whats the crush depth of a type VII B
thought 200metres was a little risky, and also what if depth below keel is only 75 to 100 metres

the crush depth is somewhere around 260 meters with an undamaged hull
and if you only have 75-100 meters below the keel ?
well pray for an unexperienced DD crew then:rotfl:

Although my crew is always nervous, when des boss dives down to 210, this is my standard depth to evade the DDs. If this can not be achieved, I think about the option to leave on torp in tube ready for "self defense" (;))... and at that point my crew gets REALY nervous.
You can always blast yourself your egress corrridor though the escorts. :lurk:
It just costs you for tonnage and BDU might call this an unnecessary risk

You have to start to think like a uboat Kpt
Is a shallow water attack worth it ?
Do I have an escape route
How many escorts are there
There are a few good tactics written throughout the forums
Brags site has a few too
Tis a big step up from stock
Glad you are enjoying the GWXperience

I've heard the whispers of my crew threatening to load me into a tube and shooting me out as a decoy when i take them below 200 meters. But i never have to pay for a drink once we get back in port in 1 piece:lol:

Listen to BBW's advice, be very careful and very affraid of the escorts and you will survive the war. In the mean time enjoy the Xperience and if you have any problem just give us a shout

Here's another tip, bad for the nerves but good for your chances, in rough weather it's often better to stay at 17 meters or so when being hunted...the waves and wind mess with the enemy hydrophones, you just need a bit of luck that the thing doesn't steam right over your boat:up:
best used when evading a single escort though, for multiples the answer is always deeper...deeper...deeper

Your welcome Von Hally - that said i had no involment in GWX prior to 1.04 development, but on behalf of those who slaved away over it, I think its kind words like yours that make it seem all worth while for us LOL

When the depth is not enough i usualy go to 10 meters from keel and run at 1 knot silent, watching the map for the contacts and when i hear noise of "flank ahead" over my head i dont think twice,go to flank and 90 degrees turn then again 1knot silent. Few minutes ago i run into a task force im sure 4 destroyers and 2 battleships and 2 other witch i didnt recongnize but in any case saw them little more than a kilometer from me directly on 90 degrees on me.I tried to dive imediatly but DD open fire one closed from behind and a shot without a solution sunk one and i dive to 90 meters (bottom was 100) and on zig zag i think they run out of deph charges because it seems they moved on top of me but didnt drop.Well i have suffered a dmg that destryed mine conning tower and the guns but i survived :) though almost a hour real time without tc

see, what you do there, is, put your uniform on Bernard. your crew'll then think he's you and send him out as a decoy:ping:

just glad there are modders out there with the ability to recognise the potential of this great game, then have the passion to create such a submersive (no pun intended) simulation of such an under used genre of WWII. the time and effort are obvious. the thanx the other day to you guys was more for the help and time you all gave without what i expected would be "tut tuts" and mutch rolling of the eyes at a newb!!!
cheers

One other thing you might want to try, and it's if you're up to it, is to take out the DDs using your rear tube (if you have a sub with one). The DDs will often times after passing over you will circle around to make another pass. Track them and as soon as they are right at 180 degrees in your periscope you let em have it. One time in one convoy I sunk 3 DDs this way before moving on to the convoy it self.
