I left Pearl on Jan 13, 42 for East China Sea area. On the way I stopped for fuel at Midway and then I thought I'd just check out Wake Island to see if they had a port or just palm trees.

Oops ! I almost pood myself when shore batteries opened up on me. Yikes!

The Japs were there!

No damage, but from now on I'll pay attention to the date !!:rotfl:

I remember my first time approaching some shore batteries to see if they were more than 'eye candy'. A coupla splashy straddles quickly convinced me they were. :p

There is a strait near Java that I found if I use it that I better run it submerged. There is a Shore Battery on the East side of the strait that sent me limping home at the start of one of my patrols. Its the narrow strait to the south west corner of the Java sea and I was comming up from Fremantile. Most of the times I just avoid running thru there.

Had a similar experience to that of captaindon. I was not so lucky though as the first shots slammed straight into me destroying my diveplanes and some of my batteries (I guess this didn't matter since I couldn't submerge anyway). I did make it back to port at least but that was the first patrol I made it back from with 0 tonnage.

I remember my first experience with shore batterys.

It was a photo recon mission, the pickets were way off in the distance, I decided to surface to get a better shot. When suddenly ziiip BANG.

Woah ! WTF ! where did that come from ? I took two or three rounds and a bit of damage before I figured it out.

My first experience with the batteries was a complete surprise. I got the same mission again, deploy and hunt merchants. Last time I did, I found a small port near Bismarck sea and picked out a few medium tankers and destroyers. I don't know how it happened, but next time I went for a run there (completely surfaced, guns blazing), I was warmly welcomed with shore battery fire (I could swear those weren't there last time) :shifty:

After the add-on you likely to encounter U-boot there also !!

I knew about them but still occasionally...forgot their existence...until I ventured too close to the shore of Japan chasing a tugboat and started taking incoming fire.

That whoosh noise as the shells fly by does get the attention, doesn't it?:yep:

Freaking shore batteries.

I was patroling in the straights between Honshu and Hokkaido, near the point off Hakodate, and I got a little too close to the north shore when ... "We're under attack Sir!" ...

I popped out to find the culprit but there was narry a ship in sight. A couple more splashes and a ... "We're taking damage Sir!" ... before I figured it as shore batteries.

Wasn't too much physical damage, I went PD and snuck out. On the way out however, I ended up with a contact report and a small task force of 1 DD and 2 gunboats was headed for the area of the encounter at flank speed. I went deep and quiet and let them pass.
