This is why I like polls beacause they attract so much attention:)

2-3 years for me, but I never installed it for a year because of the scare stories surrounding Starforce. Took the plunge and installed it just over a year ago and wished I'd done it earlier. Having said that, when I did install it the Grey Wolves mod was available which improved the game instantly without the wait.

Got it as soon as it came out. I play with it for about 2-3 months and I got bored. Left it for quite some time and about 8-12 months later I started playing again. If I had not come accross GW1.1a at the time I would have throw it away. After I tried GW1.1a my life changed :yep: :arrgh!: Now I don't even remember what SH3 looks like ;)
Thought I dl/led a movie turned out to be SH3 installed it, played it for 1 hour Loved it. Got to bed, woke up bought a copy of the game. This happened in June or July.
Still loving it.

I was a Sub Command junkie...then put it away for a few years. Then a couple years ago, decided to re-install it and start getting my subsim fix again. I came here after not having read the boards here in years, where I discovered Dangerous Waters and Silent Hunter III. I read the reviews and naturally had to have both ! I've now been hapily playing them for about two years or so and I'm not showing any signs of stopping.
I have these games set up on the computer in my home music room/amature studio where I do a lot of work with synthisisers, and other instruments, as well as my latest hobby of circuit bending electronic toys, games, and keyboards. I love to run Silent Hunter III or Dangerous Waters (with all the autocrew on) at 1x while I'm working on other things in the room. When I hear my crew call something out, it pulls me right to the "Captain's Chair" to deal with whatever situation is going on.

I used to like playing a submarine game I found in the arcade at 10p a go whereby you looked through a periscope and sank the ships, this was many years ago somewhere around 1985.
Around 1992 I played Silent Service on a sytem called a Philips CDROM and I thought the graphics were brilliant! It had lighted ships and everything!!
Then I played it on an IBM PC and wasnt as good wahen it came to graphics but the gameplay was good for its day.
I also found a game like Gato but on the Sinclair spectrum!! My goodness that hard to play!
I got Silent Hunter in 1997 and it was just brilliant... Me and a friend stayed up hours plaing that till five in morning, work the next day was a pain!
Didnt get much into Silent Hunter 2 due to life commitments however when Silent Hunter 3 came along I was disapointed cos it wouldnt play on my laptop even with a radeon card in it! So a while later I built a computer from the ground up to play it... and I thought it great but unfinished...
Now with SH Commander and GWX its the best ever !!
I have just brought a copy of Aces of the deep and I think I will get out my old Dos PC and give it a go. Cant think why ive never played it before?
In early 2005 I bought a new computer ONLY with the purpose of SH3 in my mind! :D
And this was the date when I finally switch from Aces of the Deep to Silent Hunter III
Being a big fan of air and naval simulations, I bought SH3 as it came out, obviously.

Didn't have a computer until 05. My son gave it to me for a birthday gift. He said since you were on a Diesel Boat thought you might like it. It was totally awesome. When you have actually lived on a "Pig Boat", you can relive that feeling through a computer. Brings back the old memories, including the smells..................:up::up:

I purchaed the game around two years ago, when the work computer became strong enough to run it (didn't have a computer at that stage). I bought a computer when I chaged jobs and couldn't run it at work no more.
I have done some upgrades on it so it can play SH4 now...:yep: Don't worry, I'll be back for the update of GWX!
I was very disappointed SH2 and I couldn't decide to buy SH3 for long time.
But when I read a lot of posts at subsim forum I was absolutely sure that this is a game what I need.
I baught SH3 about january 2007.

The day it hit Australia was the day I brought it. I said this a few times and it make me laugh everytime I think about....................I've never completed one career mission. I have only tinkered around modding and just used the missions as a platform to view/study the mod/s.
One day I will get around to it. I look at it htis way since joining Subsim I think I have a fairly good understanding of the tactics/experience to start a career and survive till the end, sounds a bit cocky , I know, but these are some of the thing I have seen/heard/read etc
See/hear aircraft..............dive, don't fight it out on the surface, prepare your U-boat for the inbound enemy that the bad little aircrat is calling onto your position, you have lost the edge.
Stay out of the channel.
Don't stalk harbours (shallow waters)
If you being ping and you have lost the edge and cannot remain in the fight (too many escorts etc) draw a circle 2.5km around your U-boat. Use this as a the circle of death, try and make it out of the circle, silent running, change angles, remain deep if possible.
Always remember you have the noise makers (I wonder how many of you have tried to fight/escape and have never used them.
Study the convoy note all vessels, use hydrophones to check bearing to vessels just to make sure you have noted them all.
CHOOSE YOUR ENGAGEMENT AREA ! not have them choose it for you.
Have a plan prior to leaving, but be flexible the plan may change due to intel.
Make actions on. What I mean by this is;
Action on enemy plane : dive remain submerged for 30mins
Action on contact: dive to scope depth, assess the sisuation and detirmine on courses of action.
Actions on etc
Action on etc.
Understand silent running and what you can and cannot do whilst at that ordered speed.
Theres heap more I have written down but I think I'm qualifed to take one of these Iron beasts out to war :D

I have SH3 for almost a year now. One day, I was looking around online for a sub sim. I read reviews for other sub sims and tried out some demos before I found SH3. So, I found a review for SH3 and the review gave the game pretty good ratings. That and the screenshots just drew me in. So, I bought it, played it, and...well...the game is simply great. The review accurately described how the game is. It is definitely rewarding to see the spectacular results of a successful attack, especially after the effort to track targets and moving into a good attack position. There are simply no words to completely describe the experience.

Since release. But then I played Silent Service on an Atari Computer, the better one with the colour monitor though... :yep:
Together with IL-2 best cost/fun/duration factor.
