First things first. The new start menu? It sucks, a lot. The new Windows Explorer? Let me put it this way: XP’s explorer is like having a nice neat desk to work with, I can stretch my arms and I can rest my elbows. Vista’s explorer is like being limited to a tiny work space surrounded by clutter. Staplers, pens, pencils, watch out for the scissors! You can work with it, sure, but why bother? Clean your frigging desk. It sucks. And CTRL+ALT+DEL? It doesn’t open the Task Manager automatically anymore, instead it takes you to a screen where you must select what you want to do, with that option being the last on the list. Oh, Windows, why don’t you take a guess?! Maybe I want to do what I have been doing with those three keys for years in XP, perhaps, by a small chance, no? Not if they think that option deserves the bottom of the list. Brilliant! I seriously expect to find an option somewhere to disable this feature and give me the damn Task Manager automatically.

Anyway, on to business. I had to buy a laptop for work, and as you may have already guessed, unlike windows which can’t guess what I want to do with CTRL+ALT+DEL, it came with Vista installed. When I mentioned I’d just format it and put XP on it the BestBuy lady strongly advised me not to because I wouldn’t find drivers for some of the hardware. Brilliant! This is the strategy of a genius: people don’t want to move to Vista because their stuff isn’t compatible with Vista, only with XP. No problem! Let’s make stuff that is incompatible with XP and only compatible with Vista! Now this is what I call an inversion of the reality! Hats off. The thing is I bought a laptop with only 1 gig of ram because I just needed it for Office and some internet stuff. Sure I could get the occasional slow-down on monster Word files, but it should've sufficed most of the time.

WRONG! This Desktop computer with Windows XP is consuming 220 megs of ram, almost idle, with Avast, Word 2003, and IE7 running. My laptop when actually idle (minus Avast) eats up 650 megs of ram. This is absolutely insane! What the hell is eating up 600 megs?! I found out some Windows Desktop Manager thingie, something related to the Windows Aero theme, is the greatest culprit of the Task Manager’s list. But there’s still a bunch of megs disappearing in thin air. I don’t have a clue. Is it the rest of Vista?

I have to wonder if there’s anyone out there who actually thinks it’s a good idea to install a system hog in a laptop. Why? Just give me the Mobile edition, something that doesn’t eat half my system and forces me to buy more ram. I hope, at least, that memory usage doesn’t contribute too much to battery drainage.

Before I just felt no need to move to Vista. Now that I was forced to with this laptop, I can say: Vista sucks all our balls combined. The day we can no longer cling to XP and have no choice but moving on to Vista will be a very sad day. Enjoy your Start Menu while you can!

Memory usage does affect battery drainage, but to a very small degree.

I highly doubt you wouldn't be able to find XP drivers for everything on that laptop.

By the way, when you find that 650 MB, let me know. I have 690 MB lost in space as I type this, and I have email and this Firefox window open.

A couple suggestions - turn off the UAC control. Its annoying as hell and worthless. #2 - change what happens when you hit the power bottons. I hate hibernating laptops when I really want it to be fully powered off. My one laptop that I have Vista on has all the buttons change.

You can change what those buttons do via the screen saver panel (Why here? Dunno. Ask MS).

Vista is a bloated pig. I still hate it after all this time.

I'm still a proponent of Vista. As far as the Start menu is concerned, things change...XP's was radically different from 98's. When XP first came out, the memory usage was far higher as well. On a decently powerful system, Vista is an awesome OS. Good looking, stable, and decently fast. I think that most concerns will be remedied as laptops become progressively more powerful and as Vista itself becomes more refined.

Brilliant!

I'm sorry, I just can't help thinking of the guys from the Guiness Beer commercials...Brilliant!

I have been using win 95, 98, xp and now vista because my pc is broken and I must say:windows vista sucks ass.I would'nt compare vista with XP-the "address group" is different for both of them.Vista is so "multimedia stuffed" that after a few finger moves on the touch pad you get everything opened or closed.I tried to change icon-no way!You have to run safe mode on admin.acc or sth like this.Uninstalling the modem?Another pain in the neck.Safe mode and so on.I could agree with this statement:Vista is perfect for a particular group of users but it cannot replace xp(which is so "gosu" stable in comparison to win 98).
