I've patrolled the Luzon area many times starting in Dec.'41, but still haven't seen it. Lookouts are under orders to keep their eyes peeled for it, and my RADAR is on. Isn't there a special 'prize' or sig allowed to those who provide proof of their sighting?

I haven't seen the Flying Dutchman, but I did locate a 'Devils Triangle' near the Molucca Sea. Position: 126 30'E, 2 30'S Entry into this area causes instant CTD. Cause unknown at this time.

:D Yep, I saw this ghost ship last night.
I remember I sunk 2 enemy shipping groups (15 + ships? refit in between.) before I saw this thing.

Gunner won't open fire on it, so I did it myself. After I hit it couple of times and + 1 torpedo hit, it stopped and nothing will hit it ever again. I even drove my sub right through it.

The name of the ship is - "What is it". I guess it's a joke from the developers. :D

I was North of Luzon when I had a radar contact that was moving at very high speed. When I click on the contact on the radar the title said "What is this". I tried to catch it at flank but I never could. All I saw on the bridge was a blue-gray fog. That was the closest I've gotten and it was only the once.

What is funny, the first time I encountered it I heard it on the sonar. I did not know Capt Kid had two diesels on his tall ship. Anyway, the crew stopped sniffing the fuel and we never saw the ship again.

I saw her several times while on patrol in the Luzon Straits in the first stock version of SH4. Plotted speed at around 35kts if I remember right. Couldn't chase her down. Haven't seen her after later patches and with mods added.

Time wise, don't remember for sure, but I was using gato/balao class on assigned area near Luzon, probably 50 miles out with a 72 hr patrol. Radar Contact only.

Heading NE on one occasion and NW on another.

I did manage to get some screen shots.

It's funny I see this thread. I just spotted the Dutchman for the first time a little bit ago. I posted some shots in the screenshot thread if anyone is interested. I had spotted it while patrolling the Luzon Straits. I picked it up on radar and moved to intercept. To my surprise I saw the Flying Dutchman.

It's funny how I found it in the Luzon strait (As Always). I Happen to use a mod where you have a modern submarine, Top speed 36 knots. I don't remember the exact speed of this ghost ship, but it was something around 35 as I barely caught up with it with full speed. Strange how it suddenly disappeared...:hmmm:

Note: First shot with deck gun was short. But I got two more shots off at a range of 2,000 yds with the deck gun. Both passed through the target. It is moving away in a northerly/easterly direction at 23.5 kts.

Kudos to the developers! The fabled existence of this ghost ship adds interest to the game. Late afternoon in the S-boat, December 1941, 20 miles due south of Formosa, I stumbled upon a faint sonar contact, 6700 yards distant, due east. Visibility was perfect but nothing was in sight.

I hit the throttle --- no simple matter with enemy aircraft on patrol. Four hours at flank speed brought me no closer. As dusk fell I peered into the grey horizon, expecting the appearance of the ghostly apparition.

Alas, nothing appeared. No ghost --- no ship --- nothing but a persistent but invisible sonar contact 6700 yards away, moving at precisely 11 knots --- just fast enough to tease, but too fast to catch in the S-boat. I gave up the chase.

Could this have been the Flying Dutchman of lore?

You are mislabelling the ship. It is a known by most as a "ghost" ship. I have seen a video closeup of some of its crew, and they looked like pirate ghosts. Are you saying it does not exist? Or are you quibbling over the semantics of what someone has labelled it. As far as I am concerned it makes no difference. (i.e., in Homer's Iliad, he sometimes refers to chariots as "cars.")

the real issue is, in my opinion, the fact that a ghost ship was inserted in the game by ubisoft. Personally, I think it is a great move, and displays imagination with a sense of humor. I had heard about it for years before I appeared in the early morning hours and the coordinate mentioned in my post.

IGD, are you suggesting we try to pinpoint the 'fliegende hollander' by the means of posting all sigthings in an specific thread? Like, an objective and scientific quest to unveil the characteristics of "the ubisoft ghost ship"?

Because if you are... I'm game for it. This should be fun. The first thing we should check is if appears randomly on the map, or if it follows a pre-determined route that does not variate.

Has anyone tried to go to barbarinna's indication? Was it there?

I was not "suggesting." I was commenting.

However (and I do not think the "indication" is the correct word), I think your last sentence is exactly that, a "suggestion," and a very good suggestion at that. Let's pin that sucker down, build a mod to attack it, and kick some a--!. (You got me excited!!!) You can call it Hazel if you want, but this is what the developers called it:

[Unit 1]
Name=The Flying Dutchman
DOC=19410505
DOD=21001231

As for it not being a "pirate ship', the legend/story began hundreds of years ago, and it was a Dutch sailing ship not a 'pirate ship' in many of the early accounts. In fact in several of the first legends, the "Flying Dutchman' refered to the captain, NOT the ship, the ship was not named.
Of course over the years the ship name became the 'Flying Dutchmen'. But since the early legends have it as a Dutch ship, not a pirate ship, it could look like anything, after all it is only a legend.

Okay. Fair enough. I won't correct your "linguistal mistakes." I forgot that your are from Brazil, where all those beautiful women live. However, I reserve the right to criticize your movie references. A better one would have been this. See IMDb - Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951.) The Dutchman (James Mason) and his boat show up in some country like France or Greece. The prettiest woman (Ava Gardener) in town falls for him, and they die in a trajedy, foretold in the legend. The reference to My Fair Lady is pretty good though. Audrey Hepburn is a knock out. If you want to see her in a terrific role, for which she won an Oscar I believe, I recommend highly Roman Holiday (1953), which is hilarious. She plays a young princess, just coming into her own, who runs wild in Rome. It co stars Gregory Peck. The ending is a classic.

By the way, if you want some fun, try ATO. It is a very good supermod.

Stock SH4 1.4, I am encountering this Blue-Green shimmering Ghost Ship January 17, 1942, nearing sundown, it trails red blood in its wake. It is under attack by 3 Japanese ships and 1 plane and firing back. It is following me at my surface flank speed of 18 knots near 21'9"N, 122'21"E, just north of the islands north of Luzon in the Luzon Straits. It has chased and scared my crew pretty badly, and we were running crazy to get away for a long time. Later in the night, out of torpedoes on the way back to base to refit, we barely survived a Japanese attack, but they amazingly depth charged themselves in shallow waters! Go figure . . .

I was originally thinking of the Flying Dutchman from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Then, turning it onto a full-blown mod in SH4. Crews shown on deck when Battle-Stations active would be replaced with POTC-style crew, the ship would be fully submersible, the battery would be used as a "fast-travel" item... The ship would also use, from the movie, the triple-cannons on front, the cannons (however many) on the sides, doubles on the back... "Almost indestructible" as in: it'll take a lot to sink it. And finally, I thought about a Kraken attack, but thought that went to far. This is all what I was imagining it'd be like if created. I don't have the skills to do it, but if I ever acquire said skills..... I'd try my best.:rock:

Pics....?????
There are no pics, since it's not really in the game.

It's like Japanese carriers. People make up stories about seeing them, too, but they aren't actually in the game either.

No pictures of the Flying Dutchman, but I have a saved game around the time I saw him so if anyone is desperate I can try again. I'm happy with my honour though! Not sure what I would gain by my post six months after the thread was dormant! :hmmm:

I did manage to run into Bungo Pete quite quickly after finding the TMO mission. Here is a screenshot (thank you for the advice on how to do it) of him safely docked in 441m of water! :D

My screen shots are apparently way too big to post here. I use the 1920x 1080 res for the game, which makes the bitmap pics huge. How can I produce them in a size that will allow postings?:/\\!!

You canīt see it in the Museum, but it is in the roster, in the Netherlands folder.

With S3D you can see it, or search it in patrol....Luzon Straits is a favorite water for these ghosts....

Best regards.

Here is an old picture I got of The Ghost.
I was just under water a few feet and all of a sudden all hell broke loose.
I panicked thinking someone sees me. Shells were flying around everywhere.
I hit the external camera to see this shot of the IJN task force hammering
the hell out of the ghost ship.

SH3 stock don't have the ghost ship. I don't remember if there is a mod or it is included in GWX. The model is the stock SH4 imported in SH3. It is the same model but in SH4 looks better - probably because of shaders etc.

Best regards.

Ok, this explains something that happened last night. My REAL last night, not last night in the sim. :)

I was about 50 nautical miles east of Japan. I didn't see anything because I was submerged over 200 feet down and it was night. I got a sonar hit and it showed up on my map. Using the 3:14 minute rule, I plotted it's course and speed. It was doing a whopping 40+ knots. Even with no time compression at all, I could easily the sonar contact moving straight in my general direction. It was on a heading that allowed to cut the corner and head it off and so, I went for it climbing to periscope depth to take a look. Just as I reached periscope depth, the sonar contact just faded away and there was nothing in the scope. I thought that this was really odd but forgot about it. Now that i see this thread, I'm thinking darn darn darn. Serves me right for not running on the surface at night anyway.

@woodenboat : 40 knots ? I think it was a french destroyer ... :ahoy:

MODed speed but now can not find it. same location, date and time but it seems when you restart your career things change.

I have seen it too, in stock (non-uboat) game.

It comes into view, it's there a while, then it's gone.

And, razark, it's not a fake screenshot, it looks like that.

I've only seen it once.

It is in stock, and a lot of the mods. Since it's an RGG event - Random Generated Group - the computer determines if and when it will generate. I cannot remember the frequency setting, but it is rather low. It will glow on the horizon, whether day or night, when seen from a distance. There are "people" onboard, including in the rigging, and it does have cannons... They gave it a prop sound, like the jet in the movie Airplane, but in this case, not for the comedy as much as so that it would show up on sonar and you might chase it and see it's eery glow... btw, it does fly the flag of the Netherlands, if you catch it in your periscope. I don't know what that long, streaming thingie is flying from the mainmast, but it certainly isn't a skull and crossbones...:o - I've not ever seen it encounter an IJN Task Force, but that might be kind of fun to watch...

just don't tell anybody where you got the info...

Notice all the alternate routing it can use? It's very similarly configured in stock.

... for some reason, in a LOT of mods, this is like the Bermuda triangle. All sorts of strange happenings near here...

And, razark, it's not a fake screenshot, it looks like that.
All I see is people posting pictures of empty ocean, claiming there's a ship there. I think the lot of y'all have been at sea too long. Next it's going to be mermaids and AI subs firing torpedoes that you're talking about!

have you guys ever noticed how you don't see max-peck and the Flying Dutchman at the same time?...
So... the plot thickens.

I've never seen it and I've been playing SH4 for 6 years on and off.
Six years? Heh. I've been playing since the game was released. It was only in the last year that I saw a Japanese carrier in the campaign.
