I have been asked at work to think about video conferecing kit.

I know the cheap solution is to get a web cam and VOIP with a projector.

Can you guys point me in the right direction of some websites where I can work out what I need.
Nothing super expensive but at least will be decent.

A lot depends on how many people will be at either end of the call in most cases. The bigger the number the better the kit needs to be so you can talk at the same time and not suffer too much lag.

Sony do some reasonable kit but it can be pricey as they usually are.

Cisco also are good with good range from baisc to super professional again not super cheap though. http://cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/video/index.html

To be honest if you have good broadband connections a hi quality webcam and mike setup using skype or the like might be what you need. If it is individuals at their desks then slightly cheaper mid range webcams and mid range mikes or headsets would be the go. Check out Logitech http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/webcam_communications/&cl=au,en

Will be in the boardroom where we have a speaker phone, PC with projector attached.

I was thinking just a decent webcam and use the speakerphone for voice.

LOL, Jim. Not really VIDEO conferencing is it.

A decent Webcam + Messenger/Skype + VOIP Phone + Projector should suffice.

You can get a webcam with a separate mic, although you might be able to use the VOIP phone, setup Messenger/Skype and invite the people you need in the meeting and then route it all though the PC/Projector. You will need a high resolution webcam with a decent FPS capture.

Probably the cheapest way to do it. Certainly the best choice if it's going to be the first installation of such communications at your work. You can then tailor the sytem to peoples specific needs.

There's no sense in buying/setting up an all singing/all dancing system when the idea is in it's infancy. All companies need small steps when new technollogy is introduced/involved. Besides, think of the upgradablity, start small and build on what you start with. You've just ensured yourself a Video Conferencing support position for a few years.;)

No nothing all singin and dancing. We want it so our suppliers can see us face to face when we bollock them. So we can basically hold up a piece of kit and go "see its f**ked".

Nothing super expensive but at least will be decent.Do you want to connect mulitple people, or do simple web cam stuff to use with Messenger? ie. Is this a project for your biz? What is sounds like is you are trying to recreate a social networking type technology. Why re-invent the wheel? I believe there are tons of apps that do this for you already.

Don't forget to get a huge printout of the War Room in the Pentagon and put it on the wall behind you, in view of the webcam:rotfl:
