Everytime I fire a torpedo with or without the periscope as soon as the torpedo leaves the tub they go 90 degrees to the left I must be missing something here everything appears to be set correctly fired one the other night just for fun and it went straight.

Is your position keeper on?

Do you have manual targeting on? What targeting procedures are you using? See WernerSobe's thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118923, and go back over your steps if you're running manual targeting.

position keeper must have been on as I reset the depth dial ? Maybe theres a wino in the forward torpedo room maybe those were empty bottles instead of torpedos.

Its pretty easy to have the position keeper locked on to a 'previous' target.
Depth/speed/spread angle have nothing to do with positon keeper.
Perhaps check some of the guides at the top of these fourms for... well ... guidance ;)

Thanks for the help I will give that a try that is probably the problem as I have not played this one very much and it is quite a bit different than SH3.

Well Heir Kapitan should quit throwing empty bottles in the launching tubes, got them shooting straight now for what ever reason it stayed locked on a previous shot I don't remember which shot it was......the Capt'n Morgans or Sky.

I am new to SH4. Is there a simple explanation of the "Position Keeper"? I am Not ready to do manual targeting....I just want to do the simpler Point and Shoot with the periscpe along with the spread/depth/speed options/functions for now. I'm not understanding the position keeper function, though, and have also had some torps going off wildly in the wrong direction. I'm sure I am overlooking something very basic that is somewhere in the SH4 Manual.

The following is a very basic method but will get you started but I highly recommend watching one of the tutorials and learning more.
1. Use periscope and 'lock' on target (click on the "A" in the top middle of your torpedo tube indicator)
2. Open the Position Keeper (PK) on the left side of the periscope screen.
3. Use the ship identification manual to identify the ship, click on the checkmark in the book and you'll see the name of the ship appear at the top of the PK.
4. Adjust AoB, range, speed on the TDC on the right of your periscope screen etc
5. Open tube(s), adjust torpedo settings in PK if required.
Fire when ready.
NOTE: if you change targets to another ship, you MUST 'unlock' the PK by clicking on the indicator light on the PK a couple of times otherwise it will remain tracking the previous target even if you are looking at another target and lock it with the TDC. This will result in your torpedoes going in a completely unwanted direction.
Hope this helps. I'm sure one of the experts here will give you more detailed advice.
