View Full Version : Strange problem
My game 1.3 with TM 1.6,GFX and TM1.6 patch plays for about 30 minutes and then the screen goes all green and I can hear the game running but all I can see is a green screen. Its not heat the room is air conditioned and I have no problems with any other games..Any ideas?

The room being air conditioned doesn't necessarily mean the VPU isn't overheating.
I keep my house like the arctic and my X1950 still pushes the celcius boundaries.
It certainly could be something else, but repeated time delayed image failure is usually overheating of the VPU, imo.

If so why does it only do it with SH4?

Well, the only answer to that would be that SH4, with GFX enhancements and your settings, is more demanding than the other games you are playing, whatever they are.
I will say that if SH4 is the only game doing this, that does lower the odds of overheating; but the symptoms, especially the time delay, are still symptoms of overheating.
Usuallly though, you will not suddenly just go black/green. As the card starts to heat, you will get artifacting and other strange glitches on the screen before it finally goes out.
Not sure what to say, just offering the only idea I could think of. Try putting in another game that you're certain is as graphically demanding. Crank all the settings ingame, and in your driver, to max, and let it run for 1/2 an hour, and see if it does it then too.

It doesent really sound to me like a heat issue more like a driver issue but Im sure ClayP keeps his video drivers up to date.
You dident mention the age of the machine but you might want to knock open the case and check the heat sinks for the cpu and gpu to make sure they arent plugged with dust. If they are vacum them clean. Oh yea make sure all the fans are spinning like they should as well.
Also you might want to try re-seating that video card see if you dont have a flakey connection.
Yes SH4 is very demanding on the video card even more so than some contemporary games supprisingly. I guessing it has something to do with rendering the water.

I belive that il2FB's and WWIIOnline are as demanding and I can play them all day..And you are correct there is no artifacting just is fine one second and then green...

Steamwake the case is one of the best CoolerMaster makes there are six huge cooling fans and one exhust. The side is a mesh grill and has 2 12" fans blowing in and another 12 incher blowing in the front and the room is kept at 60 degrees. The whole system is less then six months old....

Here lemme clean this up a little no need to splatter my profile in the open forums ;) No one cares :p
I belive that il2FB's and WWIIOnline are as demanding ....
Nope sorry not even close I can run IL2 at 'perfect' resolution without a hiccup. My ATI 1800 barely even spools up its cooling fan after hours of play.
SH4 I have to turn down some settings and still get the occasional stutter. And the cooling fan often spools up.
Also you might want to try re-seating that video card see if you dont have a flakey connection.....
I know that sounds silly but give it a try.

Well I did say it dident really sound like a heat issue. Still even if your machine is brand spanking new check for driver updates.

I found out that the fan stoped running on one of my video card's and was over heating big time. I ended up having to get Nvidia to send me a new video card ASAP especialy since they were brand new.
Check and see if there is a lot of dust build up on the card and vacume it off if there is. Of course with the PC off and unpluged and use a soft brush on the vacume or use one of those AIR cans to blow it off.

I have tried most of the suggestions,I dont have another game to try..I just have il2,COD2,WWIIOL and SH4..I'll look at the card Monday, its REALLY hard for me to get down on the floor and mess with it....I have the one older driver on the card, didnt like the newest one...I still cant belive there is something wrong with the card and it dosent show up in any other game...

Is the software overclocking the card. My ati card can be overclocked using software, once while trying it out I triped the safty and it throttled back the card something similar happend to me that is happening to you.
So check the software make sure your not overclocking the card or make sure your not tripping the safty and making your card throttle down
I have tried most of the suggestions <snip>
Well, let me throw one more at you. Open the case, point a common house fan right at the guts - full blast - and play the game. If the problem does not recur, it's prolly a heat issue. Note that just opening the case will not suffice. Use the fan, Clay.
Now if the problem does recur with the case open and the fan blasting, my next guess would be your video card... may be defective.
That said, my third guess - your power supply - may be easier to troubleshoot. Unless you have access to a spare video card exactly like the one you're using now, swapping it out will also mean a driver change (or reconfiguration) and a host of other variables that will make it difficult to tell what's changed and what caused it. Swapping out the power supply, on the other hand, is straight forward. All you need to watch out for is that it's big enough.
Keep in mind that you do not have to completely rip yours out and install another one. Just unplug the power to your main board and the video card itself (if applicable) and plug in the new (test) unit along side the existing (you'll need them both on). If the problem goes away, then you can start ripping things apart.
;)

I just want to confirm that you tried this.
It's the simplest check to do, and won't require getting down on the floor messing with stuff.
If SH4 does not crash (green screen) with the graphics settings turned down to minimum (in the game options, AND in your driver control panel on your PC), then the problem is an overdriven/overheated card.
PS: I just noticed it's a 8800 ultra. SH4 shouldn't be a problem for it, imo. And if it's only with SH4, perhaps there's an issue with a particular graphics file that is corrupted. Is there any particular event or screen that occurs before it crashes to green? Try to run the vanilla game with no mods, and if needed, a fresh install as well.

Ya know electronics espically solid state components are funny.
They either fail right away or last forever.
Did you try the re-seating of the card as I had suggested ?
I got a brand new computer once and the cards had got knocked loose during shipping.
I REALLY appreciate all of the ideas and the input guy's...The thing that really baffles is why does it only do it in this game..All of the ideas put forth in my estimation should affect all games..Am I right or wrong in this belief?I have taken today off because I really dont feel well...Tomorrow I'm going to re-install the game with no mods and try it...

I hope that works out for you. I would not be supprised at all if you have some mod conflict.
You mentioned earlier that you rolled back your drivers... did you do a full un-install of the previous drivers first ?
But honestly SH4 even without mods is one of the most taxing games you can play on your pc and I play alot of different games (its sort of my job). But given your machine description you should be able to run the game pretty well.
FSX, Oblivion, IL2, Call of duty, Falcon 4, GRAW, and on and on.. frankly none of them can 'test' your system like SH4. I'm pretty sure it has to do with rendering all that water.
Good luck hope the re-install works. Maybe its as simple as a mod conflict.

Here's my thoughts on this:
Since you are using TM: Are you playing in the latter half of 1943? If so, check the last couple pages of the TM thread for Tater's campaign update that was causing crashes on my computer.
NVIDIA stupidly removed temperature monitoring from Forceware, but there is a "relatively easy" way to test if the temp is causing problems:
Try Nv Templogger (I haven't tried this one myself... but other recommend it) http://www.guru3d.com/article/nvtemplogger/294/1/
For one that I *KNOW* works (I use it all the time), try this:
Get Rivatuner http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner. You don't have to mess with clocks, just use it's awesome temperature monitoring abilities. Here's how... go the "Main" Tab. Under the make of your video card, click the little triangle next to "customize..." Then, click on the next-to-last button that should say "Hardware monitoring" when you mouse over. If the core temperature is not one of the default measurements, click on the Setup button in the lower corner, and you can checkmark core temperature in the setup screen. For a bit more, you can do this: http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/169335-rivatuner-temps.html
For a thorough discussion of how to use this (a lot is about overclocking, but the temperature and fan stuff is very useful), read this article: http://www.vaguesoft.com/users/dwood/blog/tutorials/rivatuner2/
If you have an Nforce mobo, you could use NTune instead: http://www.nvidia.com/object/ntune_5.05.47.00.html
BL: You don't want you video card to get above ~65*C (Some say 60, some say 70...)

Alright... Baby steps it is! The easiest to use is the first I mentioned NVTemplogger: Download this: http://www.guru3d.com/article/nvtemplogger/294/1/
Extract it wearever is convenient for you. Double click on NVTempLogger.exe in the Guru3d.com/setup folder that was extracted. You should see a big number somewhere in your upper right screen - this is your GPU temp. In your system tray, you'll see a new icon like this: http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/96f4710df62c4eea4a49e6fdd2e310072g.jpg (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=9yedm5jk3sz&thumb=4)
Right click that icon. Click Graph... then Show. You'll get this:
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/61154b2504ec098fd5ad65f75d2e2c2d2g.jpg (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=6jvgq9pyqxx&thumb=4)
Sorry for the bad fake "spike", but my temp was constant... Leave the graph open and play SH4 until it crashes. After the crash, alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete out to your desktop and check the graph. If there IS a spike like I showed OR the temp is hotter than 70*C (really has to be even hotter to cause crashes), then you have a cooling problem with your video card.
If you do have a cooling problem, a) avoid using your computer as much as possible til it's fixed to avoid causing damage to the card AND b) follow the suggestions others made earlier about how to fix it. If none of those work, c) check BFG forums for other ideas and/or their tech support to get a new one.
Try updateing or reinstalling your reative drvers. In the past they were known memory leakers that aused a lockup by hogging memory and not releasing...
Well guys I dont know what to say..I just played for an hour and 15 minutes without changeing a thing and it didnt miss a beat. Here is the temp log..

Peaked at 78. Mine gets to 78 and I keep my house like fridge.
You say it didn't crash this time. That's weird too. Same temp in your house as usual today?

Maybe installing the temperature monitor fixed your problem. :rotfl:

78's a little higher than I'd like mine to go, but it shouldn't cause a crash (based on my recent reading...). The card should throttle itself back to control temperature somwhere around 90-100. I'd say that temperature is PROBABLY not the problem. I'd keep logging it until you get a crash and check it after a crash.
Did you ever check what month/year it is in your game vs the campaign problem in TM (6-1-43 to 11-30-43)?

I'll hazard a guess and say that your video card is not overheating sufficiently to be the cause. I don't like to let mine get that warm, but it shouldn't cause a crash at 77... Hardware guy giving up :dead: and sending it back to software...

I'm going to try a re-install and if that dont fix it I'll just have to quit....I even turned the settings down by half on the card..
Well re-installed and patched to 1.3 no mods played for an hour and no crash
