View Full Version : Star Wars games - Which one's best?
Which SW game do you find to be the best one out there?
As a fan of Final Fantasy, I found the KOTORs to be my favorite ones. A very close second place holder is the Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy A.K.A. Jedi Knight 3 (or 2, cant remember).

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance is one of the best. Old though.

Depends on the gendre (fps, rpg, sim)
My all time favorites (Dont ask me to pick one) have to be jedi knight 2 & acadamy, and the old classic Tie Fighter (imho the best of the bunch for immersion tho XWA though XWA and X-Wing are right behind it).
I honestly didnt care much for KOTOR, wasnt my kind of rpg.
There is a new Star Wars mod for Battlefield 21-something, and it looks good. (not that I am buying the game for that, but if you have it)

The first Kotor, the second was a half finished hack job unfortunately. ;)
I liked Kotor because Bioware was great in recapturing the spirit of the original Star Wars even though the history in Kotor goes back some millenia with respect to the events in SW.
I also like X-Wing Alliance and Rebel Assault.

My favorite has always been Star Wars Rebellion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Rebellion
and the Original Star Wars Galaxies (Pre-Combat Upgrade)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Galaxies
followed by Star Wars: Empire at War (which was based off Rebellion)

I also liked the old Star Wars Arcade game. There is emulator for it so you can play it on the PC.

I still find #3 the best. #4 forced you to use 3rd person perspective when using the light sabre.

Ok, well I'm talking about the one in 3rd person. Tho, IIRC there's a mod to make it 1st person. Should try it. :hmm:

TIE Fighter by far. Splendid dialogue, varied missions, believable plots, good gameplay, everything. And above all an incredible atmosphere.
The mod for Battlefield 2142 is called First Strike (http://www.firststrikemod.com/) and is not bad at all, and certainly better than the Battlefront series. I actually bought the game just for that mod (or rather, got it for my birthday) and haven't regretted it so far.
Galactic Battlegrounds was fairly good, too, I was one of the relatively few people who actually loved it. Didn't see the point of the expansion pack, though.
I recommend avoiding Force Commander, and Rogue Squadron attention to movie accuracy is important to you. And the last title, while fun, got silly and strange beyond belief.

That would have made it so much better. It was fun though - the massive light sabre battles. That was as prevelent in #3.

From the ones I have seen or played my favourite is "X-Wing vs Tie Fighter" + it's addon "Balance of Power".
"Jedi Knight" and its sequel "Jedi Knight 2" are also very entertaining although I never completed either of them.
Does anybody know if there is a website which is dedicated to Star Wars games? I wonder if there are any mods for X-Wing vs Tie Fighter...

I liked Jedi Academy better than KOTOR 1 or 2. Don't get me wrong though, I liked KOTOR a lot! ...and would happily purchase a third. Something about controlling the light saber action was just very empowering. I'm probably gonna buy a 360 just so I can play Force Unleashed when it makes its appearance early next year.
Empire at War and the Forces of Corruption expansion are both great! ...and I didn't care too much for that other attempt at a star wars RTS using the AOE engine. Hey, I gotta an idea! Let's make R2-D2 a farmer! :shifty:
Seriously though, I think Empire at War ranks right up there with the best of the best RTS games, and the mix of space and land battle was done surprisingly well and actually stands out as unique in the genre I think :yep:.
Battlefront 1 & 2... eh, I can take em or leave em. I'm not the huge FPS fan. (Which is why I was a little surprised that I liked Jedi Acadmy so much.)
I liked the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series back in the day... but we seem to be long overdue for a good update to those I think.

My favorite was the original X-Wing (and maybe the original Tie Fighter). I LOVED using the mission editors to build really silly campagns for Xwing.

It would have to be X-Wing Collectors CD-ROM it was one of my first games for my first computer along with Aces of the Deep.
I see that no one has mentioned it but I really enjoyed Rebel Assault back in the day. (the first one not the II which was pretty weak)

Kotor 1 & 2. X wing v Tie fighter was a good multiplayer game back in the days.
Does anyone have the Star Wars (Warlords) mod for Homeworld 2?
I am trying to buy Homeworld 2 just because of this mod :D
My only concern is the size and some kind of wacky flying behaviour of the smaller fighters; in the Homeworld 1 mod the fighters are very tiny and can only be recognized when completely zoomed in.

Uhhh... did you just say Star Wars mod for Homeworld! :o
I'm gonna have to look into that one myself!
I've got HW2 still in the plastic wrapper... I buy these games and they just sit on my shelf. I don't even have time to play em.
Games I own and have not yet had the time to play: :nope:
Homeworld 2
Battlefield 2142
Medievel Total War
Rome Total War
Star Trek Legacy
Sim City 4
Sub Command
Dangerous Waters
So which of the above should I make an effort on this weekend?

And just send me that Homeworld 2 copy of yours, I'll use it ;)
I have heared about the Star Wars mod for HW2 that it has the complete tech tree unlocked, so there is no research as in stock HW. Also the ships are not balanced and categorized rock-paper-scissor wise.
So it is more of a Star Wars simulation using HW 2 engine as a base. I've seen someone claiming it to be a Star Wars game more than a modification for Homeworld 2

Alright, that settles it, I'm taken the wrapper off HW2 this weekend!
I'm really curious now... Empire has the Death Star... makes sense to use that for a Mothership.
What would the mothership be for the rebels... a planet? I guess one of those big Mon Calamari vessels would do, but I don't think they have anything to the scale of a Death Star.
Hmmm... claiming to be a Star Wars game more than a mod... I guess it was that time between episode 3 & 4 when the Rebels and Empire were frantically searching for asteroids to mine. :rotfl:
You mustn't think low scaled, have a look at this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC3OoBSgFYs) (there are some more on youtube).
There seem to be loads of vessels in this mod, most of them are a mystery to me as I am only familiar with about the vessels that appeared in X Wing VS Tie Fighter

Sounds like they lifted some sounds from Empire at War...
I have reinstalled X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, does anyone who has it two fancy playing some multiplayer? I never tried that game in mulitplayer (I am not even sure if it works as it is a Win95 game...) and single player missions are quite frustrating for me now.
So if anyone is interested in some X vs Tie coop or so feel free to contact me...

My experience with Sw games is limited to the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series and the Xwing sims - I missed "KOTOR", "Rogue Squadron", "Rebel Assault" (which I heard bad things about - although if you know somebody with a mother-huge screen, it's incredible even to watch) & "Yoda's Stories". So for me, it all comes down to my favorite ed. of either series.
For space combat, it's hard to beat the "newest" game - so it's an easy win for "X Wing Alliance".
For shooters, it's a dicier proposition. Obviously, the QIII engine used in Outcast & Academy blow the pants off the one used in the original JK. Because it was new, however, and so utterly advanced over anything else I'd seen done on my PC (in 1997, anyway), the 1st JK has left an impression that can't be surpassed simply by better technology. I remember waiting a whole night to download the JK demo (dialup:damn: ) and then playing that one level for about a year....until I picked up a special ed. of "Dark Forces" that came with, you guessed it, another demo for JK. Having been spoiled by JK's stereo sound and (then) 3-D graphics, I could barely bring myself to complete DF. Eventually I got the full version of JK (which came with a copy of "Mysteries of the Sith") - that was 7 years ago, and I still play it.
Outcast & Academy are easily more advanced games, but it's hard to get past the feeling that they're no more than just improvements of the 1st game. In terms of gameplay, it's no contest - the QIII engine brings out the epic quality of lightsaber battles and force matches. In large pitched battles between darm and good Jedi, you're almost tempted to sit back and watch the action. Unfortunately, the storytelling has definately lost its quality. The older game had these FMV scenes to drive the story, and I think I was the only one who liked them (hammy acting? has anybody here actually watched one of the newer SW movies?) Using the in-game engine didn't help things out. Another problem is that Outcast & Academy are polar opposites in terms of game length: I spent about a month on Outcast - it had many levels, and they were generally long ones; Academy had shorter levels, and it felt like there were fewer of them.

If your going to play X-wing Alliance then I heartily recommend visiting www.xwaupgrade.com (http://www.xwaupgrade.com)
They are slowly replacing all the original low poly models with awesome high poly versions.
They've done quite a few of them and it is well worth downloading them.
Question regarding X-wing alliance: is the multiplayer more "user-friendly" than X-wing vs Tie fighter's ?
For the past weeks I have tried with a friend to play XvsTie online but it won't work, is X wing alliance more compatible with Windows XP networking?

Get Dangerous Waters loaded up !!! What are you waiting for !?! And make sure you patch it up to the latest version and then put the LWAMI mod into it. It'll keep you occupied all weekend and you may not leave your computer at all for the whole time !:yep:

Obsidian is supposedly working on KOTOR 3,which from what I've heard Revan will be in... possibly as an NPC. KOTOR was originally intended to be a three parter so that's not that big of a surprise.
The big thing is the rumors that Bioware is doing a KOTOR MMORPG. Considering that Bioware just signed a major deal with Lucas Arts, that SOE has no plans for an expansion for Star Wars Galaxies at this time, that these rumors have been going on for at least the last two years, that Bioware has recently signed a deal with a company whose name I don't remember for on-line server equipment and that Bioware has never denied the rumors, but has stated that they ARE working on an untitled MMORPG,it looks like there is at least a possibility that the rumors of a KOTOR MMORPG are true.
Considering Bioware's track record,if they indeed do a KOTOR MMORPG it could end up being second biggest MMORPG out there.(I don't think ANY MMORPG will ever knock WoW out of the top spot). It could also end up being the final blow to Star Wars Galaxies. But then that game has been going downhill since they introduced the NGE.

I also liked KOTOR 1/2 and Empire at War tremendously as well.
I liked Empire at War and how it mixed ground battles and space battles.
