Ahoy kaleuns!

This is my introductory post. I've been browsing the Radio room for a few weeks now, just want to say a few things:

-I've been playing SHIII for a little while, great game, no doubt! But I use to play only single missions, never tried a career. I uninstalled/reinstalled a few times. Then I did a clean reinstall and added GWX and...yeah. Got sucked right into it:yep:. Amazing stuff, I'm hooked. The forums have been an invaluable source for information, what mods to get, how to use them, I discovered great add-ons like JSGME and SH3Commander that really improved the experience for me.

-I've been so far very impressed by the quality of the people here. Those of you who browse other forums, especially gaming ones, know how obnoxious people can get when posting anonymously on the net. I love the level of maturity I see here, congrats on a well-run ship!

-A bit about how I play (I like browsing threads about tips and people comparing their gamestyles, it helped fine-tune my game): I have started a few careers so far, I like to start from September 39. So far I'm a Type VII guy, love Doenitz' boat, great combination of agility and endurance. I've tried the other types in single missions, I'm going to transfer to a Type IX flotilla sometime soon though, go and explore the East coast and Africa (GWX really expanded the horizons for long-range patrols I find). I play on high realism, I do confess I keep the external cam for the eye candy, as well as auto TDC and map updates. I'm gonna try to figure out manual TDC eventually...My usual stomping grounds are the north Atlantic and around the British isles.

-I'm very interested in U-boot history, Das Boot is of course one of my favorite movies...SHIII really struck a chord with me, and add-ons like GWX really help increase the immersion factor of the game.

Well, that's it for the status report, again congrats on the quality of the posts and hats off to the modders and other community members who devote time to enhance the experience for everyone!

First, welcome aboard!

It becomes more than just a game if you get involved in the history aspect of WWII.

I collect books and DVDs on u-boat warfare, the Kriegmarine, Battle of the Atlantic, etc. I began buying new paperbacks which was a big mistake. If you're careful you can buy hardcover first or early editions for less than new paperbacks and they'll always be worth more money when you want to sell them. You can find tons of titles on Amazon.

Clay Blair's Hitler's U-boat War, The Hunters 1939 - 1942 and Hitler's U-boat War, The Hunted 1942 - 1945 are pretty much the reference source for this game. Pretty dry reading but factual.

All books by the German Navy historian Jac P. Mallmann Showell are a must have for me. This author's dad was a u-boat petty officer who died at sea.

But, my favorite books are those written by U-boat Commanders or Sailors; Iron Coffins; Hirschfeld, the Story of a U-boat NCO; Steal Boat, Iron Hearts; Teddy Suhren, Ace of Aces to name a few.
