded in the middle of the ocean with no options.

The ability to call for supplies would be great although obviously if i'm deep into enemy waters I should have the ability to scuttle the boat.

Those who have never lost a rudder before, I have three words for you.

BE MORE AGGRESSIVE!

:arrgh!:

Brenjen

I agree witht the more aggressive comment. It's a game & for me that means action; if someone wants to bother cruising for days instead of using the time compression that's fine with me. If they want to follow real sub tactics to the letter; that's fine too. That equals months of boredom though.

Myself....I'll surface & blast away with my deck gun if I got to big for my britches with a trio of DD's - (those little digital sailors aren't really dead when I'm an overly aggressive capn') I'd just like the ability to keep going when my rudder is done in & independent engine control would suffice; I don't think that's too much to ask for. I don't want a rudder that can't be destroyed or has been hardened.....just some common sense realistic options. In real life the sailors could go over the side & work on damage; I'm not even advocating anything approaching that.

For the record most of my damage comes when I've got empty tubes & I'm heading home on time compression. Most of my flat out deaths occur when I have torps & targets abound.....I just can't let go, I'm stubborn like that - "Damn the torpedoes" & all that.
