Hello, I did some re-search and i found on http://uboat.net/flotillas/7flo.htm that U-96 was in the 7.Unterseesbootsflottille and not in de 9.Unterseesbootsflottile, but the emblem for the 9.Unterseesbootsflottile is the laughing little swordfish, wich is seen on every photo of U-96, but the emblem for the 7.Unterseesbootsflottille is very diffrent. So was U-96 in the 7.Unterseesbootsflottille or the 9.Unterseesbootsflottille

Many emblems were used by different boats and crews. The laughing swordfish was used on several boats, but did not necessarily mean they were in the 9th flotilla. Similarly, many 9th flotilla boats did not display the laughing swordfish, but used other emblems instead (nothing says a boat had to show the flotilla emblem - conning tower emblems were pretty much a captian/crew decision, and many popular emblems got re-used a lot).

U-96 was with the 7th flotilla during the fighting part of her career. Actually, Lehmann-Willenbrock used the emblem for the 9th after he assumed command of the flotilla, but it had already previously been the conning tower emblem of U-96 under his command (I guess he figured it had borught him luck for 8 patrols in U-96, so maybe the emblem would bring luck to his new command).

I've seen other pics with two emblems on a boat. One will be the flotilla emblem, and one will be the boat's personal emblem. Several boats, for example, used the upside down horseshoe at one time or another. You can find pics of the same boat with different emblems at different times, as the commanding officer's rotated out, the new commander might change the emblem to one of his choosing.
