Hi,
I noticed awhile ago there were people who had found non star force versions of SHIII for sale.
Are any of these still around? Especially companies that will ship overseas.
I can buy SHIII very cheap in Australia now, but I would be prepared to pay full price again to get a clean version.
Cheers MarkL
Starforce is the reason I completely skipped SH3.
I tried a patch to remove Starforce, but something is still up as the game tries to contact a company known as "Safenet Inc" while you are playing. My firewall blocked it. I formatted my HD afterwards and never installed SH again.
Starforce doesn't stop piracy, and just stops people from buying the game. I'm glad Ubisoft came their senses and got rid of it. However, I'm disappointed that titles that were released with Starforce still contain it.
I dont think the Direct2Drive version has starforce, as there wouldnt be a CD for you anyway. Granted, you run into issues that way, but its an option at least.
If my memory servers and the Direct2Drive hasn't been changed since release, it does contain starforce.

Yes, the Direct2Drive version contains starforce. I had to uninstall then reinstall in preparation for GWX 2 and when i went to activate SHIII it wouldn't accept it. I tried everything and it kept saying my CD Key didn't exist (it is the same key i used for the initial install and got from D2D). It took me an hour of digging online and finally i found a patch that came out last year from Starforce to fix this issue. Once installed it worked fine, but Starforce is the worst crap i've ever ran into, especially since I purchased this game. Next time i think i'll just buy it on DVD and maybe not have such a hassle, but i thought this way would be nicer in that i could burn the .exe and some addons to one DVD and have it all together.. guess you learn the hard way sometimes.

Hey, I didn't link anything, I didn't name anything, I just said "search web" with no explicit name, information whatsoever. Did I even mention something? :nope:
But well, no big deal. I'm a humble user of this great board and I'll shut up now :p

UPDATE:
I got this email from Direct2Drive today:
"Hi there,
Thank you for contacting us. We have currently removed the StarForce activation from this title. This means that you will need to re-download the game. Once you have the game downloaded - simply install and play!

Great news for those of us who bought it from them. I'll be grabbing that overnight tonight.

That is good news. It may also gain them a few sales if promoted.
A question though, with Direct2Drive games do they generally need activation or just use serial numbers?
Also does this mean that the Direct2Drive version SHIII has no copy protection at all now?
Cheers MarkL
No idea on that.. but I think it still needs a CD Key, which I got from them when I purchased it. I'm going to re-download it and try an install on my laptop and see what happens.

I was planning to reinstall SH3 to get GWX 2 but was dreading SF since I have a new DVDR drive...
Seeing this thread I just bought and downloaded the D2D version and it is in fact pre-patched to 1.4 and does not install Starforce !! (Yea) - confirmed with the official removal tool from starforce.com.
It is the EMEA version however - even though the site lists it as US version.
The version I recently bought from Amazon doesn't have the SF drivers. I think that is only the earlier editions. But I don't know if this is so for all versions.
