I'm amazed to hear that many people here have completed several careers. I played this game for few months now and I'm still on my first career and the year is 1941 (but ofcourse I have several careers I abadoned before). Do you guys have lot of free time in your hands or what?

I miss one option: "None".
That would be my option, because I never survived long enough to complete a career in SH3. :()1:
0, April 41, the longest I have lasted.

I've only had the game a few weeks, but I have never lasted past the 4th patrol so far. I'm playing GWX - and still learning the ropes (obviously).

Ive only played three careers. The first was at a friends house because my computer being a laptop of some years couldnt play it, in that career I got as far as mid 1941 before his missus put a stop to him playing it!! She did what a destroyer couldnt do!! That career was using stock SH3 anyway so wasnt as difficult.
The second career was when I managed to build this computer which is a monster and plays the game perfectly. In this second career I got as far as mid 1940 and then I found GWX on this forum and so I ended that career to start a new one.
The career im on at the moment is my third and my first using GWX and SH3Commander. So far I am in Jan 1940 on my seventh patrol. Also ive only been in the North sea (in this career) although im sure I am destined for the Atlantic as I should get a type VII soon.
Good hunting! :arrgh!:

In gameplay, just the one.
In testing, none, we push the risks to the limits to evaluate the outcomes. :arrgh!:
I consider "completed" to be
*) war ended
*) SH3 commander ended my career
*) I got killed or became POW
.. that will be around 9 now
If you just meant: survived the war in a uboat from the first to the last day:
it is 0

I would say 10, but most ended in me been sunk/captured.
Due to some unfortunate pc problems I had to abandon several careers.
But I think I ended ... gamewize 4. Meaning I got killed :)

I started three careers simultaneously, one from each available flotilla. Then new mods came out, especially Rubini's original Harbor Traffic mod, and I scrubbed them and started over. Then the Kiel Canal mod came out, and I scrubbed the new ones and started over. Then more new stuff came out...
Suffice it to say, I've never gotten beyond the middle of 1940, and I've never finished anything.

I almost got to 1945 in stock SH3. almost!
Currently Im in 1943 in GWX 1.03 and I'm so getting the crap kicked out of me everytime I go out. Its not fair.
Not fair but certainly a lot more fun than out of the box, thick as mud stock, was.

Currently I'm playing GWX.. I have bet a bunch of careers and it took alot of work and time out of it! I always like a challenge..so I make it harder each career with the realism and settings and all that. I'm married to my U-boat!:smug:

None, and I dont have the time right now to play for long periods.
Had SH3 since release day and still on my first career in stock 1.4b! July 1940, mid-way through my 9th patrol. First 6 were in Type II boats, now on my third in a VIIB. I tend to take my time on patrol, especially when attacking ships. If I try to rush things with time compression then all ends up in a mess or I get into a bad position.
I'm very, very eager to try GWX - downloaded 1.03 months ago, but I want to finish my first career before I do. Seems a shame to abandon it after this long. I could do a multiple install but I'll probably abandon my original career as GWX will be so good! (Though I am a little worried my modest computer won't cope. It struggles on occasion with stock 1.4b and wave texture mods, or near harbours, for example).

As for the question I lost count.

I've been playing for what - over a year I think - and if "sleeping with the fishes" counts as "completed a career" then I would say easily over a dozen.
However, I've never seen 1944. I play "Dead is Dead". I don't use 100% realism - I just can't live without the map contact updates, I've never been able to do the navigation without it - but everything else is set to real. Generally I get overly aggressive and poke someone in shallow water, or I hang out too long at dawn on the surface and get popped by a plane, with rather permanent and watery results.
I'm convinced 1944 is a fiction. There is a rip in the space-time continuum and the world ends in 1943. Probably the Manhattan Project. Or Area-51.

Naturally
But on the other hand, I'd almost welcome a depth charge or two. In 2 years of playing the game on and off (in about equal measure), I've yet to hear one dropped! The clueless escorts never detected me... yet. My only experience of being depth charged was in the single missions which I tried a handful of times.
Maybe it's time I started taking more risks, so I can die and end my time with 1.4b. Mind you, my current patrol has me going to BF21, just off the tip of Cornwall. I'm one grid away, south of Ireland, and have had three DDs pass me rather closely (~2km) in the space of 2 hours. If I attack a ship in these parts I might never see patrol 10. But at least I'll see GWX at last!! :D

none as of yet: Jan 26 1940
i am, at the moment, getting battered off the north west coast of ireland.
i turned off the 'damage % thingy' so i cant tell how much flak my boat has taken; but i know this, i cant dive much lower than 50 mtrs; everything starts to pop. i've taken alot from the tommies including 16000 tns +
and now i guess i'm having to pay for it.
this might be the last message, so, if it is, thank you all and good luck in completing your carreers...
45 mtrs down, but not out....

Being in the U-boat service is a game of cat and mouse. In the early war you are mostly the cat. But you occasionally get to be the mouse, and its actually very enjoyable. The cat (we call him Tommy) is fat and lazy, partially blind, and after playing with you for a while, gets bored, gives up, and goes back to his nap.
Later in the war, you start spending more and more time donning the mouse ears. The cheese stinks like toe jam and the kitchen is covered in wall to wall traps. Tommy the cat has brought a bunch of lean and hungry tomcat friends with him to the party. They don't give up, they don't nap, and they work as a team. The birds, which were mere hummingbirds in 1939, have turned into great horned owls, they can see at night, and they're aggressive as hell.
It's a tough job being a mouse in 1943.

Well i didnt played the stock game much and i havent gone more than 1942 but now i GWX on 100% realism i am at mid 1942 and survived yet.Hope i will make it to the end of the war.
Btw i have been under attack near american coast by some small motor boat and with its machineguns it droped my hull integrity to 36 ! (even when i took hits of 2 dc just behind the conning tower the integrity was above 50).
Are these motor boats that dangerous ???

I have had many careers and they usually end on Patrol Two with my sub in a million pieces at the bottom of the ocean. Sometimes.. I end up in a million pieces on patrol three.. but that's a rarity. So.. does getting blown to bits count as completing a career ? :hmm:

How many other games do you continue to play, when you find it almost impossible to complete them:hmm:
I have three (3) complete careers, since the game was released.
One from Sep -39 to the end, started in stock and ended in "my modded" version.
One from Jan -45 to the end in The Grey Wolves 1.1. Green crew, really tough:rock:
And one from Oct -42 to the end in GWX 1.03. 30´th Flotilla in the Black Sea and from Aug -44 the 33´rd Flotilla in Flensburg. That last 1/2 year was so hard, almost impossible to reach the Atlantic. It never took more then 20min on surface before the Rwr started ringing, without it I would not have had a chance:rock:
Played lots of careers - all ending with me dead. Many of them after less than 12 patrols.
Just got home by the skin of my teeth on the 18th patrol, mind you on my previous patrol I arrived home at base with 12% integrity!

Longest I've made it a career is 17 missions ending in May of 44. Snorkel helps a lot ;). Play GWX and hardcore--if I get offed, I don't reload the mission. But usually, I get killed by 43.
I've found the Type VII to improve my odds a lot. The IX is fun but much harder to evade with.

Haven't completed a Career yet, too busy testing GWX, think I'll add JC Wolfs Mod on Monday, get the men ready and the 'Sub Ship Shape' then launch a Career on Christmas Day. I know the men won't want to sail on Xmas day but 'C'est la Guerre' and besides, the Gogglebox will have nowt but a load of drivel on as per usual :rotfl:
I remember when SH3 released, a lot of people started kinda arcadish play, me, too, staying mostly in the map screen (because that's only where you can go higher time compression), some people even complained max TC value of 1024 so changed to 2048 (especially to go to the pacific). With stock game and automap, WE and uber deck gun, I could sometimes exterminate a mid-size whole convoy with only 1 submarine :rotfl: That kind of playing style usually took 2 - 5 hours for 1 patrol. It's not realistic at all but it's got its own funness. As a submarine shooter, SH3 is a very well done game! I think it was the success factor of SH3 as business then.
Then many mods, Rub and post Rubs like IUB, many were usually forcused on realistic or historical simulation. Then after some quiet months then post Rub "super mod" period began. NYGM and GWX arrived and got major. By then many "experienced" or "hardcore" and players and with a lot of mods started playing in less and less time compression. Aparently now 1 patrol takes much much longer real world time than before... in my case 1 patrol became 4 hours to 1 month. Shadowing covoy, manual tageting with harder AI enemies, less contacts etc all contributed longer "boring" real world hours :rotfl:We're so sadistic that we're making our sim more and more boring and harder in normal sense. I've once succeed in Gibraltar single mission under NYGM of some version, it took me 16 hours to get pass the narrow path alive.
I remember a couple of guys were doing no time compression patrol. One guy was even running his computer 24 hours and doing his "shift" of an 8 hour. (I belive it's the stock version; there wasn't many mod then - there wasn't even SH3 mod forum existed here) I remember we called him crazy with strange respect :rotfl: I don't remember he even managed to get his patrol grid...

Here it is Apr 1940, and Kapitan Bruderhase and his stalwart crew is still surviving. We are currently off the eastern coast o England, and due to the length days, reasonable weather and full moon, it has been necessary run more submerged during the night due to a couple of pesky aircrafe, and their buddys with the DD service.
Playing stock SHIII, realism 80%. with map up dates. Between my manual targetting skills or lack thereof, about four duds we have sunk four ships. 1st Flot and recent upgrade to Type IID.
Eventually I will install GWX, but as I now I have enough of a challenge, plus I'm not sure if my modest computer can do justice to GWX. It struggles with SHIV.
Hope all have a Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years - keep up the good hunting

Maybe 3-4 different careers over the almost 2 years I've been playing. Thing is, I've never actually taken one past June 1940, as for one reason or another, mainly new GW installs, I've had to start new careers. That's playing something like 12 hours a week, but I do have it happen now and then when RL interferes that I don't play for 4-6 weeks.

Yes!
Just took my 24th patrol to War's end (My 13th in the realm of GWX).
I tell you, GWX2 has made the ASW lots better than in previous releases. But once I have access to acoustic homing torps, I worry a lot less about singular ASW encounters.
But, wow, I really turn into a coward around mid-1944. For whatever reason, that's when all my tricks seem to stop working.

Having played SH3 for about two years all heavily modded to be extremely difficult and always at 100% I have only survived two careers. Both GW1.3 (I think maybe one was 1.2??)
But, one was a 1944 so not really a full one and the other was 1.3 and it started early 1943. I doubled or more all escorts for NA convoys (43 on) and no AS vessel was less than crew rated 3 from the start.
If all this sounds like too much well, basically it is/was.
I could not afford to make a mistake with the Royal Navy and paid each time I did with death.
The intensity in Grey Wolves, all versions and now with GWX2 even better, is the best gaming/simming I have experienced.
While I do mod my GWX2 by redoing what escorts and how many based on research for various years it is still small considering how anal I am about historic relevance.
I was doing SH4 for a couple months but while the graphics are better the play does not compare to the NA or GWX2..
I just started a new GWX2 career to see how it all runs this one from the beginning in a TypeVIIB and so far so good, no glitches at all.
I did change the neutral shipping to not be a negative so I could attack ships in the war zone obviously headed to supply the enemy. So far I sank one neutral in two patrols and let 3 pass as only if it is beyond a doubt they are close enough where no other destination is possible do allow myself to attack.
How dumb did that Amerikaneren Schwein think I was?:rotfl:
So far two thumbs up for GWX2:rock:

`39 - `40 a bunch, lost track.
`41 - `42 a few, maybe a dozen.
`43 - the death year, bay of Biscay?; pray.
`44 - `45 a big fat zero, with the exception of one carrer made it into 44.

I've been playing SH3 since it first came out, but when it did I was into another FPS game and only played this on the side. Now I'm focusing more on SH3 but the majority of my time spent on it is on testing out sub repaints, so my grand total of completed careers is a big fat 0 !!! But I've got multiple careers going at once so if I focused on one and one alone I would probably have finished 2 by now.
