Hello all,

last night I completed the Naval Academy and became operational! I'm hoping to go on patrol later today.

I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me so far. I'm sure I'll need more help soon!! LOL

The game's great and very addictive; time flies by (where did Wednesday night go??). It seems to be running between 30 and 50 FPS, mostly 30, so I wish I could get it going a bit faster; I guess I'll need to play with the textures and particles.

Thanks again everyone; good hunting, Gavin.

Welcome to Subsim Nerazzurri. :arrgh!:

Anything above 23 FPS is good/faster than the human eye can register.

Some gfx cards and monitors actually run better/higher FPS if they are syncronized.

You may be seeing graphic tearing instead of stuttering. Try enabling the syncronizing option with the in-game options. At the very least it will virtually wipe out graphic tearing.

Kpt. Lehmann,

will do with the synch. I hadn't considered adjusting that, as most threads on the subject here are of the opinion that it should be turned off. I'll give it a try later. Thanks.

Congratz, Kaleun Nerrazzuri!
We expect great things from you. Stay out of shallow water, read the articles in my website and destroy the enemy.

Sometimes its good, sometimes not. If it doesn't work out for you, it is easy to turn off.

What you will typically see one the counter when the synch is enabled, is a lower FPS that is "stable" moreso than the rapidly fluctuating default "free" FPS.

Best of luck to you.

Congretulations, Nerazzurri!
Now be very careful in the real thing.
I hope you do well.

OK, just a bit of detail on the graphics. Naval Academy, artillery training, firing on ship directly in front of uboat, viewing through binoculars -

on initial settings was getting 48 FPS falling to low 30's as ship took more damage.

turned synch on, steady 30 FPS

adjusting texture and particle options made no difference to the 30 FPS, it only had a negative effect on the graphics.

Also tried a few things on the NVidia control panel, to no avail.

So I'm just going to leave it with high textures, 100% particles and synch turned on; 30 FPS certainly isn't brilliant, but it's not the worst either. I'll settle for that just now. If I ever want to add mods that eat into that I'll think about again.

Problem is, most games don't slow down with low FPS, they drop frames to compensate. Those dropped frames are perceivable as jerkiness. Edit: In fact more often than not frame rate is tied directly to gameplay speed. Since the card is generating what you see on the fly rather than just playing it as in a film, the game only runs as fast as the frames are drawn. Depends totally on the way the game was designed though and what frame rate it was meant to run at.

Bonjour nerazzurri. If lowering graphics settings didn't affect your FPS then your graphics adapter is probably adequate and you need to look at your CPU or RAM.

I just started my first career too! After 10 days I've competed 12 patrols... how time flies. Quick tip, if attackign merchants in English waters, prepare for TONS of airplanes to come down on top of you real soon.

About FPS. I have a GeForce 7600GT. Can I override the games graphics settings with the Nvidia control pannel?

If you go to the NVidia control panel and then the 3D controls you should find a list of games which each have their own settings already programmed, so that when you launch a game the card automatically runs what it thinks is the preferred settings.

This seems to work OK for me with SH3. If it's not so good for you, you could try setting the 'standard one size fits all' 3D control to 'performance' rather than 'quality' and take it from there.

Hope that helps you a bit. If not, let me know and I'll try to help.

Regards, Gavin.

P.S. 12 missions in 10 days?!?!?!?!? LOL

Yes, I noticed this recently too...my rig runs better when the synchronized option is checked...I get a constant 60 FPS, unless near port/land.

I get some wierd stuttering effect without it checked...even at 60fps.
