I'm on my 14th patrol out of Kiel in the Type II-D boat.
I was ordered to BF47 which is west of the Brest, France u-boat base.
I thought.."I'm not going through that damned "ENGLISH" Channel again" so I started for an area above Scapa Flow. All of a sudden***boing!*** it dawned on me that We were being transferred to Brest, France.
I am now just 233km NNE of Scapa Flow with two torps left and slinking away from two DD's who are trying to ruin my day.

I have been playing with the speed settings for best fuel endurance and I believe I can make the whole trip by going around to the west of Ireland if I hold my speeds at 5-6 knots on the surface & 2-3 knots when submerged. It is going to be one long trip though. The maximum for this boat food wise was around 30 days.

It is now December 15, 1940 & I left Kiel on December 5th.

Think I'll make it?

Not been in a Type II for ages so not sure what their range is. But lets say Kiel to Brest is around 3,000 kilometres give or take via the north of Scotland, I would say yes you should be able to do it. My advice though is once your stationed at Brest, if you have sufficient renown, is to upgrade to a type VII as the Type II is not really suited to Atlantic patrols.

Yes, I think you can make it.
But I think you will be a bit early:yep:
I take it you are in the 1īst Flotilla, and they moved to Brest in 6/41 if I remember this right.

Be sure to stow a sail, some oars and a few fishing poles. :arrgh!:

I roughly measured out the route at 4961km.
So far the seas have been fairly good, but you know how that can change in a heart beat.
I have the CE brewing some hot rocket juice to pore into the fuel tanks & the cook has caught two Atlantic Salmon while trolling, that will help streach the food supply.

So far I have been at this over 16 real time hours because I have spent a lot of cat and mouse hide and seek with those damn DD's. Just because I sunk the last two in a line of 6 they seem to be a bit upset...

There are a lot of DD's on this route & I am always going down and away from them to keep from being detected.
I only have 3 torps left and I want to save those for a large cargo or tanker if possible.

You better or I will set Bernard II on to you and he is not like the old Bernard. :arrgh!:

20 day left of food supply? Hm better Start limiting the rations now, don't care to shoot your torps now, there will be plenty targets until you reach brest...

Last option to empty the tubes will be those destroyers in BF12, but there should be some more rewarding targets on the way there.

It just depend on your current fuel situation. I would not worry if you still have 50% or more at your disposal..

ha ha...naaa S.S., I don't think I'll really need to. I'm closing in on half way & I still have 3/4 tanks left. I just burned up a bunch getting within reach of a large tanker though. I hit him in the ass & he finely came to a stop in about 7-8km & is starting to take water over the side. This dang GWX just doesn't give much enjoyment when you hit a big ol fuel laden tanker right in the engine/fuel tanks. No big "BOOM!" or burn...just a little "poof" some dude yells "Yeaaa" and that's it for another 30 minutes or so.

I lightened the load by one less torpedo. I don't really know if that makes any difference in this sim or not though. In reality I believe it would.

My thinking is to get rid of the torps sooner rather then later. Less weight for those props to push is my thinken..

I spent a big part of my life flying in Alaska so I am very fuel consious by nature.

Somebody with more naval experience than me can correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was common practice in order to maintain proper list, trim, draft, balance, and stability to ship seawater into the sub's tanks for every torpedo fired as well as food stuffs and fuel consumed. Odds are your sub is every bit as heavy for the props and engines to push through the water with all the torpedoes expended. :hmm:

That is correct. A submarine only varies in the setting of how much is looking out of the water. And this is done by putting more or less water in special tanks.
A captain can choose between
* totally submerged
* deep in water / decks awash
* normal stabilized surface level
* high out of the water / but totally unstable in sea

If you get yourself some type II or VII plans from this forum you can find "Ballast Tank" written on them. These are the ones. There are a few more for other purposes like:
* Trimzellen (putting the uboat level in the water)
* Torpedoausgleichstank (compensate for the uplift immediately after a torpedoshot, so the bow does not breach the surface)
......

Hmmm, so what you guys are saying is that the boat will weigh the same throughout the whole patrol ..torpedos or no torpedos... because of ballast water...
Now that I think on it..I guess that would make sense. I hadn't thought of that.

Dang, I'm no sea dog. I'm an air dog...

Well, I made it to Brest just fine. I left Wilhelmshaven on Dec 5th 1940 and arrived in Brest on Jan 3th 1941. I still had enough gas to maybe get to Wilhelmshaven via the ENGLISH channel, but not to Kiel where they ordered me to end up.

With my 6 torpedos I had ***1 miss, 1 dud, and I sunk: two DD's, 1 T3 Tanker and a pesky damn Tramp steamer that just wouldn't go down..I hit it in the fuel tank & it was burning all over but just kept going 8 kts, (down from 9 kts) until I chased it down & blasted it with just about every shot I had for that worthless pice-of-crap pop gun on the IID. I blew everything up on deck & shot 500 times in one spot at the waterline & it finely blewup & sunk.

However, like LZS VON SWE said: "I think your to early for Brest" he was right!

I docked in Brest to get fuel and six more torps and some more spam..."I love spam" and they kicked us out of Brest on the 4th of Jan 1941..
Man what a bummer...29 stinking days on that stinking boat and they wouldn't even let us take a shower.

Now I am wondering.. If I go the long route back & sink any ships would they count count in my total as another patrol.
The patrol just says "NULL" so can I fight my way home or do I have to go by the shortest most direct route to complete my 14th patrol?
The commander is calling me "at sea in 15th patrol". so perhaps I have credit for the sinkings & time as patrol #14 & now it will just move on.

Go ahead and sink some more ships, you will still get the renown but you won't get any renown for patrolling your assigned grid for 24 hours because you haven't been assigned a grid. This will count as a separate patrol.
