2 years out, still not old. SH3 is timeless

As Silent Hunter 3 is heading into middle age as well as the release of Silent Hunter 4. The inevitable question of who will continue to play is asked. BUT I for one can't see any end in sight of my love for Silent Hunter III. There's a reason why games like Tetris and Doom are still played today in this age of near-photorealistic games. They are extremely fun, and appeal to newer generations.

Silent Hunter 3 in my opinion has achieved this as well. It's such a beautifully crafted game. While graphically inferior to it's successor, It is the sheer quality of this game that makes it stand out. The premise is simple, being successful in it is not. We always strive to do more, Every new patrol is a new experience. Failures are nerve tensingly frustrating and successes are as personally rewarding as they are materially.

Last but certainly not least, is the sense of community this game has brought us. All of us here now are brothers now because of this game. We all share our love of the sea, our experiences in the virtual battle of the Atlantic. Each one of us has salt in our veins, And that white Captain's hat belongs on each of our heads. Earing an Iron cross gains respect of us all. We all share our mistakes. And rather unique is that we have a tendancy to respect and help each other. Most gaming communities insult and look down on new or lesser players. Here we encourage everyone to experience Silent Hunter III to the fullest, And offer our collective wisdom to help our comrades get the most tonnage to their credit.

So, Will I still be playing Silent Hunter III 5 years from now? Count on it. Sure I'll indulge in Silent Hunter IV some, surely newer releases. But I doubt the same impact that the ground breaking Silent Hunter III will be felt again for a good long time.

Silent Hunter III has earned that place in my heart. I hope it has done the same for some of you as well.

I played AOD from mid '90 until April 2005..... I did NOT care about current games or else, I had a look at SH2: nice but not AOD.....
SH3/GWX will suffer from my stubborn refusal to move to "modern" works up until in 10 years there will be someone to work on it for real!

Yes, mate, you said it! I purchased a second SHIII DVD for the eventuality of my first one wearing out. Now I'm thinking I need a backup copy for my backup copy. (Pretty cheap, as far as it goes) Obviously, I am planning on playing a looooong time. Now, I find myself on this forum almost as much as I am searching for convoys. The modding community is what has really made this game a living breathing thing. I salute our Modders!

Well said indeed, there are but a few games that I feel that strongly about.

Sometimes I am still surprised that others play them too, if that makes any sense, because they feel so much like MY games :doh:

As for the modders accompanying these great three, well, they are simply GRAND!

sh3 is without doubt (in my mind) the best game ive ever had the pleasure of playing. Sure i also get a buzz out of call of duty or brothers in arms, but something keeps dragging me back to my type VII B!!. its sad to say but sometimes i just knock the time compression down to 1 and stand on lookout on deck and admire the awesome scenery, the sea and sky (thanks to mods) are the most realistic ive seen in a game-brilliant!. that calm is later replaced by heart thudding terror as those charges are dropped around your boat!! it doesnt get any better than this. ive only recently joined this community and find everyone very helpfull, its good to know there are other people enjoying this classic as mutch as i am. :up:

The only thing that will replace SH3 on my computer is an improved version with SH4-style graphics and crew management.

I have found that SH3 is one of the best mod supported game that I have come across in a while. The only game that comes close that I can think of is Total Annihilation, and even that is still going! So its looking like SH3 won't be leaving my computer for a while.
