ISLAMABAD, Nov 3: President General Pervez Musharraf, in his capacity as the chief of army staff, on Saturday declared emergency rule in the country, suspended the country’s constitution, and issued a new Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO).Text of emergency proclamation (http://www.dawn.com/2007/11/03/images/proclamation.pdf)

The official announcement on the state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) came within minutes of a high-level meeting at the President House (Aiwan-i-Sadr) which was chaired by the President and attended by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, senior security and intelligence officials.

Shortly before the official announcement all the private and independent news channels in the country were pulled off the cable network, leading to intense speculations of a possible emergency rule or martial law.

They want to move into the Wetsern tribal areas? That is a courageous thing to do with a secret service openly sympathizing with islaimc fundamentalists and caring for the Taleban, and a greater part of the military doing so as well.

It probably will not go that far, with internal intrigues bringing it to a stall - nevertheless there is a risk that this escalates into unlimited civil war in Pakistan. If needing to give a number, I would say the chances for that scenario are 1:4 or 1:5.

If they would win in Waziristan is an open issue, and far from being certain. 1:1, I would assume. They haven't avoided that region and the tribes living there for decades for no reason, and in the past have been repeatedly defeated. It also would need a major mobilization of forces nation-wide.

Do i like it? Can't say so. Do I oppose it? Can't say so. No matter what happens, Pakistan will remain to be an untrustworthy and highly dangerous "partner". As I see it it is an enemy being busy with himself. And i can say - that is the one thing in this that i like.
