Hey folks, I was just filling out form DH..something or other for my Student Visa for January. I also researched financial aid for international students, and found nothing. From Britain OR the US. Nothing from the college I'm going to either (which is fair enough, its pretty small)

If you think of all the money the US wastes, and all the money Britain wastes, dont you think it'd be nice to give students a bit of an incentive to come to American schools? They dont even let me work off campus in the first year, so they dont help by giving me money and they dont help by letting me earn it either.

I'm feeling mighty unwanted.

Welcome to the club. For very different reasons in my life, it's the same feeling over here.

But you are free not to go there! ;) It's not that anybody holds a weapon at your head saying you have to go there. So why not leave them alone. That's like I do nowadays. Life is much better that way.

I was fairly lucky with this. My college in Ireland takes in US exchange students, and uses the fees to send Irish students to the US. So I got a year in an American university, for which average students pay $40k, for around nine hundred euros :)
But like you, my visa didn't allow me to work, so that was difficult.
Other European visiting students got financial aid from ther home universities, but not every college does that. Mine certainly doesn't.

Take out an incredibly large student loan and jump country, r change your surname that way they cant get any money back because offically its not you (thats how my mum done it with her £28,000 worth of debt)

Also the student loan you dont have to pay back untill your in a job earning over £15,000 a year.

In Canada, at least at my university, international students pay double tuition and double residence fees. I think part of the point is that they really do want to dissuade you from coming here and prefer to avoid the international red tape by giving precidence to domestic students.

I shudder to think what it must cost to be a typical international student in America. They must be very rich, very stupid, or love giving all their money away to interest payments.

If that actually worked your degree would still be in your old name :p

Yes it would be but when you go to an interview here we have to by law produce any documents affliating to name change. so yes it would be in your old name but you would have a document to prove it is you.

Also you can pay £35 to the examination board to reporoduce your certificate in your new name.

Most of the international students I studied with were in the first category.

So.....steal and decieve? Great advice....anything to get ahead huh?

I had a student loan from years ago for $5000 dollars for going to school about 10 years ago for only 6 months....finally paid it off this year after payments of $125,deferments and the like over the years.Pay your own way...stand up and be honorable.

BTW im not saying go out and do it its just what alot of people in england do these days because they can and have the money to do so.

I have never needed to claim the social security money simply because im too proud to sign on the dole, id rather work cash in hand and get put in court than make a claim and if they do say anything then my argument is im just trying to survive like everyone else.

I'm happy to report that I'm 3/4 of the way finished entirely on my own coin without a cent from my folks

Alas, my parents are working class and they're paying for my tuition, but lets be honest now. British universities give you all these loans but you're still heaped with debt once you're done. I, on the other hand, have opted for a one off payment, complete with loving girlfriend who's father happens to be Dean of the Faculty ;)

Yea he could. :p

Getting back on topic kind of, here in Switzerland foreign students are allowed to work and support themselves, as I did with my DEA (like an MA) here. It can be a great experience going overseas as well as studying with people from different places. I won't say it always makes one more open or tolerant, it can in fact confirm certain prejudices ;), but my own experience back in Canada as well as here was positive. BTW there certainly are exchange programmes between Universities you might want to check out KP, you could start in the UK then transfer over ... anyway just putting forth some possibilities.

And here's what you guys can study here in Blighty.

Foreign students in Britain to be schooled in queuing (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/afp/20070924/tod-britain-queuing-offbeat-6058bda_1.html)

I think that was kind of mean of me, lots of international students in America that I know of are also very bright - especially you! There was a kid I went to high school with here in Canada who was awarded a complete scholarship to study at Harvard, so there are plenty of reasons to wind up there.

For the record the class system is rubbish and snobbery. Kap, just tell these prats if it was not for you who the hell is going to clear the rubbish.

Ignore the jerks who treat you that way. Someone has to do it and you get to know the city very well. Anyway I don't work in suit and tie (well usually not) but then I work on my organisations' website so I don't need to be seen by anyone really. I don't wear jeans either though. :hmm:

Hell, you'd be best off shipping out here to do a degree. Foreign student? Here you go, take the front seat, and kick that poor aussie kid out the door as you pass him. Whats that? No english skills? Majority of your class speaks cantonese? No worries, we'll do tutorials in cantonese instead! bugger the white boys!

True story....

Anyways, the fact your missus' old man is a dean helps mightily lots. I can understand the reluctance of the powers that be to make it attractive for foreign students. They wanna keep it inhouse.... go for dual citizenship!!!!!
