Kitsap County man hospitalized after using shotgun to loosen lug nut

09:49 AM PST on Monday, November 12, 2007
Associated Press

SOUTHWORTH, Wash. - A man trying to loosen a stubborn lug nut blasted the wheel with a 12-gauge shotgun, injuring himself badly in both legs, Kitsap County sheriff's deputies said.

The 66-year-old man had been repairing a Lincoln Continental for two weeks at his home northwest of Southworth and east of Port Orchard and had gotten all but one of the lug nuts off the right rear wheel before getting frustrated Saturday afternoon, Deputy Scott Wilson said.

"He's bound and determined to get that lug nut off," Wilson said.

From about arm's length the man fired the shotgun at the wheel and was "peppered" in both legs with 00 buckshot and other debris, with some injuries as high on his body as his chin, according to a sheriff's office report.

"Nobody else was there and he wasn't intoxicated," Wilson said.

South Kitsap Fire and Rescue personnel treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Tacoma General Hospital with injuries Wilson described as "severe but not life-threatening."

He said deputies were unable to get a full statement from the man, relying only on what they could learn while medics treated him at the scene.

"I don't think he was in any condition to say anything," Wilson said. "The pain was so severe, and the shock."

What on earth did he think he would achieve by blasting the nuts (no pun intended) with a shotgun?

Hey, being one who works on cars a lot, I really wouldn't mind taking a shotty to some of these things... Though I wouldn't go about it quite so stupidly.

Reminds me of when I took my old Apple computer out for a little target practice. :arrgh!:

He would only get an honourable mention, as he still lives and breaths. Maybe next time he could just shoot himself and save everyone the hassel!:dead:

Well, I can understand the frustration at not being able to get a wheel nut off, I have an old Land Rover! But everyone knows a blowtorch on the nut for 2 mins and an extension bar will shift even the rustiest jammed on nut.

Using a shotgun though!? It does indicate that 'the right to bear arms' is not always a good thing, and these sort of people are allowed to vote and have kids! Which is not good news for the world in general.

What an idiot.

Guaranteed to free rusted bolts and nuts.....even on a Lincoln. Then again, this guy would probably put a flame to the spray thus making a blow torch and then have the can explode. Some one give this guy the number to a repair shop instead.

Which is not good news for the world in general....Prove to me that this was not a good thing? :D I can't think of a more fitting way to teach firearm safety! :p Do stupid things and stupid things happen! Perfect! And yes, the right to bear arms is always 'unconditionally' a good thing.
