Asked how many countries there were in the world, only a third were correct in choosing 193. A third of people thought Mount Everest was either in the Alps or the UK - it is in Nepal - and only half of respondents knew that the Nile was the world's longest river.

The findings follow a separate survey carried out earlier this week by the British Council, which showed that UK children aged 11 to 16 have the lowest international awareness among their age group in 10 countries.
Haha i'll laugh until somebody shows figures that show Australia has a similar level.
I knew about Everest and The Nile but I didn't know the EXACT number of countries in the world. Afterall there are so many in Europe, Africa and South America that i've never heard of. Not to mention the many small Island nations dotted around the globe.
Plus I still think it's more fun to mock a yank than a brit, I don't know why but it's just how it goes. :p

Ankara but I only know that because I always think Constantinople which is now Istanbul so if you've a date in Constantinople she'll be waiting in Istanbul.

A recent study (multiple choice format) amongst German teenagers having finished school or are being close to finishing it, saw answers like Helmut Kohl having been the last head of state of the GDR, the wall being errected by America, the GDR having been a "Basisdemokratie" (=basic democracy?) and Angela Merkel being the head of some international charity foundation.
But probably the latest entries for the charts for cellphone sounds they all knew while sleeping.
Please hold such answers in high respect. They are coming from those who will be the future of our nations.
