View Full Version : Should I obey BdU or not?

Hi, Kaleuns. I've got a question about a radio message. Now I've read in several threads that all these messages are for immersion, but now BdU still has managed to send me a message that has left me wondering. :hmm:

I'm on my 7th patrol of my GWX career and the message they've send me is 'port changed to Lorient'. It's send to 'my' u-boat, the U-108. The first time I got it was on 1 september 1940 and it was repeated 3 times, each time after I had reloaded a saved game. I've also received other messages after 1 september, but they are not repeated.

I don't know if this info helps but my current homeport is Wilhelmshaven and my U-108 is part of 2nd Flotilla. So, should I obey this BdU order and go to Lorient after my patrol?

Thanks.

Yes, that message is "real" ... your base is changed to Lorient, so head there when your patrol ends.

99% of the messages are there for immersion -- and, while I love GWX, I hope 1.04 will have a little less radio immersion -- but base changes, task force/convoy intel, and declarations of war are "real".

On a previous career, I got asked to head to another patrol zone (Had already completed my 24 hours at my scheduled zone), but it was on the other side of Great Brittan, and I'm in a Type IIb. Thing is, while I was heading back to friendlier lands for a resupply, I had the message repeated. Didn't get a chance to go out there due to problems with the game, but I'm not sure if this is a real one or not.

Hopefully there is the option to turn these kind of messages off with the next patch as each time you start a new career at Sept. 1939, you get a few dozen messages, mostly 'updates' on the war's progression that you already know off by heart.. :smug:

You should be able to see if your home port has changed on the loading screen, where it gives 'start from - name of port' and return to 'base - name of port'. I was transfered from Willhelmshaven to Lorient when I headed out in October '40.

But it would make some sense to go to Lorient anyway, because I'm currently hunting just west of Gibraltar and I'm running somewhat low on fuel. But I still have about half of my torpedos left. And I don't want to take the risk of running out of fuel in the middle of the North Sea.

Pop into that neutral port north west of Gib (I'm not on my home pc for the name). There's a supply ship in the harbour. :hmm:

Hey look at this:

I think in this case everything is ok and you should sail to Lorient.

But when I read your post I recall that I had more strange situation.
I selected 30th Flotilla on Nov 1942 with base in Constanza (Black Sea). After second patrol I created in SH3 Commander another career with St. Nazaire home base. In this career I had one patrol.
After that I decided to come back to my prev. career (30th Flotilla) and I selected it on SH3 Commander. I was very frustraded when "Base was changed to St. Nazaire" messege appeared on the screen.
In GWX man we can read that if you choose 30th Flotilla you will be automatically transfered to the 33th Flotilla at Flensburg (1 August, 1944) not to St. Nazaire!
I think in this case there was a bug...

Spruence M; Im working on the Radiolog eXpansion. It's about 60% complete currently with over 5000 radio messages. It will include everything in Radiolog_Final_2006 which has about 1900 messages but isn't very complete beyond `42. Was hoping to have a release by now but I kinda bit off more then I could chew and alot of IRL jazz going on. Which is why no [WIP] post either. Maybe before X-mas.

Huskalar; think of all those juicy convoys in BE :ping:

I like the "radio noise" very much. Even though I know in advance what messages I will get in the early day of Sept. '39, I find myself _ALWAYS_ making a stop in the radio room and reading messages about the ongoing war again and again and again. It gives a lot of atmosphere like the grammophone does.

It's again time to applaude to your fantastic work!!!!

Thanks lads. The decision to go to Lorient is final now. I've got only a couple of torpedos left and Lorient is the nearest port. Or at least nearer than Vigo or Wilhelmshaven. I'll let you guys know if BdU will let me stay there.

After arriving in Lorient, BdU immediately invited me to a welcoming party and afterwards they showed me a very nice chateau where I can stay the coming weeks. :|\\

Thanks again guys.
