First I'd say to actually post your system specs and second have you installed the latest game patch 1.3? After you answer these, more people will be able to help out.

Patch to 1.3, defrag your disk and shut down any unnecessary windows programs.

The devil is in the omitted details of what graphics card you're using. Anything less than an nVidia 7600GT will not do very well at all. Much less and the game doesn't run at all.

so 256 mb isn't good enough?

what is the make and model of your card?

With that card I'd go with what TDK1044 said. When your done with the defrag patch to 1.3, restart and try the game again.

After you patch and reinstall, make sure that when you reinstall it, don't put it in "program files", make it a seperate folder. Also, right click your SH4 icon and run as administrator. That should take care of it.:arrgh!:

Keyword Vista....

I know there are some issues with vista something about accounts and such.

I dont know anything about them but have seen it discussed here before. Try searching or wait till someone who knows more than I do to ask about it.

I am running Vista and have yet to have any problems with it. Of course I turned off the administrative deal and turned off windows defender and the firewalls. Vista you have to give yourself permission do do anything.

Windows Defender causes trouble on XP too. I don't know how it affects SH4, but at least on my PC it doesn't work at all with Armed Assault. With Defender on, the game runs for 5-10 minutes, then CTD. Every time. Defender off, and it works like a charm.

Another thing to try, right click the SH4 icon, select properties then check the box: run this mode compatability.

I run Vista and haven't had alot of problems. Let us know how it is working as you should be able to play. Don't worry, we'll get it fixed.:sunny:

I've been playing on Vista as well, and other than using JSGME to install mods I have had no problems.

Try turning all graphics options off and playing at a lower resolution and see if the crash repros.

I use VISTA and NVIDIA GE Force 7300 LE and I didn't have any issues at all. The only problem I had was a graphic glitch, square flames, but it was due to a missing files. I put those files and voila problem solved. However, I have my game in a separate directory from the Program Files. I use compability files where I put my game and the MODS. I have a friend that he had similar problem with another game and the problem was in the PCI.

Don't forget To Reboot your PC after installing SH4. Good Luck.:arrgh!:

I was reading another thread in another forum about another game but...

Right click the game icon and select "Run as Administrator"... try that.

Never mind I see thats already been tried.

Have you tried using a unique directory for the game in lieu of the default /programfiles/games yadda yadda ?

Also have you cleaned up the registry after each un-install prior to the re-install ?

Not sure how to get to it in Vista, but right clicking on My Computer will give you access to Manage. In there you should be able to find Event Viewer. In Application you should be able to see the error that caused SHIV to crash. It might give you a clue where to look for a solution. Make sure you don't have any viruses or spies running on your machine especially during install. Don't defrag too often. You can wear out your HD. If your HD is starting to fail, you may continue to get a bad install or game load.

Clean the registry after an uninstall and BEFORE a re-install.

Dont forget to try a unique folder for the install instead of the default too.

Good luck.

The more I hear about Vista the more I like Windows 3.11! Sure am glad I'm running XP Media Center Edition and my Vista is safely on a shelf, waiting for prime time.

The thing is though, most of us have run SH4 on Vista with few if any problems. Got to be something causing this.:-?

Stijnvranken, have you downloaded the hotfixes for Nvidia/Microsoft yet?

Another thing to try is to turn down the resolution and uncheck most graphic settings.

I have an ATI x1950, and I find if I crank up the graphics too high I get periodic CTDs. They don't repro when I have the graphics turned down.
