Need help with my drawing folks

I need the knowledge of folks in here please...I need to know ...on a Gato class 44 who stands where on the tower and lookouts...for the drawing I need to know who wears what type of hat etc and what uniform for the tower...hope you folks can help me out please :)

Two sources i would recommend are a good hard look at the 1958 movie 'Run silent, Run Deep', and some decent modelling books by Squadron/Signal and Osprey.

Granted, Run Silent, Run Deep is not 100 percent accurate in its portrayals, but it comes very close, and with the theme of Clark Gable running constant drills in order that he might sink 'Bungo Pete', it shows a great many shots of the watch crew in position and would also give you a good idea of dress too, as in these respects, it is pretty accurate. There is also the scene where the cook gets left on deck when the sub dives, which would probably assist you in terms of scale and such.

Squadron/signal and Osprey titles aimed at modellers are a great source of info too of course, as you probably know. There are specific titles from SS on the Gato and other US subs, and Osprey do many titles on crew dress including one on US WW2 sub crews, and like the DVD of Run Silent, Run Deep, they are well worth having on your bookshelf. I'm pretty sure Borders sells the DVD for about a tenner, and Ian Allen bookshops usually stock Osprey and Squadron/Signal titles in abundance, most of these books are a tenner too.

Thanks folks...mainly seeing the fact that like u-Boats the uniform rule was relaxed while on patrol.

That's probably true, but bear in mind that things were not as squalid on US fleet boats as they were on a type VII German boat, so the crews were generally a bit neater on a Gato than they were on a Type VII.

A Gato was the best part of 100 feet longer than the typical U-Boat and unlike the German craft, which was essentially a coastal boat forced into Atlantic service, the Gato was designed from the outset as a blue water fleet boat, in that it was originally intended to accompany stuff like aircraft carriers as part of a task force. It had an ice-cream maker in the galley for example, which gives you some idea of the difference! But even if you disregard that, it does mean that there would have been more room to hang up and dry clothes etc for the US guys, although I'm sure it still would have been no pleasure cruise.

Again watching Run Silent, Run Deep and comparing it to something like Das Boot will likely confirm this.
