I started a new campaign, a photo recon mission in Manila for some carriers. I sailed 20 miles out, snapped the pictures and then headed back to base. Only to be awarded a medal and then put on the Admiral's staff and ending my career.
Wtf?? What happend to the "Patrol this grid here for 24 hours" and then freehunt???
What did I do wrong?? I completed the primary objective of taking the photo, and still i got sacked after my first patrol. lol

It doesn't work that way in SHIV. As in real life, you are expected to follow orders. When you complete a mission, radio in a status report and you'll recieve a new mission. Once that's completed, radio in and recieve another new one. Once you're low on fuel or torpedoes and ready to head for the barn, quit radioing in status reports and complete your current mission. Simple as that. If you try and go rogue, you WILL be retired out early.

And because I didn't i got cashierd onto making coffee for some pokey nosed admiral on his staff??? grrrrr!!!

Not only do you have to radio in a status report but you must do it within a certain distance of where you completed your mission. I got the "insert spy in Dalian" mission several times in a row, right after I posted that I never got repeat missions.:yep: "WTF!!!" said I, meaning "Why that's funny" of course. Then I read that when you sight enemy ships, to get a reply you have to call in within sight of the ships.
I thought "The life raft is a ship." When I launch it I might have to phone home while I'm in sight of it. I did and the repeat missions stopped. I received immediate confirmation and a new mission. As a bonus, you might be attacked by more of those Betties you like so much.

Nope. Patch 1.3 removed rafts, lifeboats, sampans, and fishing boats from showing up on sonar or radar.

I know it was I waqs just joking abut that. I always found it funny when your sonar man would report a contact. You would go to investigate and its a SamPan... :-?

Gonna hijack this thread as it's right up the right alley for my question (by the way.. I didn't know about reporting your status after you've done a recon mission or whatever.. was wondering why this is my third recon mission in a row.. haha).
If you get a new mission and it says to patrol around Iowa Jima (or however you spell it.. sorry! :hmm: ) and sink merchants.. do you need to stay there for 24 hours or something before reporting in to get anothe mission? What do they consider 'around' to be? Within 50 NM's of the island or something?

Zoom right in on your patrol star in the navmap . Then use your compass and make a 50nm circle and then stay inside that . Easy hey .

So it is 50nm? I was only taking a guess at it.. it hasn't told me exactly how close to IJ I have to stay.

See the yellow star? stay within 50nm of that star for 24hrs. you might have to change your zoom a little so the star turns grey

I make a 60nm radius around the symbol and it works just fine. I think the TM mod raised it to about 90 or 100nm - I've been using 90 on it.

The only reason I'm commenting is that I did some experiments just for fun to see what the minimum amount of work is necessary to satisfy the AI.
For the experiment I never radioed a status report; only completing the original objective and SH4 didn't seem to care. Once, the mission was a photo recon (only), another was to insert commando's, most were Deploy or Patrol missions where I did the grid for 48 hrs and 'freehunted'. I received awards & upgrades, a new command of a Gato class, and was never retired.

My patrol started from Pearl, got the insert agent mission and completed. Sent status rpt, ordered to patrol E China.then the Luzon St. ... 3 times. Somewhere I thought I was told my base was changed to Surabaya. So I completed the 5th mission, radioed status report and - nothing. No new orders or even a RTB. So I made my way all the way down to Java and at the dock I get Rearm/refuel but no end mission. There's no way I could have made it all the way back to PH anyway. I was out of torpedos so I couldn't sink anymore ships. What's wrong?

That's what I did. Back in port now. Thanks.
BTW, it looks like the patch will fix that bug. Thanks Dev team.
