Mine runs on Vista-64 without a problem.
I assume you've got it patched?
Running as admin?

I'm running SHIV on Vista Ultimate (32-bit) and not having any problems. Could you be alittle more specific as to what kinda of problems you might be having? Maybe include your computer specs for us to better help you out.

Don't install it in the /Program Files/ folder. I haven't and have no probs whatsoever.

Ditto here on Vista.... do as the others say, install in the root of the drive and run as admin. Also make sure they are patched AND YOU KEEP UP WITH THE DRIVER UPDATES!!! Especially if you have an NV Graphics card.
I have both SHIII and IV installed in a "SilentHunter" folder on the root of my C and they both run sweet
AMD dual Core +4800
GT8600
Viewsonic VX2025WM running at 1680 x 1050

Is your SHIII patched up?
I can't get the dang thing to patch.... I know that this is kinda a SH3 question, but I wanted to try out the new GWX and can't..... :(

Yup, I also have SHIII 1.4b, GWX 1.03 and SHCommander running fine under Vista. It is also in my user space, in "../games/ubisoft/SHII/".
If you've installed it in the default "program files" directory, the patch won't work - since Vista's UAC will cause the actual patch files to be written to the hidden "AppData" directory in your user space. And for SHIII to work, the patch files need to be in the actual SHIII program directory. Installing outside of "program files" bypasses UAC control, and the patch will then write the files where they need to be for SHIII to find them during loading.

Thanks a million guys, I can't wait to try this this weekend.
I'm primarily a USN guy, but really have been wanting to go for a spin in a VIIc lately. :)

Put this this in tech help also to span the answers...sorry if you read this twice.
So...I got rid of my old PC with the 1300X ATI mess and got a new rig that more than handels SH4. I had the usual issues that I read up on dealing with UAC on VISTA and thought I had it figured out.
After installing the game into the the usual root folder and the new folder outside of Program files (thinking it was a UAC issue), I get an error when I try to start the game: "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_32.dll was not found. Does this have to do with Direct X 9? I didnt install it thinking I didnt need it since I have Direct X 10. Any help out there would be appreciated before I mess up the new rig.....Core 2 Duo e4500 with 3G of RAM and NVIDIA 8300 and VISTA :-?

Yup, that's a directx9 file - just install 9 as it lives alongside 10 quit happily.

Thank Seafarer...that was the problem. Not sure why, but I could use the regular root folder without UAC issues. Must be an update for windows that they improved upon since I just picked up my rig last week.
thanks again....good hunting! :yep:

Interesting - ultimate is different in many ways from the other versions. You have the actual Windows policy editor utility, for example, which none of the other versions have. You also have the full backup/clone utility, which none of the other versions have.
The single biggest PITA about Vista is the stupid versions/pricing scheme - most idiotic thing MS has ever done, IMO. One OS should come in one version - full feature set for all.

This seems like a place to ask. will vista 64 run 32 bite software. SHIII & SHIV are 32 bite, correct?

I think Reaves or anyone with 64 bit can answer that.

Yes, 64-bit Vista will run 32-bit programs. It executes them in a virtual x86 environment.
Regarding UAC\Security changes in Vista, it had to happen. Many programs for years have been (incorrectly) designed to expect being run at Administrator level. Vista is starting to enforce tightened security, and there will be some pain as application writers realize they have change the lazy way things have been done in the past.
Regarding shipping one version of Windows with all features, Microsoft can't do that. They have already been sued by the European Union and forced to release a stripped down version without Windows Media Player.

True, but they sure did not need 5 different editions, at 5 different price points (and has anyone actually purchased the Home Basic anyway?). And to restrict the backup app to solely the most expensive edition is just cheap and low. Simply go with just the ultimate edition, with and without media player - what's so difficult about implementing that marketing scheme?
P.S. and, IMO, UAC and the whole file and registry virtualization scheme is a horrible means of implementing account level security features. The goal behind it is fine, but the actual implementation is just plaon fugly.

32 bit programs do work, but you may have problems with some older programs (I haven't been able to get IL2 running, although I didn't give it much time). I personally haven't tried SH3 but SH4 works without any hassles on my Vista Ultra 64. (I purchased it OEM btw so it was actually cheaper than retail Home basic).
SH4 actually does utilise mutlithreading IIRC so there shouldn't be any proplem with 64 bit.

Having Vista installed into your system makes you a slave to your own PC. You are forced to do things the way Microsoft wants you to and there's nothing you can do to change it.
I don't want to be installing my games all over the place in mutiple directories just to make them run properly. Silent Hunter is actually the only game I have which needs this done. Had I don't more research on SH4, I probably wouldn't have bought it, however, I'll remember this when SH5 hits the stores.

I can't say i've had the experiance. I installed SH4 without any hassel whatsoever. It's installed in the default directory as well.
People really should remember that 98 - XP was just as bad when it came to compatibility with old games. Even MACS don't work that great with old software and newer version of the OS.

To install a game or anything else you have to be admin...
I also have Vista, no problemo, and even using without a DVD to boot SH4... all from the HDD
Well--I'm taking the plunge. I have a dual-boot system (XP Pro and Vista Home Premium). I haven't installed much on the Vista side but thought I'd give SH4 a try. I just installed it, dl'd 1.3 patch and am going to mod it to my taste. Be firing it up in a couple minutes.
I'm a computer tech by trade and to date I haven't liked Vista. But then, I didn't like mushrooms the first time I tried them either :shifty:. My biggest iddues I've had with Vista so far have been getting nVidia drivers for my EVGA 7900 GT to work--still have a few fights with it in fact.
I'm doing this because I really have to learn more about Vista. If I learn anything I'll try to help out others that are having problems. And I've seen many issues with the OS and various manufacturers attempts to create better drivers.
I'm goin' in!!! :stare:
Peto
Well that was fun. It took from my previous post to now to have the game CTD. I suspect it is a video driver problem (I think the 7900's are a buggar in Vista). After having other "arguments and disagreements" with Vista today, I think I'll retire back to XP for now.
Suffice it to say--when some of you talk about issues with Vista--I believe you. I've had too many customers come in and PAY TO GET RID OF IT to say it's all user error :nope: .
This round goes to Vista...
