View Full Version : Friendly Aircraft
Patrol Bismark Sea just N.W. of Raboul April 43, a large Task force consisting of 3 Battleships, 2 Heavy Cruisers with 3 Escorts clipping along at 16 knots. Radio Compac and was told forces would be dispatched, break off and RTB.Wasn't gonna pass up an opportunity since my Sboat has a full inventory of fish. Managed a good firing position 650 yards without being detected and waited for the two trailing Heavy Cruisers. Launched 3 fish into the first cruiser, all 3 fish hit, second Heavy Cruiser lauched 4th tube and scored a critical hit, she went down instantly while the first H.C, sat dead in the water with heavy list. Had 3 DD Escorts all over me when all of a sudden they broke off and started firing their guns. Next I can see the splashes of bombs being dropped near the dead Heavy Cruiser. Crap! their gonna sink my target, two H.C. gives you more tonnage then a single BB. Any how they missed and buggerd off. This is the first time have seen aircraft dispatched after reporting location of a task Force or Convoy.Wondering if anybody elese has seen this ? :arrgh!:

I've never seen it but some here have however, I was in the Bismark Sea and set up on a large TF and all of a sudden, guns go to blazing. I thought at first I had been detected but I seen a few of the ships catching fire. I then spun the periscope around and I saw a large US TF coming full steam. I plugged the Battleship with 4 fish and sit around as long as I could to watck the show. An American DD almost rammed me as I was at periscope depth. I did see 2 US carriers take damage but I drew the attention of 2 IJN DD's so I had to motor on out of there. Really cool to watch though. Thing that got me, even though it was at night, I expected to see some planes but never did.
Sweet, that's something worth watching, except for almost getting rammed by one of your own :D
When you are concerned that reporting a convoy might rob you of tonnage, keep close tabs on the radio reports of friendly task forces and don't report in when they are near enough to attack or send planes. I mark these locations and direction of travel on my map so may marks are still there when the contact icons fade. As an alternative, be ready to instantly start your attack before the friendlies arrive.

I saw it once off the coast of Norway after sinking 2 DD's in a convoy of 6 DD's. I was trying to stay away from the remaining four who were after my blood
When the aircraft showed up and started dropping bombs.
I had a perfect opportunity to sink two of them, but by the time I firured out what was going on the opportunity had passed.

I've yet to see something like this but I will be looking for it in the future. Sounds awesome.
Probly expect to see aircraft and TF intercepting mid war and on as US bases expand, :arrgh!:
