Any of you folks got an old junker PC and wonder what to do with it?
Took an old crappy 2Ghz Dell box, stuck two [2] 250 gig hard drives in it. Stuck a crappy AGP video card in it. Junked the 512 meg RAM, and stuck 1 gig in it for a grand total of 1.5 gig ram in the server box. Made sure the thing had a DVD drive in it. Made the primary boot device the DVD drive. Stuck the DVD-OEM version of Microsoft Home Server Edition [10 users/PCs] and 56 minutes later after the format and install WOW!!!!!!
Total investment right now is under $300.
WOW ... and AWESOME! it is so ......... cool!
Ease of setup - AWESOME!
Backup program for all the PCs in your house AWESOME!
Speed of the backup - AWESOME!
Sharing files - AWESOME!
Setting up shared printers - AWESOME!
Publishing your own WEB site with no $money$ spent - AWESOME!
Published the home sever on the Internet and had the spouse 10 miles away accessing her own files in minutes of the install. AWESOME!
More experimenting to follow. Might need some help from you someday.
It is so DAMN EASY!
Look into it for your own family/setup - assuming you have an old junker laying around.

I don't play games too often anymore since I got this. I have been working on this (setting up a WHS - Windows Home Server). Here is MY server:
https://learnabit.homeserver.com/home/
It is in the >VERY< rough draft mode. IF you click on Learn A Bit's place on the right - you will get my WEB site.
http://learnabit.homeserver.com
or
www.learnabit.net (http://www.learnabit.net)
The [HOME] button [LINKS] button and [CONTACT US] button are working. The rest of it is in the crapper. The entire thing is in my house, spent no $Money$ and can host pictures, videos, music, etc. and it feels GOOD to be independent of other hosting sites.
The "server" resides in my house, in my utility room that has the furnace/air conditioning unit next to it. It resides 4 feet off the floor. It has no monitor, it has no keyboard, it has no mouse on it. All "controls" are from my PC, spouse's PC, or my laptop. The thing is way fxcking cool.
Wiped out my SH-3/SH-4 gaming rig hard drive by design via FDISK this past Saturday. Booted off the CD labeled PC Emergency Restore that comes with WHS. Restored my PC back to its original state in about 75 minutes. No hassles - NONE! And NEVER asked me for any other CD/DVD to re-install something.
500 Gigabytes available for any of you. Send me a PM for details if you want to wash your hands of Image Shack and those turds with their crappy limits and speeds for hosting a picture or video.
It would be a high honor to host something for you.
This product is HOT! Like your women.

Sounds good, i've been trying to get a old PC working the last two days, [[ intel 2ghz, 512ram, Radeon 9600XT 128ram OS Windows Media Centre running on a 40g hdd ]]
i was thinking when i do get it up what should i use it for more just tinkering with it at the moment, just read about this WHS i might convert it into a home server would need larger drives tho:hmm:.
Im stuck with the loading up, i get two long beeps im not sure if this is the ram or the video card i have replaced both and still get the long beeps, she was working for a couple of hrs then it crashed so i reboot & ever since all i get is two long beeps and no monitor display :damn: Its a PhoenixBios.

Sir, if you are getting "BEEPS" at boot up you have a MAJOR problem that needs fixing first! "BEEPS" at BIOS startup are BAD!. You need to fix that to be perfect, first. Then, and only then, contemplate installing WHS.
WARNING!
The hard drives in your spare PC are going to get a total wipe out of ANY data on them!
Forgot to mention this:
Once you do have it working, the backups can be kept for 3 MONTHS!. Also, when it "sees" multiple files dupicated accros several machines, it only backs it up ONCE and indexes it for restoration to the correct PC. So if you have music or pictures duplicated accross several machines it only backs up the file once!
KEY point:
Server does NOT need some fancy video card, does NOT need an audio card. does NOT need any big butt RAM - it only needs 512 meg of RAM.
I have an older desktop for this purpose. It has both Win98 and XP installed on it and has twin hard drives, it's actually still on the wired network at the moment, as I only switched to wireless networking the other day so that the laptops we have could go online, so I've not got around to putting something in that one for it to receive stuff wirelessly.
It's handy as a large back up device and it's also good in a pinch if the main desktop goes down or your keyboard explodes or whatever, as it does have a reasonably decent AGP graphics card in it and a fairly okay processor at 2.8 Ghz. Also handy to run older programs that will not run on XP if you boot it up in Win98. The one thing to be aware of is that if you do stuff like that, it is likely to be a weak link in your anti-virus chain, so watch out for that. Other than that minor caveat, I'd recommend doing that sort of thing to anyone, as if you get a main PC meltdown and you don't have a laptop, it's a good backup system while you sort out your normal use PC.
@ Kiwi: Your motherboard handbook (if you can find it) should tell you in the front few pages what the beep sequence signifies. Normally it is not a good sign, but it may just be a loose connection or something as simple as the battery telling you it's on its last legs (a not uncommon problem when reviving old banger PCs). If it won't crank up on the default BIOS settings, it could mean it's breathed its last, as a last resort a BIOS reflash might work. In rare cases, a virus can reconfigure the BIOS, so be careful before you pop it on a network to your good stuff.

Those beeps are ok, its when you get long beeps eg beeeeeeeeeeeeeep.....few seconds go by... beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep THATS when your got problems:)
Anyways i found the problem its the ram thanks to Chock i checked the manual and it states PC accepts 200/266 ram. The PC had 333 ram so i insert a 184pin of 266 ram and the beeeeeeeeeeeeeep was no more!

:) I had a home webserver, we used to run the original Wolfpack League scoring system on it, until my ISP shut it off. Like you said, it was not a up-to-date PC, and it had a limited number of connections (I thought mine was 50...:hmm: ) but it was neat to host a WWW website and Access database from my office. Yeah, that's a pretty cool experience.

Back on topic ..... here is a one minute video on what and how HP is going to market it. Saw some pictures of it. It is about 14" inches in diameter, yea a round computer box, about 9 inches tall. Only Ports on it are power, network card 1-gig, and 6 USB ports. That's it. no video, keyboard, or mouse ports. The video you are watching resides on my Home Server.

Well, I got the web site done on our Windows Home Server - that is WHY I am not around too much and gaming in SH3 and/or SH4 is on hold. (Oops forget Shells of Fury, too. I am working my way through the training missions - looks like a real FUN game.)
Here it is:
www.LearnABit.net (http://www.LearnABit.net)
Not bad for my FIRST try, ever, in my life! And, not bad for an old girl of 54? And it was so easy once I understood how all the "things" interact.
I welcome your comments and/or criticism from anyone. Either way - good or bad, your comments will help me in the long run.
Thanks for looking at it, and Thank You for your time, too!
I have 21 customers out of a pool of 1,000+ signed up to get a Windows Home Server - things are starting to look good after a 2 year slump of going down the drain (our business).
p.s.:
I can use some help getting one of those counters to work on how many people visited the site. I have spent hours trying to get it to work and have gotten NO WHERE.
Is the lettering on your caps lock fading away yet?
Yea, sorry about that - it was the Wow! effect. :)

Just figured out something REAL COOL you can do with the Windows Home Server using the Whiist add-in. Whiist is a Windows Home Server Add-In that allows you to create and manage UNLIMITED websites on your WHS - Windows Home Server.
So I created one called "photos" in a folder called websites. Copied and pasted the three folders I wanted to share with you.
No more b.s. posts of " Nude_Photo_of_PV_at_subsim.jpg " and all that jazz. I just give YOU this link:
http://learnabit.homeserver.com/photos
And you get to look at each picture. This is going to be a life saver of no more emails with photo attachment b.s. to friends/family.
- Kitchen Roof Leak
Photos of me riping apart our kitchen ceiling to remove the damaged drywall from a BAD roof leak. Did this in August, 2007. Took a week on and off.
- Laundry Room Project
Had the water pipe that goes through this room that feeds the rear yard outside water faucet freeze and burst last winter. Took a hammer and busted open the wall to fix the pipe and shutoff. Fixed the pipe and replaced the "so called" frost free shut off valve. Then said - to hell with and junked the entire room - EVERYTHING - even the appliances. If you look hard enough, you can see the CRAPPY JOB I did on those shut off valves up in the 1st floor rafters. I scorched them pretty good with the torch. :)

Here are some details on its neat file corruption feature:
Windows Home Server glitch corrupts user files
By Justin Mann, TechSpot.com
Published: December 27, 2007, 1:39 PM EST
A flaw discovered in the recently-released Windows Home Server earns a big whoops, in which user data is at risk for corruption (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9054178). Microsoft has warned users that editing files stored on a Windows Home Server and then saving them could result in corruption, ranging from Office documents to Quicken files, pictures, torrents and more.
The problem, Microsoft says, is a flaw inside Windows Home Server's shared folders. That's a tough break for anyone using the suite as a backup solution, though Microsoft is currently working on a fix and likely with one of this severe of a nature it will be part of the next patch cycle (We hope). There aren't any workarounds mentioned at this time.
In the meantime, if you are using Windows Home Server, be careful of editing files “on the fly” across your network – and always, always keep a backup. Then again, that's what WHS was intending to do in the first place – give you a backup.http://www.techspot.com/news/28383-windows-home-server-glitch-corrupts-user-files.html

Windows Home Server bug corrupts files (http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/27/windows-home-server-bug-corrupts-files/)
You fell for this b.s. from the press too , egh?
Yes, it's a set back, but...
Yea, I saw this posted a week ago or so. I have ditched that problem by deciding to use WHS for:
1. Backup of all PC's in the house - runs like a champ!
2. All My files/Spouse's files reside locally on our PC's/laptops and get edited/created there on the individual local PC.
3. I created a DOS batch file [any one remember those let alone write one? ;-) ] to dump a spare copy of our My Docs folders onto the server. Later added it to the Task Scheduler to automate the process once a day. I never edit them, never plan to edit ANY file off the server.
4. With Folder Duplication automatically turned on the server a THIRD copy of any document/file/folder is put on the External USB hard drive on the server.
I decided from day one that I am >NOT< going to trust Microsoft and relocate all my data to reside on the server. A copy or two or three of my data/files/folders - Yes, I trust it.
So if you are using WHS for backup and web site hosting, this article is like yelling "fire" in a theatre.
You should spend more time here before making any further negative posts about WHS since you don't own/use it:

This is an easy process that anyone could search on the net for and implement. If you would have Windows 2003 or 2000 server and apply the batch file to the group or individual policy, things would happen automatically during user logon.
I might suggest that as a computer company, that you ditch the aol email account and use the email addy provided to you by your ISP...companies will take you more seriously.
Lastly, with your website, you've got one item that catches my attention regarding your menu. A simple HTML programming issue of your 'services' link is always highlighted.

By the way, I wasn't here to flame you, just warn you. And you shouldn't need to make backups of backups of backups just to be safe from file corruption last time I checked! Only people with a server problem or people with a paranoia problem need to do this! :rotfl:
I'm just giving you a hard time by the way. I'm glad you like WHS, but I can't resist!

PS. A server should be able to do anything you require of it for managing data. I'd seriously look at Small Biz Server from MS, or Linux as alternatives if you want a quick fix.

As for your website, I might suggest looking at Joomla! (www.joomla.org/)

Well maybe BS was a bit too strong. I get upset with what seems every Tom, Dick, and Harry and their non-stop bashing of Microsoft. True they are a massive giant. The Internet "press" stories have blown this way out of porportion - some stories read like it is "the end of world is happening and it is Microsoft's fault".
Turns out that you MIGHT have this problem IF you have MULTIPLE INTERNAL hard drives in the server box. IF you are running running a SINGLE internal hard drive, the problem (data file corruption) does NOT happen. I have a SINGLE hard drive - 500 gig and an external 500-gig USB drive for folder duplication. More news came out this week that it looks like the ONLY manufacturer that FOR SURE has this problem is HP. Seems their [HP's] new SmartMedia Box (with Windows Home Server running it) can also have Internet "press" stories yelling "the end is near - your data is screwed". Yet there is no such story from the press. Furthermore, HP published a 6-7 paragraph notice or warning customers and now it looks like a combination of software and certain HP hardware has certain people at HP with egg on their face. No one mentions that HP re-tracted the 6-7 paragraph original document warning and replaced it with a vague one paragraph notice. So where is the negative comments against HP, Egh? ............ I digress ..... some marbles got lost in that rant.
So sorry about that bubba - the torch :p ... Anyway:
In the last week I finally got through the thick skull of mine how to do the video, music, and picture streaming from the server to all the PCs. Man is it easy once you find the right add-on to do it. I am starting the slow process of ripping our DVD collection on to the server - we only have one DVD player in the house hooked up to a TV tube, so this is going to make life MUCH nicer. First one I ripped was of course Das Boot. I am currently back ordered at the local libray to get Run Silent Run Deep.
My offer still stands to anyone here. If we can get on to a common Team Speak Server it eliminates the need for us to use a phone/cell phone. I will give you a grand tour of this GREAT product by giving you the keys to the house - the Admin account and password. You can then see it first hand before you take the plunge.
I am convinced that for 2008 that this product will end up being the sleeping giant that almost everyone will want to have in their house assuming two or more PCS.
Hopefully will hear from someone here someday - take care - good hunting in SH3 or SH4!

Hey you nerds!
I had a minor "burp" on my home server. Upgraded all PC's from 100 meg/sec to 1-gig network cards including the server. First 1-gig NIC from Netgear totally f-d up my Server, then my XP gaming rig, then my spouse's Vista PC. Took the Netgear CRAP back and got all LinkSys 1-gig cards and ALL machines worked perfectly on the first try.
Here is a revised link on why I am not around too much. Try this:
http://learnabit.homeserver.com/MikePhotos (http://learnabit.homeserver.com/MikePhotos)
Look for a folder called Laundry room project. Started it in August 2007 and I just finished it up this past Sunday. It's DONE! Man is so nice!
Next go to the folder called Kitchen Roof leak.
http://learnabit.homeserver.com/MikePhotos (http://learnabit.homeserver.com/MikePhotos)
Look at those photos. That was a killer. It had to be PERFECT for the restoration. Took me forever to achieve Perfection. Our kitchen is a MAIN show piece in our home. Wanted no drywall bumps or blobs showing after I painted. Mission accomplished.
Like that? Remember the driving force here is NOT what I did but to show you what a Windows Home Server can do for YOU!
My SHIV Screen shots = 350+ give or take
http://learnabit.homeserver.com/sh4 (http://learnabit.homeserver.com/sh4)
When i get PO'd at that game, I revert to SHIII with the GWX 2.0 mod to calm me down, about 40 screen shots:
http://learnabit.homeserver.com/sh3 (http://learnabit.homeserver.com/sh3)
Pretty cool, egh? Not the games or screen shots, but the ability to share with friends tons of stuff via a Windows Home Server. It is SO DAMN EASY - once you understand HOW it works. http://www.dontcamp.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif
Everything you have looked at or done is on a JUNK Dell 1.4 Ghz PC Pentuim 4 PC with 512-meg RAM sitting in my furnace room. It has NO monitor, NO Video card, NO keyboard, NO mouse, NO sound card in or attached to it. That junk PC hosted this stuff, 1 foot off the floor in case the sump pump fails.
I hope and pray you enjoyed your visit to my Windows Home Server links.
Now get off your butt and setup a Windows Home Server in YOUR house.

Thank You for the phone call and wealth of information. As mentioned, I bought a TonidoPlug home server a few months ago. It works great and comes with a ton of apps for $100 but is slow on serving up pictures. I will now read carefully all the info you sent and get a WHS going on a spare computer........

I just got off the phone with Ships 'R Us
Here's a copy of my PM response making sure a privacy issue is not breached.
Send me your email address ASAP !!!
I have a detailed response to your questions about the Windows Home Server.
These damn PM's have a 1,000 character limit and mine is more than that.
Thanks a lot..... xxx@wavecable.com (xxx@wavecable.com)
I am willing to even telephone you or me.....I am old and retired and want this for my children on the east coast......I want to log access and login info also........I guess there are addons for it. Thank you very much sir......... Mr. Ships "r Us XXXXX (xxx)xxx-xxxx
Mr. Ships 'R Us nice talking after our long phone call. Digest the email I sent you because it answers all your questions.
Nice talking with you and looking forward to enjoyable friendship, MATE.
And Thank you SubSim. It feels real good to help someone with something that will EXACTLY give him and his family many hours of family enjoyment and sharing - THREE YEARS later.
BTW - your limit of 1,000 characters in a PM response SUCKS and having no ability to email the person instead SUCKS ROYAL. Furthermore it was a pain in the ass to track down Ships 'R Us and give a response in a reasonable amount of time. That SUCKED more than anything else.
But we got through it via PM's and a phone call.
All is well, but a pain in the testicles [saggy ones at that].

When you get old like me and Ships 'R Us, you go out of your way to protect your nuts. It hurts too much if you don't. :O:
I bought a nut bra - worth every penny.
I can sell you one for $100.00 PLUS shipping.
Hey - one decent job and a biz license and you have yourself an Action Pack. Cancel it after the first year if you must (I keep mine going indefintiely). You still keep the SW, though you can't sell it. You might wind up in a nasty lawsuit if you did try to sell it.
-S
Tech-net is about half the cost, I have the plus subscription and can DL all the OS's they have also, plus apps.

Curious why your WHS has Visa ads on it?

I don't understand that part. It's nothing I did.

This is only an informational post to publically thank Lewinsky for helping me through the set up process of in getting my server up and running Windows Server 2003 on a headless old computer I had hanging around.
There has been no posting reference this subject in 2 years. I want to add that it is so easy to host your own stuff without paying someone to do it as well as pay to have a website built. WHS2003 lets you compile your own website with add-ins. All communications to and from the server are SSL on port 443 and you are issued a free security certificate. All communications can not be viewed by a man-in-the- middle.
My old box is an ASUS MB with two 1000Mhz processors and 750Mb ram. It serves out at about 500kbs and with three people downloading large files at the same time the processor is not overworking at all.
The server has only two things attatched, a power cord and a cat5 cable. Everything is controlled by a local computer or a remote computer, as Monica took control of everything from Illinois and I watched it all on my monitor. Here is The Motherboard: When the large picture comes in, just click on it to zoom in. This Whiist is an add in for hosting pictures on WHS2003. https://dougscabin.homeserver.com (https://dougscabin.homeserver.com/The_Server/)
I also run one of those new cloud computers, a TonidoPlug that cost $99.00. It does a lot and performs well at serving, in a box the size of a pack of smokes with a dozen built in apps, but nothing compared to WHS2003 capabilities, although it only draws 7 watts and plugs directly into an outlet. My server is set to go standby after 30 min of no activity, but wakes up within 15 sec if called on, and auto boots back if power fails.
I am writing this to let anyone considering taking the plunge, it is well worth it. The learning curve is pretty basic. ON MY OWN and before ever talking to Monica I had it up and running from scratch in 4 hours. I just put in the DVD and Microsoft did the rest.
Because I host and serve the pictures of the server, I did not have to go to photobucket or someplace else where other people can snoop my data. With a server, you are the sole owner and possessor of your stuff just like uncle Neal is of his stuff that he hosts and controls for us here.
For the benefit of those that want to keep track of what went on, the server logs all logins, successful and failed, what IP address looked at what, when and for how long and when and what may have been downloaded and uploaded. People that login are assigned priviledges on the site according to individual set permissions. Some can look, some can look and upload while others can look, upload or download whatever you have allowed that user to do. You also can change the name of the site in about 15 seconds. NEAL can tell you all the capabilities of a server. They are extremely smart beings. I am a novice and pass along this to others seeking information on this subject. MONICA is the grand wizard or NEAL is or both are.
I am also giving you a link to a forum called "We got Served", a good forum for anything on this subject. http://forum.wegotserved.com/ (http://forum.wegotserved.com/)
In Closing, Monica has had a WHS 2003 server going since Bill Gates came out with it and tells me he has never known of a WHS 2003 server being hacked. That statement is not an invitation either and respect you all will abide and not put me to the test. It could be a nightmare, but the link above is not a direct highway in.........Thank you for allowing me to tought WHS 2003 and Monica here.....You guys and gals got lots of stuff from SH3,4,5, and whatever else you could be hosting whhile having a ball.

There are other small compact home servers on the market. One which I also own is a TonidoPlug, a "cloud computer" in the true sense of the word. It comes with a dozen buikt in apps and is the size of a package of cigarettes, plugs directly into a wall outlet with no power cord, runs a 1.2Ghz processor, 512Mb ram on a Linux Ubuntu OS. It has only a usb connection for your drives and a cat5 connector.
Take your smart phone and upload, download, serve the world anything, comes with Money, Thots, Jukebox, and about nine other apps. It has a built in email server, samba and ftp server. In a nutshell it does everything for you while on the go. It draws about 9 watts of power, equivelent to a night light and costs less than $15/yr to run 24/7. No more is the need to leave your computer on while on the go as TonidoPlug handles all apps as well as printing tasks.
Download Torrents with your phone and upload to Tonido and when you get home, its all waiting for you. CodeLathe, the makers of TonidoPlug is the only established manufacturer of cloud computers with built in apps. Buy another brand, program it yourself from scratch with Linux apps.
You also get your own domain name and SSL encrypted communications with a security certificate..........All this only $99........Unbelieveable.

If anyone out there is into restoring Old John Deere Garden Tractors from the 1960's here are a few of the most sought after that I have redone. The one I put dual wheels on will bury the 12" bottom plow attatched. It is powered by a 12hp. Kohler.........
A real working link to them from my own Windows Home Server.
