Hi
Just a quick post - sunk a destroyer off Singapore (manual targeting - very nice!) and it was going East to West and then back again patrolling the entrance to a harbour.
Only thing is, when it got to one end of its course, instead of turning around, it just stopped and came back in the other direction i.e. it was travelling in reverse for about 20nm!
I think this must be a bug - it's not meant to do that right?

"Hey, Hoshi, the captain wants us to back up the whole way again!"
"Well, he's the captain. Just do it, and don't ask questions."

It's a German secret weapon. You're not meant to see it.

Just some weird AI behavior it sounds like. You did the right thing....sink it!
We have experienced this behavior of patrol craft @ Rabal, also Turk:shifty: Thinking it has something to do w/scripting campaign layers,Per point to point.you would think the IJN-meatballs, could turn a ship around though.:rotfl:

I've seen this too with a sub chaser patroling the Sunda Stait. You can just imagine the scene when the skipper reports back to his commander to report why his engines have been worn out through all that reversing....'well you did say backwards and forwards sir'!

I have seen this before pleanty of times. In fact, I once sunk three IJN carriers that were going back and forth in some harbor (somewhere in the East China Sea).

The question is.. do they continue to go backwards if they see you and start chasing? Also, how fast are they able to go in reverse? :P

Oh, they'll have a go at ya' if they detect you. They also occasionally fail to go to reverse fast enough, collide witht the shore, and sink and burn there (eg. straits on the way into Osaka).

Well, hopefully next time the captain bows the rotor! Explain that to the Admiral! I'm sure the engineers on the ship that monkey sunk were screaming at the bridge. In all simplicity, When a backing bell is rung up you have to keep a close eye on your temperatures. Three Point Checks are a must! You have to check your HP Turbine RPI, LP Turbine RPI, (RPI= Rotor Position Indicator) Sight flows and bearing temps. Now if they did bow the rotor (depending on how bad it is, if its real bad then they will be SOL and have to go in for extensive repairs) the situation can be remedied, but takes time, hence probably why some of those ships you see with crappy captains stop....well, tis a game, but who really knows what the AI is doing. Maybe the engineering AI really does care, maybe they are like a secret society in the game or something.....just dont let them board your boat!! Bunch of angry engineers running around your boat is just bad news. As far as speed goes, the engine RPM's are set by the manufacturer and a placard will be posted on the throttle board. Don't know what kind of setup was on the japanese Tin cans, did it have an HP & LP Turbine, or HP, MP, & LP Turbine set up? And then more info must be known....am I getting to in depth?.....I think I am. So......yeah.......mmm.....the ship in reverse will run at lower rpms and therefore be slower in reverse:D.
