Who was it?
I don't race much anymore, and if so, I use GTR-2 and RBR exclusively these days.
But this evening I felt for a little dogfighting in two dimensions,
so I was digging out my copy of Nascar 2003, installed it,
loaded the special car and went for Daytona.
Certainly a sim that stood the test of time.
I can understand that I gave it up for GTR-2,
but it will remain in my collection,
and see an occasional memorial race. :)
Question: who of you guys was it painting this car for me three or four years ago?
I cannot remember your name unfortunately, I apologize for that.
Just curious. It surely is a heavy burden and an inspiration to do my best
when racing with those insignias on the car. :yep: :D
Still a good looking car. We need a subsim.com car for GRT2, too!
Preferrably a BMW M3, or a Porsche

I think it's gotta be a Maserati MC-12!

I really really dont understand the appeal of NASCAR. No offense, but driving in a circle 150 times? :-?

I thought exactly the same like you, until I - don't ask me why - got this sim four years ago. When I said it is dogfighting in two dimension, I did not make a joke. It's extremely difficult, too, due to the surprisingly low grip, the very high speed, and the extreme closeness to other cars. Error margin is very low.
This is a very good race sim, and with extremly well done physics. After the publisher stopped selling it, it was sold at ebay for up to 200 dollars. But meanwhil that has gone done again, of course.
Like it was with American Football. I will never be the great fan of it, but playing an according sim made me curious enough to buy a book and learn about the idea, concept, tactics, team structures, rules. Different to cricket :) , I understand the basics and the idea of A.F. thoroughly, it's just that I can't get fun out of it for longer than 20 minutes. The many interruptions are what kills it for me - not the game itself.
The one American obsession I never got warm with is Baseball. It send me sleeping even if they are doing something they consider to be dramatic.

I was the same with American Football. I thought it was sissy-rugby until I played Madden, then I started watching. Its true, the constant commercial breaks really are a game killer. Especially when you're rooting for your team!

Actually, while I do enjoy Nascar on occasion, the most realistic Sim out there was the last one made by Papyrus- Nascar Racing 4 released in 2001.
Even today, while the graphix get prettier, NOTHING can compare to the realisitic physics applied in this game. I have multiple versions of the EA Nascar games (last one I have I think is 2005 version?) and they did get prettier in some respects, but the graphics also got a bit more "cartoonish". In 2001 - the entire game was just - super smooth. The interface, from racing, garage and even entire race replay was excellent.
Not to mention the EA versions of this game don't let you do any type of save..... I mean cmon - I nearly have ADD - I can't play a game at real time for 3-4 hours in one sitting. Nascar 4 actually allowed you to save in-race - so that you could play a race over a weekend as time and mood hit you.
Talking about the physics - the EA games are actually not accurate - its like your driving with only the back wheels on marbles. They made a good attempt - but its entirely to easy to get loose in that game - whereas a tight (push) condition is never seen.
I know the roof flaps have helped alot in keeping cars from getting airborne - but they really overdid their effectiveness in the EA versions - Nascar and Nascar Thunder both. This was done so that they wouldn't have to deal with airborne physics. Sad, as I admit I enjoyed causing a mess in turn 4 at Talledaga more than once and saving the replay as half the field got caught (using Nascar 4).
Papyrus remains to this day as the ultimate in PC racing realism. They are also the company that brought you Grand Prix Legends - another point that shows how the name has stayed as the pinnavcle of realism. *In EA's defense - they made those games to fit the less serious "simmer" - and they succeeded.*
There was a rumor that the Papyrus racing technology was bought and could reappear - but I haven't heard anything other than one blurb and thats been awhile.. There is always hope.
It has reappeared, as iRacing.

Oh man that looks SOOO sweet - but its online only? That bites - because I don't play any games online. Pity - I was almost drooling.
(Though seriously - they have pro's on there? Who wouldnt want to virtually race their favorite star racer?)
I wouldnt, simply because I hate the "pay-us-money-every-month-you bastard-or-you cant play-the game-concept". They even charge you ... oh I dont know ... 20$+ for every track and new car that appears.
Oh, and modding is a no-no. And there are no leagues, so the social aspect of league racing goes out the window, you race guys who are ranked like you. And 99% of the content is US based.
Meh, maybe I`ll try it some day, but there isnt even a demo, hehe. You have to pay to try.

I too find Nascar boring. I like the endurance aspect of it, but that's it. I just can't stand that one simple track. Now, make it a figure 8 where the tracks meet in the center and that's entertainment!
Quite some time ago I played a simple little game called Destruction Derby on my PSX. It was so damn cool. I'd like to see something like that again. Flatout series was disappointing. I love wrecking me some cars. Destructive races and car combat have been long time favs of mine.
Just felt like mentioning,
I lose interest if there isn't some sort of structured series of events. A 'campaign' if you will. I need something to race for, I can't just race for the sake of racing or to get the best time. It dulls me. I need to be able to unlock something to keep progressing. Then I toss it. OR I need a game that lets HULK SMASH. That's always fun. I hate being 'penalized' and kicked out of multiplayer games for pushing people off tracks and I guess you could just say playing aggressively. I love aggressive racing! I bet if the Romans had cars, they would've had a grand spectacle of a violent sport to go with em. They knew how to have fun. And admit it, when you are just playing your little race and suddenly you see another player driving the wrong way with an intent to kill, that race of yours just got interesting.
I either hate a racing game because it's too fake or hate it because it's too real. GRID and DIRT are the only games that have had a sort of balance for me. Decent physics, a reason to play, and fun. Dirt doesn't work too good with my g25 though, so I don't play it much. Also, I only ever played the GRID demo. LOL holy **** I suck. I gotta get a new racing game, thinking I'll get Grid or uhm Live For Speed. That was pretty great as a racer, but lacked everything else I look for and if I'm not mistaken it was an online game. It stood out to me because it played beautifully on my wheel. My g25 was an expensive gift and just collects dust most of the time. :shifty::nope: I hate it when I receive an expensive gift and make little use of it.
Does anybody know of any agressive or challenging racing games I might like? I would like something destruction derbyish with a cockpit view and decent physics. Maybe even something cheeky like obstacles in the track to try and make you miserable. That would be infinitely fun, but I'm afraid no such game exists. OHSHI I think I remember reading like a year ago about a 'Burnout' title coming to pc. I might enjoy that.
Anyway, I'm rambling, because somebody stole my car. Well it wasn't really my car because I don't drive, but somebody stole the car I liked to dream was mine. hah I loved that game.
ps. Baseball is indeed a bore.

god I hope that made sense. I've been awake for days. I seem to be having sleep issues.
