I think this game has just been released. Anyone know. Is anyone playing it, was keeping tabs on it late last yr then forgot all about it now i hear its out.
A preview back in July07. Gamespot - http://tinyurl.com/yqj8jw
Stories in fantasy role-playing games are often an exercise in black and white. There's often a noble protagonist (your character) who usually starts out as an orphan or peasant unaware of his or her destiny, and then there's some unspeakable, monstrous evil that wants to take over the world for no reason apart from that it's there. But what happens when you play a fantasy RPG where you have to continually choose what you think is the lesser of two evils? That's what Atari and Polish developer CD Projekt are aiming for with The Witcher, an ambitious RPG based on the works of Polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski. With The Witcher finally nearing the end of development, we got a good look at how the game goes about creating a morally hazy world

This game is an oblivion killer.
You can play the game in 3 different modes, top down view, behind view or side view, the pictures show my character in side view - you can place him left or right, i found this the best way to play. If played in normal or higher option your herbalism is important to know as you have to gather herbs to make your own health potions etc., also taking to much health potions can make you sick instead of healthy. Meditation is needed to lvl up/ potion making. Great story so far im only just entered chapter 2, chapter 1 is more an introduction. Fighting talent is different, when u fight clicking on the enemy at the right time will cause your character to do better moves, click to early or late and your do worse than good. Best move is when u stun an enemy you can do a death move, cut his throat or slice him down the middle :) One other thing this game has plenty of cut scenes which really moves the story along, these pictures dont really do it justice but the graphic detail is brilliant, especially coming from an modified NWN2 engine.
Great game so far IMO way better than Oblivion and Gothic 3.

Hah, Ive notice when it rains the npc's head for cover and moan about the weather :) You wont see them walking around in the rain looking stupid in this game.
Yeah I was having a look at this in a computer shop yesterday when I went in there to buy ARMA's expansion disk. I don't know too much about it, but I did notice that there was a 'collector's edition' in a big box, and I also noticed it was 39 quid for the standard version in a DVD case, which is a bit on the pricey side for PC game. Still, it does look interesting.

Your love the movie cut scenes Chock, theres plenty of them. :)
The biggest reason the game has been a quiet launch is that its from Eastern Europe and only landed a Western publisher a few months ago. Which is a real shame because the dev team have really pulled off a fantastic vision of Geralt's home and it deserves far greater exposure than its getting.

Just got this game yesterday and so far I've been enjoying it alot. The world seems more alive than Oblivion's. Like Kiwi said, the NPCs head for cover when it starts to rain (which is quite often atleast on the first village I'm in). And I like how mature the game is concerning the story and the world around you. Not that usual fantasy world, but ppl with some serious troubles in their lifes, alot of review say there's no black or white, but a deep grey in the game world and that's exactly how it is.
And of course, being a Finn, the first thing I did in the first village was get drunk and tried to hit on the waitress. Didnt go too well. :rotfl:Tho, later on I got a date with her.. which I forgot while spending some time with the hot witch... now try to explain that to the waitress. :88)

Hey Dowly - check to see if it has that ugly Tages copy protection. That is the only thing that is keeping me from getting that game.

PS. There is another version of it too - the Not Rated version I see.

The copy protection is called 'SolidShield'.

Also, IIRC, the US version is censored. The language the NPC's us can be abit harsh at times, like one told me "Your mother sucks dwarfs c*ck".
2nd also, the dialog has been shortened by ~20% on all other version but polish. :(

You bet it's out. :) Heard about it on the Elderscrolls forums.
Someone mentioned the music, and was very suprised to find it:

Been playing it on the PC at work for a couple of weeks now, low volume in the background, great stuff.
and after I saw the intro on youtube......

Every other review has been spot on by him, but that is utter poo. In all his reviews he usually mentions that he looks for gameplay and a good story. Witcher is an RPG, RPGs are usually heavily dialogue driven and he mentions that as a bad thing. Same goes for the running around, every RPG has that. It is obvious he doesnt like the genre, and that's where he makes a great mistake as a reviewer, he tries to find something good about a game that belongs to a genre he doesnt like.

I know what you mean, but if his point about the manual and amount of key strokes required to play is true then its really not my sort.
I have only just got my head around WoW and the keys I use on that.
Save RPGs for consoles, they can't give you far too many keys then
Trust me, I havent even opened the manual and learned everything during the first 2 hours. The tutorial tips & hints you get during the play explaing everything.
EDIT:
Here, check these 2 reviews. Gives you abit better view on it. The IGN review mentions load times & crash issues, but I think the review has been done pre 1.2 patch, as my load times are quick and have had no crashes on my ~20hr game.

Also I have to realy dissagree with you on console rpgs (I have a strong aversion to them).

Nah Rotary The Witcher is a good game trust me, as for the keys what dowly said, hell i never read the manual either the first chapter of the game is kinda like a tutorial that by the time you end Chapter 1 you would have worked everything out. Key wise.
But yeah i need to finish this game:damn:.

Most tend to be rather shallow RPG's, I also generaly dislike the Final Fantasy style ones as i tend to find them dull to irritating. I also don't much care for game pads.

I'm not a great fan of the linear ways of FF either. But an example of Oblivion shows that it is possible to give a great RGP to a console.
But, horses for courses and all that!

PS. Gamecopyworld is not a pirate site to by the way Neon. Read their disclaimer. They deal in traininers and no-cd executables. Copying games for the world (anyone for example) is not allowed nor tolerated and they refuse to post code to do so. If you don't have the orginal game for installation for example, you are screwed at this site. Figured I'd point that out, but I will also respect your wishes on the matter too.
Beat the game twice with two diffrent endings, Luv this game, women, dice poker, tavern fist fights, drinking contests , great stuff ! :arrgh!:

Technically those no cd files is all you need to pirate a copy of a game, aside from getting the actual game from somewhere of course. Also guess who makes those no cd files (the pirate groups who release pirate copies)..
Though GCW is not a pirate site per say, A lot of pirates do use that site as a resource to either trade games with friends, or to get the no cd for the latest patch for their pirated copy.
Also its not my wishes per say but Neals, no cd links are a strict no no.
So anyhow no more GCW links or references plz :)
Back on semi topic, Oblivion is still far better on pc then console imho (could have been better still if they had actualy designed the UI for pc)

Fair enough though. It does have some (very loose) ties to groups that are of questionable morals, so I will comply - no more talk of GCW!!! :D

The Witcher enchanced edition (TWEE) is out, bought it yesterday, v.good! other than the usual load of extra "making of.." and "soundtrack" dvds the game now contains 2 extra adventures, a game guide, the game engine has been optimised (load times reduced by 80%) and updated, up to 200 new animations and a " create your own" Adventure editior called D'jinni. i believe if you own the game already the 1.4 patch is this upgrade, although i went out and bought the new box to get all the extra bits. I've just played the for about 4 hours and i must say this is one of the best RPG's i've played, although i can't helping feeling the main protaganist is a Jedi in medieval times - as it feels like KOTOR set in the Dark ages!!

Yep they made it a lot better, one thing you forgot is that they rerecorded a lot of the dialog so now the stories make sense. This is what the game should have been at release. If you own the original game you can get everything here to patch it up to the EE version. Oh and all the extra bits are also available for download as well.

Witcher is a game that's just bursting with good design decisions on the part of the development team. Personally i'm more an open-world "Mr. Flashpoint" sort of person. So the fact that I thought the game was even the slighest entertaining should be worth notice. Turns out Witcher is just the result of good planning and *gasp* thinking, on the part of the developer. Something so few of them even bother to do these days.
Nah, they're usually too busy stirring up hype with marketing buzzwords, like "epic trilogy" and "player experience". Translated from corporate to english, they mean "scam". So it's pretty refreshing when developers knew what they were doing, (Unlike blind, deaf, and dumb EA) but never succumbed to mindless self indulgence. (Like Silicon Knight's most recent ejaculate.) :)

I had started the game a few months back, then trailed off, getting into Oblivion, and then Oblivion trailed off as I sunk my teeth into SH4.
I had gotten nearly to what I believe is the end of Chapter 1, got my rear end handed to me about 20 times by some demon dog, gave up and put it aside. I realized that I had just been running through the story and not paying that much attention to what "style" I was using for battle, not working on potions, etc. Details, details.....
Monday, I downloaded the enhanced version and English language pack and installed it all on Tuesday evening.
Last night, after starting the game, I deleted all my saves. If there's new stuff, I wanna see it. Will be working on it tonight after any R/L issues are delt with. Yes, this time I promise to pay more attention to those pesky tutorials.
