August 18 1940, 602 Squadron were vectored to a raid by Ju87's of Stg 77 on Ford Airfield. Sgt Basil 'Ginger' Whall of A Flight, flying LO-G L1019, attacked and shot down a Ju87 belonging to Gruppe II forcing it to land behind Poling golf course. Flying back towards Westhampnett he latched onto Ju87's of GruppeIII, who had just attacked Poling RDF station.
Closing to 50yds he shot one, the wing tank rupturing as it went down, into the sea off the coast at Littlehampton. LO-G was hit by return fire and Sgt Whall made a wheels up landing on the shoreline at Bognor Regis. The drawing depicts the moments after SgtWhall hit the second Ju87 as he swoops past trailing smoke from the return fire.

That's really very nice indeed. quite atmospheric, I like it very much.

If you haven't finished messing with it yet, I have a suggestion though: If you swirl the smoke in a spiral from the Ju-87's plume as though the starboard wingtip vortex from the Spitfire has just passed through it, it would add to the feeling of the speed difference between the Stuka and the Spitfire. Might even get away with doing it with a putty rubber. I just did it quickly in Photoshop to give you an idea of whether it's worth risking trying it on your pencil sketch, wouldn't want you to mess it up!

I like the scetch-is it freehand, or had you some reference pics?
If it is from top of your head- i like it even more, and admire the line.
Good scale also.

I have just finished watercolour, but will not show...i dont think it is politicaly correct- especialy for forums.

Thanks for the comments...:)
Chock...love that idea, I had thought of it but didn't know quite how to pull it off. The client loves the drawing the way it is..so I don't think I'll mess round with it any more.

Siara...the drawing is free hand and the only ref I used was a screenshot of the Ju87 from Forgotten Battles...the rest was from me :)

Wow, that's really nicely done, I thought it might be tricky to do with the crosshatch sketching, but you've pulled it off a treat, I think it really does make the Spit more look like it's moving fast. Nice one.

I'd just like to comment that your work is tops. One suggestion: IMO, the 2 smoke clouds rising in the background near the top center are so dark as to be distracting.

Battle Of Britain; Spit Mk 1: No 20mm cannons; eight .303 machine guns only.

L1019 was one of the very first Spitfire Mark 1s - it was from the first ever batch of 310, ordered in June 1936 from Vickers Supermarine, and delivered June 1938. L1019 was from the second half of the batch, so it had a Merlin II fitted, which also means it definitely had no cannons on it at that time (very few Spitfires in the Battle of Britain had cannons, and those that did were withdrawn, owing to stoppages). Quite a lot of Spits from that first batch were later converted to Mark V standard by strengthening the longerons and sticking a Merlin 45 in them incidentally, so it is conceivable that if it was recovered and repaired following the forced landing, it could, just possibly, have had a wing fitted with cannons put on it at a later date. Although if it was recovered, it is far more likely to have gone to a training squadron, been canibalised, or have been used as an instructional airframe at an OTU.

If we were being pedantic, for a Mark 1 it is missing one very minor detail: the antenna wire from the horizontal stabiliser tips to the radio compartment, which should be visible if the one from the mast can be seen, but admittedly that's to be really picky.

Lol...now that is being picky { but I did leave it otu :) } L1019 was recovered and later converted to a MkVb { if the information I got was correct }

Excellent work! Couldn't help noticing that this is your second drawing of the day and you posted at Five p.m. Do you get up very early or are you the fastest draw in the west (of Scotland)?

Well, eight of them could be pretty devastating up close. Spit IIs got a variant with 2 cannon and 4 mg; Spit Vc supposedly could take 4 cannon; same with Spit IXc and e variants; but there is no photographic evidence of any of them carrying 4 cannons during the war.

What's really fun is the Hurricane IIb: 12 machine guns!

Oh, sorry to drift, 602Sqn_Puff, but I get excited sometimes. Your picture is lovely, of course; they always are.
