View Full Version : Beating off multiple destroyers with a deck gun?

Just ran into a 8 ship convoy escorted by 5 small DD's, and they were perfectly happy to not depth charge me, and stayed in a nice place doing 5 knots until I lined up a shot on them. When I did get to surface, I sank 2 with my Porpoise deck gun, and and last one fled..
is this normal? Just seems odd that I could fend off ships that should be vastly superior to me on the surface anyhow.
Thanks!

Normal? Absolutly not. In stock your gun is overpowered. Enemies are inept. Tmaru is a good mod to try if that bothers you. In Tmaru, destroyers will pound you into pieces. They will also do a randomly decent job of depth charging you if you arent careful.

The USS Salmon I believe did in real life except it wasnt told if they were destroyers. of course it was a radio message in plain english that kept them away. They radioed the posisition of the small convoy and the escorts started pinging away looking for the other subs. In the battle the Salmon got within 50 yards of one of the escorts and opend up with all guns including whatever small arms they had They killed the entire deck crew on that escort. The agressive tactics confusied the escorts. The salmon made an escape into a rain squall.

I suppose you could pull it off in the game as it is.
I dont know Ive never tried. I dont really view the DD's as a target. Rather an obsticle between me and my targets best to be avoided.

Its just a matter of tactics you use against them. They are a Well designed AI and by the looks are designed to alter there tactics based on your tactics. I have in the past sunk all the destroyers. I kept my fantail pointed at them and sunk them with the gun. Keep as low of a profile as you can to make there shots that much harder. Keep at flank and alter your course as much as possable. I have made a few DD's run from me. I had one abandon the Convoy and run for Japan once. I guess I dammaged him enough that he was scared... I am very agressive in my tactics. I scared off a Subchaser lastnight by firing a salvo of torpedos at him. Of couse he caught me off guard. he was being silent as well. I went in after the convoy moved off and the DD's gave up on me. He was sitting a a few 1000 yards off the Merchant that I had caused to go dead in the water. Well I had secured from silent running and had the gramaphone playing and was making all sorts of noise. Lucky I spotted him in time and I set up an attack on him. I fired all four foward tubes at him and he was busy dodgeing Torpedos. He made a run away from me just as I was getting lined up to fire the aft at him. I guess I supprised him more then he did me.

I see anything that floats as a target. DD's can be sunk with the best of them. Just read the history of the Japanese DD's at wiki. Alot of them were sunk by American Subs. Maby half of them by what I have read. So the Real skippers were an agressive bunch as well.
Just a little of my Handy work.
