View Full Version : Saw my first German U-Boat today.
U15 (S194) was coming alongside at Plymouth today when I was leaving one of our boats. It's very strange looking (for someone that's used to UK designed boats) - good to see one up close
and if you think, a usual submarine is leaving little comfort and privacy for the crew, then get a look inside a class 206a. :ahoy:
23 crew members and in peace operations they often use one of the torpedo tubes to store stuff for the comfort of it.
That will be the major difference, I think

U15 is a Type 206A. 11 boats of the original 206 class were upgraded to 206A, while 7 remained to be "simple" 206ers. the class in is the process of being phased out since roughly ten years. Most of them are not being replaced (by the new 212).
The slightly bigger type 209 was built for export exclusively, and never was operated by the German Navy - I wonder how they found any customers for that reason...!?
Did you start yelling 'Thompson! Das ist Thompson!'. I'm fairly certain I wouldn't have been able to resist:rotfl:
Mind you, both my wife and I often pick up a couple of jars or bottles in the supermarket and put them to our eyes like binoculars and do that sort of thing.
:D Chock

No - afraid not, but I gave the crew that were on the jetty a cheery 'Guten Morgen' as I passed them a bit later.

That was my point :D. Just wanted to set focus on the inside for someone more used to those bigger "other-nation" subs with far beyond 1500 tons..

Mein Fehler - ich habe das völlig in den falschen Hals gekriegt, vom Ton her.
