Hello all,

I'm a newbie here. I've got the Silent Hunter 3 DVD-ROM to install and I wondered if any of you could tell me important/good free downloads that I should get.

I don't want to start playing until I've got the correct patches/expansions to enable the game to run well, and also have interesting add-ons.

Ones I've noticed so far are Patch v1.4B, SH3 commander, Generic Mod Enabler and of course GWX. Are these all viewed to be 'must haves'? And are there others I should look for?

If you could let me know the most up to date versions, please, so as I'm not downloading obsolete files.

Thank you very much, in advance, for any help you can give.

Kind regards, Gavin.

Huge amounts, mods, skins all sorts. Here are a few but others will probably add more.

Thank you for the input so far.

I should have posted my hardware because it's not the most up to date computer! I don't want things massively slowing down.

Intel Pentium 4
2.8 GHZ
1GB RAM
NVidia GeForce 6200 (128 ram I think)
Windows XP

Another 1Gb or memory would help enormously. I run mine through an Athlon AM2 3200+ and an ATI X800 XT 256. X2 Gb memory.

I realise more RAM would be good (so would a better graphics card - but at the moment finances dictate nothing will be changing :-(

So, really, as I said earlier, necessary and important downloads please; to help me with a good gaming experience.

Thanks, Gavin.

Welcome aboard Kaleun Nerazzurri :arrgh!:

Your system specs look fine. If I had to point at a weakness (and just about every system has one) it would be your graphics card.

You should be fine....enjoy the GWXperience

At least he's not running this on a laptop that has a GeForce GOFX 5700  Now that'll keep ya from running GWX, let me tell ya  :yep:

Nerazzurri, an important piece of advice.... ;)

Do Not install, or uninstall, any mods while at sea. Only install them while you are in port between patrols.

Get and use JSGME for your mod installs. SH3 Commander 2.7 is also a very good thing to have and use.

And to keep you mods safe, burn them to a DVD or put them on a separate HDD used only for storage.

And last but most important... get GWX. You'll be glad you did even if you have to wait to use it once you can upgrade your system. :yep:

Thanks for your advice everybody, I can't wait to get started later today.

Just one more thing; when I start SH3, what should be the intro movie is pink and green horizontal lines :o Solved the problem when I remembered reading on here just to remove the intro file from the hard drive.

But I'd like to know if this is a common problem and if it affects any other movies in the game, or just 'as it says on the tin', the intro?

The intro should be clear without any lines or "bad graphics". In any case you can run the game by deleting the videos. Other than that you should have no problems with the game, as there are no other "movies" into it.

No, not a common problem, but a sure hint your graphics card is struggling :hmm:

On a different note, do you think that my system is adequate for running GWX or should I consider another mod like NYGM?

Pentium 4, 1GB RAM, 2.8GHZ, NVidia Geforce 6200

Give it a go....suck it and see ;)

If you have a graphics/fps issue whilst in port, enable the 'Lite Harbour Traffic' mod

With regard to the Intro file - both the Logo and Mission movie files, when I double click them in the folder, they open in Media Player and play fine. Anyone know why they don't run for me when starting the game by shortcut?

I realise it's not necessary for gameplay, it's just annoying! LOL

I'm now addressing the memory situation, mentioned earlier in the thread. I need some help with that though. I'm not a TOTAL fool with computers but I'm not fully conversant either! LOL

At the moment I have - DDR3, 512mb x 2, 166mhz, pc2700.

I'd like to upgrade to 2gb (that's the maximum the system supports anyway). My questions are - on Ebay, DDR is quoted as SDRAM or II SDRAM; which one do I want (my system says I have DDR3)?? Which PC standard do I want, does it matter? Is it OK to put higher MHZ memory in?

Hope that makes enough sense for someone to help me. Happy to provide any important informationthatI've left out.

Thanks, Gavin.
