View Full Version : Storms?

I have heard that in Silent Hunter IV you can run in to powerful, powerful typhoons and have crew members wash overboard? What time of the year does one find these storms at? And has anyone ever actually sailed through one?

I'm not going to say for sure that never happens but I'm in cruise #13 of my career and have never seen such a thing. Haven't read of it on SUBSIM either so far. That would be great if it were a possiblilty. The bait's out. Let's see what turns up.

Never heard that before. I've been in many storms and no one got washed overboard. They stick it out to the extent that my deck guns crews are sometimes still manning the deck guns while submerged :o

I can't remember exactly where I read it, or heard it, but I do seem to recall seeing a video SOMEWHERE of a boat in the middle of a storm with the watch crew in their rain gear. And I remember reading SOMEWHERE that crew can be washed overboard. I've completed a couple of patrols already in the early war years. The Gato class submarine isn't bad...can't wait until I get assigned to the BALAO class submarine...now that right there is a submariners submarine.

It must have been a survivor from a downed aircraft. Post a screenshot if any of your crew goes overboard. It's a glitch, not a feature.
Oh, Welcome to Subsim! :D

What I meant was when I said a boat in the middle of a storm, I meant the submarine, not a couple of guys in a life raft paddling around (I think the storm would have sunk them!)

You got me thinking (took me awhile, at my age lol) and I seem to recall it used to be a glitch with SH3. It happened to me also, twice I think, in a type IIA. I was surfaced, watch at their station, and we ran into a storm. We got hit by a big wave and I recall two of my watchmen went missing, which I noticed about half an hour later. But like I said, haven't had this happen in SH4, and I've played over 10 careers now. I'd be curious to see if it's happenned to anyone.
The watch crew will get out their rain gear when it's raining but in SHIV there can be raging wind/waves and they will wear normal clothes unless it's raining. Spent lots of time in the sim. Never seen or heard of crew getting washed overboard although the sub can suffer deterioration in prolonged exposure according to the manual. No hard evidence what exact conditions actually make this happen. We'll know better how weather affects the crew after the next patch which fixes a game restore bug.

I'm satisfied with the way it is. Patch 1.4 will make me even more satisfied.

Love the sound of a raingear MOD - but what I REALLY want is to experience a major storm with BIG waves or the claimed typhooon in SH III or IV. As a retired mariner I often take a sub out just because I miss being at sea - so for me 50% of the appeal of these sims is the realism of the ocean modelling.
Oh and for the amusement of those here who know me (Sailor Steve!) I have now at long last left central London and retired by the sea! I can see the harbour from my bedroom window now and have seaguls on my roof. Hell, I may even take up fishing.

It would be cool if the game simulated the Dec. 1944 and Jan. 1945 typhoon's. I think in a sub though I would just go deep - any storm that can do that kind of damage is not one I want to experience from the bridge of a submarine.

Ive seen some hellacious storms with driving rain and huge seas. Seas so big they literally wash over the bridge. In real life there is no way a sailor could hang on through that. But it is a game.
Typically I can only 'stand' so much of this kind of weather and submerge.. deep... to get a bit of relief.
Never had a man go overboard though. The game will not allow you to man the guns in this kind of weather anyhow. Maybe thats what he is thinking of.

I was wondering if it were true and just the other day I went up to the bridge, and my chief to my right wasn't there and everyone else was at their respective watchstations, I checked my roster and he was there, wasn't sleeping or anything. Where in the hell could he have gone?
I think maybe he had to pee or something or maybe went to grab a bite to eat. But he completely abandoned the watch station without telling me!! what's with that? Maybe a glitch or something.
I'm going to have him read his general orders in front of the crew. I could mast him and send him ashore on the next in port period, but he's been good to the boat and saved our rears from an incoming aircraft.

That happens to me quiet often, especially when first leaving port. Once I submerge for a while and resurface, it tends to not happen again. You can go to the crew page, switch positions with the leader and then switch back again and he will re-appear though he will look like he has a coat hanger stuck in his butt. Don't really know what causes it.:-?

I know the Germans had safety harnesses for the watch crew in bad weather. I imagine the US subs had them too. Maybe. :hmm:

I was in one of the worst storms I've seen in the game last night. Driving rain and massive swells. The boat was being tosed around and I was going from being on the surface to 40 ft down depending on the swells. Like any good captain I took the bridge and rode it out, I had the engines set for ahead standards but I was only making between 4-6 knots (Gato class) so the seas were obviously affecting my speed. Looked around on the bridge from time to time and noticed my deck watch keeping up with me and seeing who could hold their breath the longest. I had read this post a day ago and was wondering if I was going to loose anybody but alas, we all made it through ok.

Of course they did but if you had waves completly submerging the bridge whoever was attached to that tether would take one hell of a beating and a very real possibility of drowning. It would be physically impossible to 'hang on' and hold your breath.
It would literally be a life threatning condition and no skipper in his right mind would subject a crew to those conditions.
Even in our favorite move Das Boot the skip took the boat deep to avoid severe weather.

You probably wouldn't be too popular with your watchcrew if you did force that upon them!

Like any good captain I took the bridge and rode it out,
Politely disagree a good captain would take the boat under till the 'typhoon' blew itself out.
Even if they did have to surface to charge batteries no one would be on the bridge and the crew would be sick, battered, tired, and pissed.

In real life yes, but since I was doing it after I read this thread and I was trying to see if I would lose anyone I figured I better be up on top. It's hard to read the sarcasm and humor in people's writing since we can't hear them actually say it.

ROW is an updated version of LBO ( plus much more, includes kriller2's work, others ), so you just need ROW. As mentioned the changes from stock visuals are night and day. Any problems installing, post on the ROW Thread and somebody will help you :yep::up:
Good luck with it.
