Hi all....

Long time sub simmer here. Started out on Silent Service I back in '89. Moved up to Silent Service II and then Aces of the Deep. After a 10 year hiatus, I'm back after purchasing SH3.

I really enjoyed my time at the German Naval Academy. Graduated with a 4.0 (scored "excellent" on all five lessons). Now it's time to take command of my own U-boat.

I have a question....two questions actually. Which mods would you suggest? I'm referring to the non-super mod variety. I already tried GWX 1.03 and found out I just don't have enough computing power nor the right grapihics card to make that particular mod work so I'm looking at some of the "smalller" speciality mods. And, can I add mods once I've started a patrol; i.e can a saved patrol be modded?

Thanks for your replies. I have found this forum to be an excellent source of info, tips, etc. I really appreciate the work and time the moderators have put in and those forum members that always seem to have helpful friendly advice.

Good hunting to all....and thanks again. What a great forum!

Welcome to subsim! Herr Kaluen! :arrgh!:

Dont give up on GWX just yet, their are serveral mods availble for it (I believe 2 of the good ones come with the package) that reduce the computer loads on things to make it easier for older machines.

For example: the Lite harbour traffic mod kills all friendly harbour traffic, therefore increaseing frame rates and leaveing more CPU power for your patrol so its alot easier on your game.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Even though you can't run GWX, you might be able to run NYGM since it is somewhat less graphics intensive.

can I add mods once I've started a patrol; i.e can a saved patrol be modded?

I think after you apply a mod you can usually load a saved game that's saved in the harbor after or before a patrol, but not while you're at sea. Even then it's not 100% risk free as for example some mods tend to change things with the crew etc and that might cause some glitches.

Welcome aboard Kaleun alfresco :arrgh!:

Only add a mod when your in port and have performed a 'rollback' (if using SH3 Commander)

Aye never add a mod while on patrol
Not worth losing that patrol - wait till back in port

As previously posted you can try NYGM or WAC if your system struggles with GWX

There are plenty of other mods around you can use just for stock too
Needs a bit of searching around though

Welcome aboard

Hey, welcome aboard
I agree with Neptune #1,

let us know your system. There may be some other things afoot.
I have a mid-range computer( well a little lower that a mid-range) and GWX runs fine.
Geforce 6800Ultra

As a long-time player of stock SH3 (didn't want to give up on my career) here are a few non-super mods I've tried or used and would recommend, though I must also state that some of my mods are extracted from bigger mods (when I just wanted a little part I liked!):

MooseMeasure Accurate Ruler (plus some other nav map plotting tools)
Vertical Nomograph on map
Realistic Water (extracted from Real U-boat (RUb) 1.45)
Decks Awash and Type VII cable fix + water reflection fixes
Sergbuto's camera mod (mainly to freely move around the bridge/deck)
Racerboy's SH4 effects for SH3 (little heavier on the graphics, but not too bad)
OLC's GUI for 1.4b (not compatible with MooseMeasure above, or SB's camera mod), but I strongly recommend giving it a go
Darker screens & recognition manual (saves your nightvision during night attacks when playing in a dark room)
Racerboy's exhaust mod for the Type VII
Rubini's StayAlert Crew Fix (crew better at detecting distant visual/hydrophone contacts)Hope that's of some help to you. If you're struggling to find anything from the above that takes your fancy, do ask! I've had some of these for over 2 years now but will try to find where they came from if you want. The first mods I had weren't installed with JSGME (which is an essential program), so a bit harder to trace.

I've yet to try GWX, but expect it to tax my computer a little too much. I've played enough of stock now to want more from the game, so maybe this weekend is the time to jump in.

Anyway, welcome aboard, and good hunting

As already stated, do try the Lite Harbour Traffic modlet which comes with GWX. :yep:

As previously posted you can try NYGM or WAC if your system struggles with GWX

Maybe it's just my machine or something, but I found WAC to be way worse than GWX in terms of frame rates and such... so I'd say if you can't run GWX, you probably can't run WAC either.

OLC's GUI for 1.4b (not compatible with MooseMeasure above, or SB's camera mod), but I strongly recommend giving it a go

If you want to run SB's camera mod with my GUI, Jhereg has made a version of SB's camera mod which is compatible with it. A quick search on the mods forum should find it for you

The bad news is there are literally hundreds of single mods out there, changing almost everything. My own setup has more than 40, and I'm one of the lazy ones.

Have a look here, and you'll see all of them in the SH3 sections. Those of us who use them will be glad to help with explanations, but the best thing really is to start saving some beans for enough power to run GWX.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and all the advice. Turm, I will probably take you up on your offer for info on those links to the mods you mentioned. OneLifeCrisis, thanks for the link you provided. I am presently considering the GUI mod list at the site after having viewed the tutorial.

Currently, I am on my first patrol...Sep 1, 1939. Sailing out Kiel toward the western approaches. This is all very cool.

To answer the question about my system....
HP Notebook
1.8 Ghz (but runs at 2.3 GHz)
1 GB ram
Stock video
So far I've added Moose nav tools, wave enahnacement, expanded gramamhone, and a milk cow mod (i hope to go to Aruba, and the US eastern seaboard in time for operation drumbeat in my VIIb).

Oh, another question comes to mind. Is there a way to get the convoy map from the milk cow mod integrated into the game?

Again...thanks to all of you and Good Hunting.

And thank you, Sailor Steve, for the link you provided. That list seems fairly thorough, altho, i wish there was a thumbnail description for each of those mods.

Good Hunting

Alfresco, It has to be rough on a stock notebook graphic card. Turm's list is great (probably because it looks a lot like mine) and I am loving, although it's like learning to walk again, the OLC GUI. Good luck.
