View Full Version : Of THESE Films, Which Is Your Favorite?

Definitely got to be "Papillon".
Brutal treatment in a penal colony has been explored on the screen before in such earlier films as I WAS A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG, but never has there been a more graphic potrayl of the sort of conditions prisoners faced under the worst sort of environment.
At times the film is extremely harrowing to watch, and at other times the story tends to drag a little. But there can be no doubt that McQueen and Hoffman create believable and sympathetic (yet quirky) characterizations and do some of the finest acting of their careers. Their roles are physically demanding and always played with total conviction.
Not for the squeamish, but extremely well acted by the entire cast, great location photography and a nice background score by Jerry Goldsmith. The first half of the story is much more compelling than what happens in the final years and the last half-hour of the film is a bit sluggish in pacing. But overall, a memorable escape film that ranks with the best of other escape stories.

Heh. I saw Papillon as a kid at a drive-in theater. Happily of lot of it went over my head at the time. Still remember being creeped out when they visited the lepers.

Yeah, that was a great scene.
"Well, they're all lepers."
"Yeah, so?"
"So, they'll probably kill you if the deal goes bad."
:rotfl:
Hey where the f*&^% is Apocalypse Now?! THAT is the best movie I've ever seen. GAH!
So instead I went with American History X, a close 2nd was Henry V.

Crazy Jack locked up in a hotel all winter with his wife, son, and a suck-up bartender that isn't really there. What could possibly go wrong?

The thin red line.
Why these movies on your list, Stealth hunter? Why not the many others? Anything special you are about?

With this being a submarine forum, where is The Hunt For Red October or Run Silent, Run Deep?
Glad to see someone else rates The Beast of War (aka The Beast), absolutely great movie, especially if you like tanks.

Of the list, I find the original Godfather the most enjoyable. Intellectually, I cannot argue against Hitchcock or Kubrick, but you did not ask what I thought were the most important films on the list. Thus, Godfather gets the vote.

The Blue Max was very cool.
I like the Alien movies, but this is my favourite one:

I love all the people complaining that their personal favorite is not on the list. None of my favorites are there, but since I was asked for my favorite that was on the list, I chose The Great Escape.
I like some of the others as well, but that one is my favorite. From the list.

A: YOU'VE MISSED THE TITLE OF THE THREAD.
B: ACTUALLY, THERE'S NOTHING ELSE.
C: ACTUALLY, THERE'S ONE MORE THING, BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT IT IS NOW.

From the list.....The Godfather Part 1
From the available choices, I would go with the Shawshank Redemption (the best Stephen King movie adaptation I have ever seen). My favorite movie is actually Silent Hill, but it is not on the list, of course.

The Thin Red Line by far from looking at your list. I have only seen it once many years ago and it touched me so powerfully. Simply unforgetable. :yep:

The Lord of the Rings set should have inlcluded all 3 films, as they're all part of the same story, but since it's a radio button thingy, I could only vote for one of them, so I picked Fellowship of the Ring. I actually liked all 3 of the films.
Any special reason why just those films were listed?

With this being a submarine forum, where is The Hunt For Red October or Run Silent, Run Deep?
Yeah, I was wondering where Red October was, too.
Great popcorn movie.
You know, every-so-often, AMC channel drags out the same war movies, plays them to death, but they never seem to add in Run Silent, Run Deep as well.
Star Wars was missing from the list as well. Saw the original back in 1977 about 30+ times (I have it memorized, so I don't need to pop in the DVD, I just play it in my head :sunny: )
Some titles on the list I have never heared of before (maybe I have seen some but I don't know the names).
I voted for Platoon.
