SENATE OVERRIDES BUSH'S WATER BILL VETO:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/11/08/congress.water/index.html

"Bush spiked the measure Friday despite its overwhelming bipartisan support, calling it too costly and complaining that the 900 projects it authorized would overtax the Army Corps of Engineers."

I think Dubb-Ya should re-assess his concept of "too costly".

Sen. Barbara Boxer, a Democrat from California who was responsible for shepherding the bill through the Senate, said the Senate was sending the president a message:
"You should respect the Senate, the House, the Congress and American people because we are elected, too," Boxer said. "We are close to the people. We know what their needs are."

You tell 'em Barbara...

Gee, they trash him for not vetoing then they trash him for vetoing...

Boxer sure does seem to know "the people's needs" all right. That's a bit of the pot calling the kettle black.

That bill was pathetic - full of special interest. I ticks me off I have to pay for those projects when they are just going to have a catastrophy again.

Only problem is, when you want to get re-elected in this country, you spend money. THat is all this bill is doing. Hard to tell your consituents to back off spending when its in their own back yard.

What a waste. Bush was right to veto this damn bill. Besides, who is going to build it? The Army Corps of Eng's are backlogged with over 50 projects! Way to make it worse!

Id be more sympathetic to bush if he didnt try to get those rattletrap mexican truckers full access to our highways. That incident alone said loudly where his priorities are, his special interest. Lame duck or not, hes only looking after his own at this point. Looking back, if his name wasn't "Bush", i don't think he'd have gotten as far as he has. Riding on the coat tails of his fathers name, and his legacy as president and VP during the regan years.

Well, I'm glad to see it got through anyway for two reasons: First it showed bi-partisan support. First time in a LONG time that I've seen both parties get together and support an effort instead of trying to rip each other's throats out (politically speaking).

Secondly, I'm happy to see some of my tax $$$ going to projects that will *eventually* benefit Americans... Month after month the "Iraqi Bottomless Pit" get fed billions in US $$$....

Corp of Engineers problem? Train and employ more engineers and construction people. Good for the economy...

The military acutally has ALOT of engineers, trouble is, they're all deployed. Little known fact, is that all military engineering is subjected to the army Corp of engineers standards or approval. Even in the AF, its not uncommon to see a blueprint with the little corp of engineers symbol (castle) located somewhere on the print.

And yeah, we SERIOUSLY need to start spending more at home, and less on other peoples problems (or causing them as the case in Iraq may be). I wonder how much our goverment spends on our own people as compaired to how much is poured into international venues.

Uhh, last time I checked over 8 trillion dollars spent on the "war on poverty" here in this country since LBJ was president and yet people who the money is supposed to help still don't work and depend on the government for their monthly check.

How many billion could it save not buying this project? It's again rediculous. This is the last time I want to hear that we can't afford some new weapon for our defense for a billion dollars when we go and blow money like this. THis is crazy.

Bi-partisan or not, we can't afford this kind of crap! At some point, there will be no more benefit to our children as mentioned above because there will be no more country!

I was thinking of annual costs, not fun with statistics to support ones view. It was an honest question really, but suffice to say, i feel initiating hostitlies over there was a mistake, subsequently, the money spent over there is a waste that could have been avoided. Money that could have been spent to better OUR OWN country, not some 3rd world hellhole. Furthermore, i feel Bush is a crock of **** that stinks. Not that congress smells any better, but Bush has spewed his cocknbull crap alot longer.

Notice i italized I feel. Aruging over how someone feels about a situation is very silly. So if you want a debate (as this forum is prone to do), im telling you now, im not the opponent your looking for.

If the government has a deficit, that is a good thing. Not a massive deficit but debt should encourage government to control it's spending. This government does not. It's not just Bush, it is both the Dems and the Republicans in congress. The Republicans lost in 2006 because of it as their own people stayed at home and the Dems in control now are even worse.

Also, if the government does have a surplus then it has taxed it's citizens too hard and it should give the money back.

Just curious, where did you get that number, 8 Trillion? I'm not sure we have ever spent 8 Trillion on anything.
