Got my first VCR tape of it in the late 1980s. Last track of number of times viewed sometime in the 1990s.

Theatrical version on cable TV and VHS: at least three, maybe four.

Director's Cut: Twice on VHS, three times on DVD.

Uncut Version: Well, I watched it regularly at least once a month, either in one sitting or one hour a day, so probably fifteen times, possibly as many as twenty.

On the other hand, since I haven't had a place to call my own, I haven't watched in in a year-and-a-half now (coincidentally the same length of time it's been since I played SH3).

That's okay, though, I have a great memory and something to look forward to.

Like a lot of people here, I've had various incarnations of it on tape for years. First VHS version I had (being the only one available) was the crappier shortened version (the one with the film poster illustration on the cover, and all the typos in the subtitles - 'switch to manuel' - always makes me laugh that one, especially since it's said while they are going into Spain). Then of course I watched the original TV series when it was first produced and screened in the UK, I've also got the 'director's cut' version with the green cover. So a conservative estimate would be, I've seen it maybe thirty or forty times in various forms.

Yeah, why were there no women in that movie? And why was everything so cramped and the same color? I mean, they could have at least painted some of the bulkheads pink, knocked down some of the bulkheads to make extra oom, and spruced things up with a flower here and there. And they didn't have to show people dying, either. They could have at least had the actors bath every now and then and wear fresh uniforms, too!

You have no idea of the tests I've had to pass, and you don't want an idea either, I have to pass many "tests" on a daily basis, I've been through hell in my life in places, and in the not so distant future of 2008 Im due to go through another healthy dosage of hell. Courage? Don't talk to me about courage, just because I can't be stuffed to sit and watch a 6 hour film doesn't mean I lack guts or fight, or fortitude.

What do you know of True Tests anyway? And what has true tests got to do with me not liking a film?

:o ..but but you are part of the team.

LOL I know that! But I draw the line at any film where one man flicks a booger at the other man. Also its just not my kind of film I mean.... its really really long and slow. They all look filthy and gross, and sweaty, which is normal and accurate I know... but just cause I like SH3 and love my GWXperiences... I think I'll refrain sipping from the holy grail of U-boats that is Das Boot....:D

No way, this is a mans film lots of drinking throwing up, peeing on cars farting and crabs. A well acted film With high suspense and a gripping story line of life and death on a sea with no mercy.

My dad borrowed the tape from the library for me to watch when I was 12 years old. Up until then I was brought up watching Patton and The Longest Day. Das Boot was my first lesson in the idea that war isn't always glorious. (And that submarines can actually be sunk! :ping:)

I've seen it quite a few times but I'd say I've sat down and properly engaged with it about twice, so that's what I picked.

Not to bait or anything but I don't think it's some kind of tour-de-force mindblow to make the sub community weep. I think it's a great film, and definitely my favourite naval film for its authenticity, but I find it hard to believe a hardcore sub geek wouldn't find tons of inaccuracies in it. To the uninitiated it's as authentic as it gets, but it does have some glaring moments that make little sense. Giant cast iron flanges being repaired in 3 seconds flat, destroyers magically teleporting around the horizon (apparently), and I dislike the way the boat judders left and right violently as if (duh) it was rigged up to a structure that made it do just that. It would just go down as a slightly ropey special effect if it wasn't for the fact that Peterssen spent a lot of money on that rig in an attempt to make it look "as real as possible". I find it hard to believe a boat submerged in millions of tons of saline water would vibrate horizontally whenever under any shock. That is of course assuming she wouldn't have sunk somewhere within the first 40 minutes of the film in the first place.

It's great though. I'd love to get hold of the series version.

You're right, of course. The scale of the wake makes it obvious its a model, and to get the explosions into the camera's field-of-view every single depth charge is so close that any single one would have cracked the hull and sunk the boat. Personally I would have preferred no underwater shots at all, but someone recently pointed out to me that anyone not familiar with the subject would have no idea what was going on. That's probably true for the rest of our complaints.

On the other hand, though, just having the full-scale interior defining the closeness of the situation...

It's not perfect, but it's close, and to date no-one has made anything better.:sunny:

Not every event they went through is in the movie. Early in the film The Old Man mentions they've already been depth-charged, but we didn't see that either.

I didn't think they sank any more either, but the above is the best excuse I could come up with.:rotfl:

The first time, I saw Das Boot in Nairobi. My wife arrived the following day and asked me if there were any good movies playing. I told her I heard Das Boot was pretty good. So we went to see it. :D

My next encounter with it was in France where I watched it for a week, all ten hours of it on TV.

When I got my first laptop, I rented the DVD

In California, I saw the director's cut. In the last 3 years I watched it 3 times when friends dropped in with the DVD

So that makes it, what? 7 times?
