Actually, October 14th 1944 (OOPS 1939). Günther Prein in U-47 made his incredible raid on Scapa Flow sinking the British battleship HMS Royal Oak.

That was an extremely difficult U-boat mission. I would have loved to been able to see the tension, attitude of the officers whilst this U-boat crept through the harbour defences.

As much as the Scapa Flow raid earned him a place in history. I'm not very fond of Prien. Reading about his personal quirks, it's a wonder how his crew never mutinied against him.
